That Weird Thing

Posted By on January 11, 2021

Five years ago, David Bowie passed away.

It was a blow to a lot of us especially those of us who found his music a touchstone.

On that day the following was posted on Twitter, “Today, in honour of David Bowie, please take a little time to work on that weird thing you secretly create, whatever it is. He’d want you to.”

I am going to take that to heart and work on some projects I have been putting off or unable to find the time for.

There are people that we never met that have influenced our lives in profound ways.

I have been lucky enough to meet a number of my heroes and tell them how grateful I am for what they do.

There are others that are never going to know what they meant to me.

Caroly Wilcox passed away. It might not be a name that is familiar outside the puppetry circles. She was the head of the Muppet Workshop for many years. She created the YipYips among her long lists of puppets she designed for Henson. She was one of the greats in puppet design and will be missed.

A friend lost her father to COVID. The number of people I know that are gone because of this pandemic is very depressing.

We could have nipped this in the bud, but idiots have to be self-absorbed idiots. I cannot tell you how many people I have seen who wear their mask under their nose. Yes, masks are not the most comfortable thing to wear but if worn correctly, they will help us get passed this pandemic.

If I can off load a truck with my mask properly worn, then others can pull the dámņ thing over their nose.

I have to use more lotion on my skin because the hand sanitizer and soap dries them out.

I am grateful that I have been able to tell people I admire thank you for what they do.

RTBTCKI Afternoon shift

Today I am working 1:30 to 5:30. I have no idea what I will be doing since they have me on the floor. I do know I have one project I need to finish from something I was working on last week.

Yesterday I got half of what I wanted to do done. I will finish things on Monday.

We watched the History of Swear Words on Netflix. It was fascinating as they explored the origin of the words and the influence of culture on the words. They start with the F word and go from there. It is hosted by Nick Cage who has some serious comic chops. They have comedians and language scholars talk about the words.

My brain is a bit fragmented this morning. Focus is a little harder than usual. I am hoping that will improve with coffee in my system.

The cats are sleeping all around the house. Fig is next to Caroline. The other three have found sunbeams to lounge in.

Caroline is drawing and writing a lot these days. Her focus is amazing.

I have somethings to write that are coming due.

Then there are these mice that are running through my brain that I need to bring into this realm. More on that later.

Now to get things moving forward.

I am grateful for sunbeams.

RTBTCKI Blank is My Mind

One of the phrases that became part of our family lexicon was from The Empire Strikes Back which is, “Do or do not. There is no try”.

Well, there is some exceptions as there are in all things.

Today I am in do mode. I have a list that I will execute by day’s end.

I have let parts of the house get away from me since I started working. I am going to take the day to put everything back. There are a number of projects that have left things behind that need to be put away.

Then I want to start on the next unfinished object.

I know my brain is ready to go when I can do Sudoku with ease. Once I can see patterns, then I know I am ready to go.

I am working through going to work and what needs to happen at home.

It is interesting to have to do this balancing act again. Makes me appreciate my free time even more.

I am grateful for organization in all forms.

RTBTCKI Georgia On My Mind

Posted By on January 8, 2021

I grew up in Georgia. Right now, I am very proud of my state. They did the right thing and voted in numbers never seen before for a run-off.

What should have been a day of celebration became a day of horror as the nation watched a vocal minority committed acts or treason and sedition on our nation’s Capital Building egged on by their leader and his toadies.

I moved to Atlanta when I was six when my father accepted a job at Georgia Tech. My mother accepted a job at the nursing school at Emory. They both worked their way to tenured positions and eventually became Professors at their respective colleges.

Coming from Boston to Atlanta was a bit of culture shock for me. I learned about the civil war and Martin Luther King along with the civil rights movement and segregation.

It changed my perceptions of my country and its history.

We were talking yesterday about what happened in the Capital the day before. Caroline said that this would be in the history books by the time her children were in high school. I pointed out that she will be asked by her children where she was when this event occurred like how I told her about 9-11 or when man walked on the moon.

I met Stacy Abrams very briefly at DragonCon. I hadn’t a clue who she was until a staff member informed me. She is the powerhouse behind the wins in Georgia. I applaud her actions and her ability to motivate marginalize people to vote. Ever vote did count.

We have to be more vigilant about protecting our democracy than ever. It is at a tipping point.

I do have hope for our future. We just had to get there.

(For the. VI: This is a sunrise with the. yellow. of the sun reflecting red. on the clouds.

I am grateful for the results in Georgia.

Crafty Tuesday: Yoichi from Seraph of the End

Caroline has been participating in a number of on-line conventions mostly Anime based. On a number of panels, she has been dressing up as one of the characters from the Anime.

She has been either making or thrifting most of her costume pieces and re-styling wigs for the various characters.

She came to me with this photo and asked, “How complicated is the jacket?”

(For the VI:  This is a young man in a military uniform. The coat is blue with gold buttons and green accents.)

“How long do you have?” I asked.

“About a week.”

“Let me do it”

I sat down and did a breakdown of the coat.  I had a pattern for a civil war coat that I could start with, but I had to draft half the coat.

This is how it turned out. I am going to make the belt and the pants down the road.

(For the VI: This is Caroline dressed up as Yoichi. She is wearing a brown wig she styled, the military jacket I made, and white gloves.)

I am very happy how it turned out.

I am grateful for all the patterning skills I have learned over the years.
