  1. Jonathan (the other one) says:

    The IDGANMRA sign reminds me of the tale of the pipes in “Star Trek: TNG”.

    When someone crawls through the Jeffries tubes on the Enterprise, you could see pipes in the corners, labeled with what they carried: O2, CO2, H2O, and so forth. Legend has it (I haven’t been able yet to personally verify this) that a certain number of the pipes were labeled GNDN – which apparently stood for “Goes Nowhere, Does Nothing”…

    I can verify the lowest gauge on the left side of the biobed monitor, having freeze-framed a shot – that very important bar keeps track of “Health Insurance Remaining”. 🙂

  2. Tim Lynch says:

    Okuda and Sternbach got way into the “hidden symbol” stuff, ranging from eighteen gazillion Buckaroo Banzai references to the use of room (?) 4077 the time David Ogden Stiers guest-starred.

    My favorite there, though, is in “First Contact.” As Picard, Worf, and Hawk head out onto the saucer section in their little EVA, at some point a code “AE-35” comes up. In case you’re not a big 2001 geek, the AE-35 unit is the one that allegedly fails on Discovery, leading Frank Poole to the EVA that kills him.

    Gotta love the in-jokes. And as someone who was just in a HS play where I work this fall … gotta love wireless headsets, too. I didn’t use any myself, but it was obvious how much easier they made the job for the crew.

  3. "Dave Bowman"--- yeah, that's it. says:

    Mr. Lynch,

    Thank you!!! The first time I heard of the AE-35 unit was in an episode of X-Men (the Fox version), and I wondered, why the h— does that sound so familiar?

    Well, must dash. HAL, how about an appropriate 2001 gag to bow out on?

    {I’m afraid I can’t do that, Dave.}

    Well, how about a Star Trek reference?

    {Sorry, Dave.}

    ANYTHING clever?

    {How about a Duckman reference?}

    Let ‘er rip.

    “You have the bridge, Number One. I’ll be in the head making a Captain’s Log.”

    And, in all seriousness, I’m rolling before the virtual eggs and tomatoes start flying.
