Here there be Dragons

Posted By on February 2, 2019

Today we lucked into three tickets to go see the Fandango advanced screening of “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” or HTTYD III.

When the first film came out in 2010 Caroline was 7 going on 8. The perfect age for that film and the target audience.  She fell in love with the characters and the dragons. She saw that film in probably all the film formats there were including IMAX 3-D on a real IMAX screen. Peter said the flying scenes made you feel like you were on the Dragon too.

I made her an Astrid costume which she wore proudly at various conventions and the How to Train Your Dragon the Arena Show. She even took on a Dragon at DragonCon. I am still very proud at how her outfit came out. I am especially proud of the axe and shield which were made from cardboard and paper mache and convention weapons compliant before there were rules to comply to.

Peter read the books to her until she was old enough to read the books on her own. She blew through the series and could tell you just about everything about each dragon. Some kids are Dinosaur obsessed, mine was Dragon obsessed.

In 2012 they released the TV show,  Dragons Riders of Berk, which we all watched and enjoyed. Caroline picked up on hints there for things that would happen in the 2ndfilm.

In 2014 they released “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and Caroline was again enchanted by the whole universe. I remade her Astrid costume to reflect the new one that was in the film which she wore at conventions and the Ren Faire.

On Netflix the next series was entitled Dragons: Race to the edge which started in 2015.

Now it is eight years later and Caroline is going to go see a film that she has been waiting to see for a couple of years now as they kept pushing back the release date.

This is the final chapter in the film saga. Probably the end of the TV series as well. There will be more books but they are way below Caroline’s read level.

So this is the end of an era for her. Concluding a piece of her childhood.

I am interested in how they are going to wrap this up.

I am grateful to the entire team of How to Train Your Dragon for creating a world that has given my daughter so much joy and especially Cressida Cowellfor creating the whole thing.

First Day of the Second Month of 2019

First I want to wish Bill Mumy a very Happy Birthday. You might know Bill from his work as a child actor in various TV shows or from his work on Babylon Five or even the Barnes and Barnes song “Fish Heads”. He has a varied career. He is also a friend of the family. He and Peter created Space Cases together. He is one of the good ones. If you get a chance to meet him, take it.

It is still fricking cold here. Not as bad as my friends in the Midwest, but still this is a little on the absurd side. Our little furnace is trying its hardest to keep us warm but the wind and the cold is not making it easy. I took Caroline to school today because it was too cold for her to stand around on the bus stop.

The Superb Owl is Sunday. Rams vs. Patriots. I have no dog in the hunt except that the game is being played in Atlanta and I am hoping it goes smoothly for all the people there. We have our dinner worked out for that evening. No wings this year because I am not eating fried food.

The cats had another round of kitty politics that seems to have settled out since they are in a pile sleeping together for warmth.

Back to my to do list.

I am grateful for opportunities to show my work to a larger audience.

Last Day of the First Month of 2019

Weren’t we just in 2018? This month flew by.

This time next week I will be packing for Farpoint. I am hoping the weather cooperates.

There is a lot I need to do in the next week and I have a plan how I am going get there.

I think I am going to try to web log at least something every day in February even if it is short to get back in the writing groove.

There is a lot sorting out in my head. I just have to get from point A to point B without being distracted by the shiny thing over at point R.

I am grateful for heat that work.

Monday Morning Musings Back to Normal

Or what passes for Normal here.

Two weeks until Farpoint. Yikes.

Today I am declaring Organizational Monday for me.

I need to just spend the day finding things that need to be found before Farpoint.

I also need to find my kitchen counter, which has vanished under stuff again. I just need to put the stuff away properly.

Same for the sewing table.

Apparently the elves and fairies who magically clean things are on strike.

Also want to get to the cat boxes before the next rain/snow line.

I looked at the long term forecast and we might be getting a repeat of Snow Jam at Farpoint. The weather is looking rather iffy.

The new reduce your footprint/clean your house/Finnish (Dutch?) death rituals craze is really interesting to watch. That people get up in arms because one organizer said you should have only 30 books in you possession. Later it has been found that she might have said that but it was taken out of context and she repeatedly said do what you are comfortable with. Apparently thrift shops are getting a lot of product from this and some have even stopped taking in new material because they have so much.

I knew we were heading for minimalism because it was time for that part of the cycle. Anyone remember the Feng Shui craze American style a number of years ago?

We want to be organized. Some even want to have homes that look like Martha Stewart’s photos of the organized home. The push for the un-cluttering of space in hopes of un-cluttering the mind. It does work to a point.

And it is good to have goals.

Mess can paralyze one’s mind. Too big a mess and it can be hard to figure out how to clean it up. Or even where to start.

And that’s where the tips and tricks of a good organizer can help. Getting the project started. But sticking strictly to the rules when you feel uncomfortable with what you are doing? Not for me.

I am grateful for organized spaces and things/ideas that help with that.

Thoughtful Thursday At least it is above freezing

In fact it is 50 degrees Fahrenheit outside making inside the house much more comfortable. I will take it over 5 degrees Fahrenheit any day.

The sky is overcast and there is rain off and on. Wind is rather severe. I have seen a couple of trash cans rolling in the street.

I have that darn list that needs to be attended to. I think first is going to be my puppet issue to make sure I don’t have to go online for my solution. Might count as my hour of creativity for the day which I have been keeping up with.

Much later in the day.

I feel Ok about today. I got things done. I have more to do this evening.

The weather really stunk today. The wind and rain made travel difficult.

Tomorrow is another list and set of things that must be done.

Life moves forward.

I am grateful that Caroline finally got her toe dealt with.
