There is a German in our basement with a blowtorch and other phrases

Posted By on January 4, 2021

The house I grew up in was built in the early 1900s. This has its pluses and minuses. Water temperature was one of them. When we would take a shower, we would announce to the household because one flush of a toilet or faucet running would lead to extreme cold or hot water pouring on the person in the shower.  Also water pressure was not the best. My parents had the plumbing redone with copper pipes since the pipes that were there had the equivalent of plaque in the arteries. One of the crew was a German who I believe his name was Hans. My brother Patrick said one day, “In phrases I never thought I would say, there is a German in our basement with a blowtorch.”

When I was the stage manager at Georgia Ensemble Theater, I would take notes from the director and give them to the actors. These were for me so I didn’t write them neatly because I could read them. This lead to an in-joke at the theater. I wrote, “’Sudden Rush’ do the head thing” one of the actors grabbed my notes and started reading them because he could not believe how atrocious my handwriting was so he read it as “Sudder Fusty do me head”. Sudder Fusty because our safe swear around the place.

Around here if you listened to things I say, you might think I was a serial killer.

“Has anyone seen my eyeballs?”

“The bodies stacked up over there.”

“Someone get that arm away from the cat please.”

Then there are things that makes sense within context but sound strange.

“Put down the Dark One’s Dagger. There will be no summoning today.” This was  after Caroline grabbed the recreation my brother Sean did for my 50th birthday of the dagger from Once Upon a time.

“Of course the cat is sleeping in the demon trap.” This is a rug we have is a recreation the demon trap symbols from Supernatural.

“Has anyone seen the eye of Agamotto?”

“Which one?”

“Avengers Infinity War version.”

This is because I have several versions of this Doctor Strange prop.

I do something I call heard around the house on my Facebook page where I post these kind of phrases, sometimes with an explanation and most times without.

I am grateful for all the strange phrases that pass my lips.

Wow! Three days in a row

Posted By on January 3, 2021

This will probably not continue through the year, but it is nice while it lasts.

Last year was my best run of numbers of days in a row. The reason was the lockdown which I hope never happens again.

Today I am finishing up some UFOs (Unfinished Objects) and housework.

I am grateful for getting projects done.

As the days blend together

First day of 2021 was peaceful, which was very nice.

We watched the new episode of Doctor Who. No spoilers. I thought it was a solid episode and they finally found a way of making an old villain new again in a very odd way.

Now we wait for the series to start.

I am happy to see that the Watch starts soon. It is based on Terry Prachett’s Disk -world. I hope it helps introduce others to his work.

Today I am working on several projects half done.  I am finishing a coat and a hat.

Tomorrow I will finish a couple of puppets that need eyeballs and they are done.

Then onto the next two projects.

The only reason I know it is Saturday is because I looked at my iPhone.

I worked Tuesday through Thursday this next week.

That gives me some time to do other things I need/want to get done.

I am grateful for a permanent position at Michaels.

Random Thoughts as 2021 begins

We have a dry erase board in our kitchen. The primary purpose is the grocery list. This past week I left messages for Caroline and Peter on it before I headed into work since they were asleep.

Yesterday I posted, “Let’s resolve to not make any resolutions until 2021 proves it is less of a dumpster fire than 2020.”

And I am going to hold myself to that.

Last night we toasted the end of 2020 with sparkling apple cider. Everyone was awake at midnight which is a first in a while.

Since we went to bed so late, we all got up later than usual for us. Which is fine since we have nowhere to go and nothing to do.

I am betting there are a lot fewer hangovers this morning.

I am proud to say that I am now a permanent part-time employee of Michaels Craft Store.  I really like my job. It makes me use skills that I haven’t been able to exercise in a while. I like my fellow employees and management is the best. I am looking forward to a long time at this job.

I wish all of you reading this a happy and healthy year. May it bring you what you need.

Here’s to a better year than last year.

I am grateful that I have a job that suits me.

Last MMHCI for 2020

One of the gifts I received this Christmas was from my long-time friend Mary Aileen. It a pin of a cartoon dumpster which is on fire and wearing a mask. That, to me, just about sums up 2020.

One can try to find the good within the year and there was some. Overall, however, this is not a year or type of year I ever want to repeat.

I will say that my mental health managed to stay on an even keel for the most part.

I give credit to my family and friends for a lot of it. I had people I could complain to and get things off my chest.

I also give credit to my therapist and medication. I know that medication has kept me even in trying times. There was a screw up and I was without my medication for two weeks. I definitely noticed a difference especially with a lack of consistent sleep.

Getting a job was very helpful for my mental health. It got parts of my brain going that had been a bit dormant. I like the challenges of it and my coworkers. It is a good situation that suits me.

I am frustrated with things I cannot do. But I know that this is only temporary.

I am proud of how I have gotten through this mess with my mental health pretty much intact.

I am grateful for everything that helped me keep an even keel this year.
