For Spring Hath Sprung

How pierceful grows the hazy yon!
How myrtle petaled thou!
For spring hath sprung the Cyclotron,
How high browse thou, brown cow?

Lyrics by Walt Kelly and copyright the Kelly Estate

That is what comes to mind when I hear that it is the first day of spring and that song was in my head most of yesterday. The actual title of the piece is “The Hazy Yon”. Walt Kelly was the creator and mastermind behind the comic strip Pogo, which I read as a child not understanding all of it. As an adult, I have a better idea of what he was talking about however I do occasionally have to look up a reference. There are a lot of current comic strip artists who list Walt Kelly as a major influence on them and their work.

I have a number of flowers coming up right now. The last cold snap doesn’t seem to have deterred them from continuing to grow. We might have flowers by Easter which seems early this year. Easter that is not the flowers.

Today is a rehab day which takes up about half the day. I am thinking laundry for the second half along with some doll making or starting to make the doll. Caroline has Girl Scouts this evening and there is the science fair as well. Busy day for her and me. And pretty full day for Peter as well.

Need to get some other stuff off my plate as well. Off to make the day a productive one.

I am grateful to the works of Walt Kelly which has given me many hours of entertainment.

Crafty Tuesday Kicking One’s Creative Muse Awake

Yes, I know that sounds severe but that is what I think I need to do.

I have two projects on the drawing board as it were, but they need to come off the boards and into reality.

We are at the possibility of getting me some time to do these projects if I use my free time wisely.

Caroline’s Science Fair project was turned in today. We believe that if we had more time, we could have taught Fig how to jump rope. We did learn that you can clicker train a cat. We also learned that Fig’s favorite treat is Tuna and she is a pretty clever cat.

I am making a puppet for a project.

I am thinking of making a Fallen Angel puppet.

Also I might be recreating the Lord of Time at the puppet slam at the Phoenix. Which means I have to remake a Doctor or two so I have the complete set.

And a doll for a group project. Tik Tok from OZ. I have number of the pieces but I have a week to put it together.

So I have a few things that have been rolling around in my head. Now I need to get off my duff and make them.

Today is mental health day I think after I take care of a few things.

I am grateful for science projects that worked out better than I thought they would.

Went to see Nunsense

Which I hadn’t seen in years. It was interesting to see what Peter got and what Caroline got that Peter didn’t and what I got that Caroline or Peter didn’t. The risqué humor went right over Caroline’s head and, probably because it is a Catholic university, was limited. There was a decent Pope Benedict joke.

Ariel did a good job with what she was given. She figured out how to cross herself with an ironing board, which is not easy. And she looked like a nun to the point that when she would walk to the bathroom people would nodded and say “sister” or cross themselves. She also learned how much the outfit can be constricting to dance in and keeping one’s hair is place is a real chore.

Caroline enjoyed the show and seeing her big sister who she will be seeing next week as well for Passover and Easter, which are pretty much on top of each other this year.

Once Upon a Time was interesting. I will allow for spoilers in the comments but I have to say that the writers came up with a couple of interesting ways that the series can go now. And yes I think we figured out who the mysterious driver who crashed into Hook before the last reveal but they weren’t being subtle about it either. Peter has a good guess as to who Bae is. I have a slightly different theory. Both are based on the titles of the last two episodes.

No heat in the house or hot water. Need to figure out if it is oil or furnace. Going to wait until 9 and call up our oil company to see what needs to be done. And pay what we need to keep our house and showers warm.

We have another big “?” in Peter’s recovery. There was some medication trading around and we can’t tell if a new symptom is from the new medication or something else entirely. Needless to say once the doctor’s offices are open we will be calling, because this can’t continue and if this is an adverse reaction, it need to stop before damage is done. I have a suspicion that it is something else entirely and I am hoping I am totally wrong. So think good thoughts for Peter that this is some simple and not yet another complication to his recovery.

I am grateful for things that go our way.

St. Patrick’s Day 2013

Today we are going to Connecticut to see Ariel in Nunsense. She can strike “wearing a nun’s habit in a musical” off her bucket list.

St. Patrick’s Day has always been a mixed bag for me. I have seen the St. Paddy’s Day Parade in New York City. In fact I have had to find ways around it several years running to get from one place to another in the city. I have also had to get round the drunken revelers “celebrating” St. Paddy’s Day all over New York City most of them didn’t look very Irish to me. And I never did get the green beer idea. Seems a perfectly good waste of beer to me.

What St. Patrick’s Day is to me is my brother’s named Saints Feast Day. Pure and Simple.

Tomorrow I will go by my favorite Irish pub to see if they have any of their soda bread left and have my plate of corn beef and cabbage for the year. They make their own soda bread and it is really good.

Fig is working on her tricks. We have sit, lie down, and up. High five hasn’t worked so well nor has jump rope but we are working on it again today. We have to finish typing up her data and conclusion to the experiment which I have a feeling is going to be that given the time we had, you can’t teach a cat to jump rope but you can teach a cat tricks.

Peter is sleeping in from going into the city to the Coheed & Cambria concert. He had fun and enjoyed spending some time with the gang.

I am grateful for things that make Peter’s life better.

There are Times

When I can’t really talk about what I want to talk about.

I learned at an early age of the Internet that what one says on the Internet doesn’t go away as much as one thinks it might.

Then I got involved with Peter which changed the parameters again. He was in the middle of a divorce and so I was careful about what I said out on the World Wide Web. I didn’t want to cause him any grief or trouble that could be traced back to something I casually said.

The job at Del Rey added another layer of thinking of “Do I say this?” Because there were times that I really wanted to says some things that might be misconstrued. Adding the Star Wars lock on what I can say and all the NDAs (None Disclosure Agreements) I have signed over the years or Peter has signed that I am a part of, there became a lot I can’t talk about or when I can, I forget that I can now talk about it.

Now I am married to Peter and have a child of my own which again changed the parameters of what I say and don’t say.

I can feel safe that what I have said over the years if someone went back and looked at it, I would get a job or whatever. Caroline can read it safely.

I can say that I have always been honest out here on the Internet. If I typed it, I believe it when I typed it. If I found out I was wrong, I admitted it. I have held my tongue as others have libeled my husband and my friends. I don’t break confidences. As much as I might want to say something or correct something, I don’t. I learned that it doesn’t really help and I do know what is the reality of the situation(s).

So I continue to blog about my life and things I find interesting. And I hope others enjoy reading it.

There are just times that I wish I could say some things but I know better so I don’t.

I am grateful for the things I can talk about safely.
