Today is my make sure the house is in order and pack day for Farpoint. The house is in pretty good condition so that’s a plus. But there is laundry to be done and puppets to be found and I need to make sure I have all my stands for the puppets.
I have gotten getting ready for a convention down to a couple of systems depending on how we are getting to the convention and how many of us are going. Also which convention it is plays a role.
Farpoint is one of our regular conventions. We know the hotel, the con committee, and our food choices in the area. We have a basic knowledge of when some activities that we participate in are going to happen. I have an idea who is going to be there and if I owe anyone anything.
Caroline has been attending Farpoint since she was about 3 months old. The first one she attended was when we got snowed in at the hotel. Next year will be the 15th anniversary of that specific event. She has a group of friends she hangs with and activities that she likes to do. It’s one of those conventions that I can hand her a room keycard and a meal schedule and we are good to go. Everyone knows who she is and she knows that she has to be on her best behavior or it will get back to me.
Packing for this one is simpler than packing for DragonCon to which I measure all other conventions in terms of complexity and just trying to make space.
So off I go to deal with getting ready for the convention. It will be interesting if I can keep the web log going once a day since this is the first convention since the new year.
I am grateful for things that allow me to pack easily.

After getting it in the teeth during the past two snowstorms, this one gave us a miss. So rather than have to dig out from 3 to 5 inches of snow, I have to dust off the car and that’s it. No need to salt anything or shovel anything and it feels good.
All this is even better considering the swan dive I took yesterday into the snow. I tore holes in both knees of my sweat pants, which stinks because those sweats were practically new. Hit my left hand on the palm and wrist that hurt like stink as my hand is still recovering from the spill I took in Philly. Cut up both knees along with various lovely bruises and I turned my left ankle. This morning the knees are protesting and the wrist feels tender. Managed to keep my head out of it.
So now I have to get ready for Farpoint and beyond. I think today I am going to deal with starting to sort what we are taking with us. Might have to make Caroline a light up hat. I do know I want to put the Holmes/Watson sets in the art show so I should make sure they are OK and I have the stands for them. No Phluzzies this year. Might pull out one or two other puppets to display.
I have the books we are taking up just have to get them organized.
Clothing is pretty much done. Just one load to get some things that we need clean.
Then, barring weather, we will leave on Friday and get down there in a reasonable amount of time.
But first a quick pick up of the house and making sure the cats have food and the like.
I am grateful that I am not out there shoveling snow today.

Ronnie Burkett is an amazing puppeteer. His shows are breathtaking to watch. He also is a fount of knowledge about marionettes and the history of puppetry. On his Facebook page he has a request I seem to have a lot of friends on here who are puppeteers, puppet enthusiasts, puppetry hobbyists or puppet smartypants-know-it-all-academics. So how about this: today, right now, Tuesday, you just all post a picture of something puppet related you are proud of, or a puppet that you find so gøbšmáçkìņglÿfûçkìņg beautiful it makes your teeth hurt. And then on Wednesday we can all go back to inanity and sharing of angry political posts not of your own design, or GIFs of poop coming out of Trump’s mouth. But let’s make Tuesday a nice day of puppets. Come on. It’s not that hard. copyright Ronnie Burkett 2016.

I am grateful that I have made so many puppets and amused so many people.

It is also Jules Verne’s Birthday so Happy Birthday to the author of the future.
Yesterday we had some friends over for the Super Bowl and it was fun. The game was interesting.
The commercials were OK. Standouts for me were Hulk/Ant Man and Coke, Helen Mirren and not driving drunk, and the Snickers spot with William Dafoe. The commercial that scared me the most was the puppy/baby/monkey Mountain Dew. What the heck was that and why was it on my TV?
The game itself was a good football game. It was not a run away nor was it a nail biter. Each team proved why they were there. But the Bronco’s defense rattled Cam Newton and kept him rattled. I think that is the most hits he took in a game this year. Also the stripping of the ball was a big factor. Not that Payton didn’t turn it over a couple of times but the Panthers couldn’t capitalize on it.
Since it is the Chinese New Year, I am going to take that as a big shiny reset on the year. Could we have a little less death this month?
Today it is snowing and Caroline is home due to school being cancelled. She could get to school, the concern was getting the children back safely to their homes. Considering what it is looking like outside, I would have to agree. Right now we can get around but as it continues to snow, it becomes more difficult. I expect by this evening things are going to be worse as the water on the road freezes.
So onto the day.
I am grateful for a fun time with friends.

When did Buffalo Wings become the staple food of the Super Bowl? Did I miss a memo?
And yes I did hear about the conspiracy to sell chicken wings because they were just scraps until this phenomenon.
I have had Buffalo Wings in Buffalo at several establishments that claim to have done it first. Some were good and some were OK.
For me the wing has to be well done to be enjoyable. Half cooked wings cause my gag reflex to come up.
Also this is Super Bowl L even though they have taken to calling it Super Bowl 50 and I can see why. Go ahead say Super Bowl L aloud and you will see why marketing is avoiding it. And I bet it is what a lot of people in the restaurant business are calling today. I know one place that has specific pick up times for your wings and the like as they do a lot business today.
I think I will be happy for either team winning. I would like to see Payton get a ring so Eli stops making a show of his two at family dinners. I would like to see Cam get a ring because he has managed to get his act together and is a really good quarterback. Yes he is brash and his team’s end zone celebrations are over the top but you can tell it is in a sense of fun and this team is having fun this year.
So we get ready for the big game this year. We watch the commercials and the next day the commercials deemed a success will mean revenue for the agency that created them. That we are having teasers for ads just blows my mind. I have noticed that this year we are not seeing a lot of the commercials before hand like we have in the past couple of years.
I am grateful that the Super Bowl Hype is soon over and we get down to the game.
