Place Saver or Entry only time will tell

Posted By on February 21, 2016

Not sure which yet.

Sunday morning is starting slow which is fine by me. No need to just jump into the day more slide into it.

Not a good night’s sleep so my brain is a little more all over the place and trying to pin down a topic for this is not going well.

So brain not firing on all cylinders.

Might be late thus the place saver designation

On the plus side the weather outside is very nice and the cats are being cute in their cat pile of fur.

I know I am off because I can’t solve the Sudoku puzzle. I find that when I can get my math brain working, the rest follows.

I am grateful for when my brain finally wakes up.

RTBTCKI Saturday I think….

Looks at the calendar Yep Saturday.

This time last week I was at Farpoint getting ready for the day. This week I am at home planning not be go anywhere except maybe the fabric store and to get some milk.

This week has been a string of what day is it? Between the travel and Caroline being home, my internal clock is out of whack.

I did get everything pretty much put away from our trip and the house is back in some sort of order.

So that means back to the puppets after Caroline and I take care of some stuff in her room.

And laundry we have lots of laundry to do.

But the temperature is suppose to be into the 50s which is perfect for picking up the branches that are all over the lawn. So there may be some outside work as well.

My head is full of random thoughts a lot of them just need to go away.

Much later and after Coffee

Well got some stuff done and more to do.

Brain is still all over the place. Going to try to quiet it now.

I am grateful to things that sort themselves out to our advantage.

Visual Person

I have discovered over the years that I work best to learn something when I have a visual to go with it. Not a video but photos or drawings showing the process. Video just drives me nuts. I can read through a set of directions and sort things out but give me diagrams and the like I can work my way through it.

I have also found that when I am looking for details in a costume for a puppet, I do better with a physical photo rather than an electronic photo. I can see details that I miss if all I am doing is looking at a photo online. Now if it is a clear photo, I can print it out and get my information from that but online for some reason I miss things that I pick up from the photo.

Have no idea why, but that’s the way my brain works.

When I drive places more than once, eventually I find myself using visual reference to remind me when to turn and the like. I once got lost and managed to work my way out of it because I saw a building that I had used to get somewhere else and found my way there to work my way to where I was going. This was in the time before the GPS. I still find myself picking up visual clues as to where I am.

I find things visually. Someone puts something down and can’t remember where but I have seen it, I can find it. The only object that seems to elude this is my glasses that seem to have the power of invisibility at times. I also have our bookshelves pretty much down as well.

My mind works in mysterious ways but it works for me.

I think part of it or rather maybe because of it, I read the way I do. I am terribly dyslexic but I am a very faster reader. My spelling is atrocious. I learning in college that the way I read is has been liken to hieroglyphics in that a set of letters stands for a word/concept and the order is not as important. Also working out right from left depending on the day can be a real chore and yes I know all the tricks but that doesn’t really help when the brain has decided that the concept of left and right doesn’t exist.

I can’t draw or rather I can’t draw well. I just can’t see it. The closest I ever got to working it out was thanks to Bill Sienkiewicz explaining negative space to me. I could almost see it. Apparently my brain just doesn’t want to do that. I have gotten better over the years in terms of sketching things out but that’s about as far as I get. One of the reasons I did the Halloween drawing challenge this year was to give others encouragement to participate because they could look at my stuff and know they could do better.

I know what my brain can and cannot do. I know how I learn best by this point in my life. So I set things up the way I want so I can work.

I am grateful that my brain does hold a lot of information.

Language!

The other day I asked Caroline how she felt about something and she responded with “meh”. I informed her that she owed Matt Groening a nickel since his show the Simpsons’ created that word. Bart said it first in the episode Hungry Hungry Homer (Season 12 Episode 15). Since then it has become the go to work for indifference.

Language is not set in stone unless you live in France and speak French which has a dictionary that tell you what words are acceptable and what words aren’t.

LOL is another thing that has become a word. Mostly it is used sarcastically by people who aren’t laughing at all. LOL means laugh out loud and if you aren’t on a keyboard, then you should do the act rather than say the words.

Adulting as in acting like an adult is one that has come into common usaged as in “I have been busy adulting today. I got my bills paid and my laundry done.” I thought this was the sort of behavior that was expected of people over a certain age.

Here’s a new one eddiction. As in addicted to social media and one’s electronic tether over face to face social intereaction.

I do occasionally have to ask Caroline what is meant by certain words I hear her use. But the trade off is that she does ask me about words I use or that she reads that she doesn’t understand.

Meme is another one that came out of nowhere and has solidly found its way into conversation. But what meme means seems to vary from person to person. According to the dictionary a meme is “an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by non-genetic means, especially imitation.”

We adjust language to fit our situation. Some of it stays within the lexicon and other words fall by the wayside.

We are dealing with a living language and Caroline will probably be asking her kids what they meant by new words and acronyms.

I am grateful for language that keeps me on my toes.

And Home Again

Posted By on February 17, 2016

We had a nice visit with my in-laws including my brother Wally who was up for a visit. Some things were sorted out and other things were worked out so good visit all the way around.

Getting up there was a bit of an adventure. Monday into Tuesday getting anywhere was an adventure. We carefully pick our way back to our lodgings through the snow covered streets with a light sheet of sleet. The next morning there was about an inch and a half of solid ice on all surfaces. Walking outside was an adventure. Extracting the car was an adventure. The advantage was that it got above freezing which allowed for easier ice removal. By the time we got on the road itself, things were pretty much clear. By the time we got into our area, the rain had removed most of the impediments to our travel.

We got home and unpacked the car dodging the rain drops. I got Caroline to her Girl Scout field trip.

Today is cleaning up from the trip. Caroline is home from school this week so we have some activities planned.

I am grateful for roads that allowed us to get home safely.
