No Strings Attached

There are times that I don’t feel very creative. I just don’t want to do any of the creative things that I enjoy doing. I’d rather go see or read other people’s endeavors.

I call this recharging the batteries. It happens a lot after I finish a large project and need a pause before starting the next one. It also happens when I write. I can’t just go from one project to the next without giving my brain sometime to reset.

Now if push comes to shove, I can pull it from somewhere and get moving on the next thing. However I like having the time to get myself back into a mind frame of whatever I am doing next.

Next it to finish up the puppets I have on the table and build fish for Caroline’s school play. In writing I have a Captain that I need to move along and an idea for a short story for an anthology I am going to be in.

My pause was Farpoint and a trip to see my mother-in-law. Today we are driving home and unpacking the car. Tomorrow I put everything away and get the laundry started along with some cat stuff done. Then it’s back to the puppets.

I do have, thanks to my friend Andrew, my DragonCon puppetry sketch or rather the beginnings of probably one of my more twisted sketches. I have one puppeteer in my back pocket and I will be soliciting a few more to make this work. This is a good thing since it is February and the convention is in September.

I did add something to my list for Shoreleave which, I hope, will go over well. Then I might be doing something for SDCC as well in the puppet making but I will have to see how time is.

But first I have a Captain, a literary character, a Sea King, and a Doctor to finish.

I am grateful for the pauses and then getting back into the thick of it.

Yes, today you can buy massive quantities of chocolates at bargain prices. Sure the quality can be iffy but it’s chocolate!

It is also President’s Day where we celebrate that a number of Presidents were born this month and that you can get a cheap mattress along with reasonably priced linens. Not a discount car holiday really.

We drove from Baltimore to Hartford to visit with my in-laws. We took a bit of a detour to get here but considering the paths to here that were traffic nightmares, we did pretty well getting here in a timely fashion.

Tomorrow is a bit up in the air as to what we are going to do but that will be determined by a number of things including the weather.

The weather has not been kind to us as we have been trying to visit for pretty much the past month. Every time we had it set up, the weather tossed a new storm at us. Since Caroline has this week off from school, we have some leeway for getting back. This is a good thing because there is snow and ice predicted for this evening and then we get into the 50s and have rain.

At least I feel awake this morning. Going outside was an adventure in cold. We saw a car that was idling and where the exhaust was coming out from the tail pipe there was a ring of ice on the ground around the exhaust discharge. I think this is one of those days that you throw a cup of water and you get snowflakes easily or ice balls.

So if you are in the deep freeze, be safe. If you are somewhere warm, enjoy it for all of us human popsicles.

I am grateful for detours that work.

Saturday was a fun day. I did one panel being the only girl on the Doctor Who panel. I saw some great shows and heard some interesting talks. Got to speak to some friends and catch up on news and the like. And I got my inspiration for the Dragon Con Puppet Slam thanks to my friend Andrew. It’s twisted just enough to make me smile an evil smile. Now I have to sort of the puppets and build them. Then write the sketch and record it. Considering this is February and these ideas usually strike in July, I am ahead of the game this year.

I also got a chance to catch up with Marc Okrand and his adventures. The theater he works with did Midsummer Nights dream with the fairies done puppets based on Indonesian Shadow Puppetry. Wish I could have seen it, it sounded amazing. He is doing a bunch of conventions because of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. We talked puppets, languages, and travel.

I saw the Masquerade and my friends won many prizes so I am happy. I think we are at that point when the new blood comes in and blows everyone away. As always the kids were cute, some of the sketches were too long, we laughed and said “what the?” after some of them. Well done all.

Today Peter has some panels and we get ready to go home.

We have come to the conclusion that there is no good way off the Island. So you sort through the least painful and pray that there is not an accident along your route or that the accident is cleared by the time you get in the area. Construction is a given now. Three lanes to two or one on the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway) means that you add an hour to your travel time. Also driver politeness has totally vanished. Yes, I know the jokes about various states drivers and how bad they are but do we need to make it a reality? That reality was our reality yesterday. Which added some time onto the trip. Not as bad as some years but it still was a slog.

Once here, things have been lovely. It is nice to see old friends and catch up on various pieces of their lives that haven’t been as evident on their social media.

I signed more copies of a book than I have ever signed before and continue to do so today. Side of Good/Side of Evil anthology even has a nice line in the front for me to sign on. So that was a nice ego boost. I have agreed to write another story for another anthology. Have my topic and half the story worked out. Then I have to get back to Nemo and finish that up. Hey look, I’m a professional writer. I guess I can cross that one off my bucket list.

Today I have a panel about Doctor Who. Peter has several panels. We have several panels we want to go to. Overall a busy day ahead.

So those of you caught in this artic blast, stay warm. This is dangerous cold as in your exposed skin freezes in a very short time. Personally I am staying in the hotel until I have to leave it.

I am grateful that people are enjoying the Hand Job.

I might have time to write something later here but if not to try to keep the streak going, I am posting this.

I have a lot to do and not a ton of time to do it in. The clock, as they say, is ticking.

Got most of what I needed to do done yesterday but there were lines everywhere to do anything.

So there may be more to this post or you may be looking at the whole thing.

Still have to pack the books to sell and the puppets.

Packity, Packity, Pack…..

I am grateful for things that make this go quicker.
