For the first time in what seems forever and the first time, we think, ever. I am off on an adventure while Peter takes care of Caroline. Ariel’s college chorus is going to be singing at Disney World and I am going to watch them. I am also going to be spending time with some friends of mine whose friendship is old enough to drink and then some. It was just one of those perfect storms of reasons to go
My ability to post may be hampered so don’t take it as a bad sign if I don’t post.
I am looking forward to going to Disney World. I’ll get to see a bunch of my buddies down there who I don’t see that often. But it will be the first time since I started dating Peter that I will be there without him or the girls (well technically Ariel will be there but then she will be off with her little buddies most of the time). Also this time around there is no Adventure’s Club to retreat to for the evening which I still find a crying shame.
We broke the news to Caroline in bits and pieces. She is fine with it since then she gets Daddy all to herself. We told her that Mommy was going to go watch Ariel sing and visit some friends. We haven’t told her where this is going to happen but I think she has a good idea. She says she is going to miss me but it will be OK since she has her Daddy to take care of her. We might have gone as a family but the adventure in the lands down under killed any leeway we have in her school days. I think she had the bigger adventure honestly.
So I am flying out today and will be back Saturday.
I am grateful for this chance to go and take a short vacation.

I took Caroline to the Doctor’s office because of the cough which had gotten absurd. She was tested and came back positive for strep so onto the antibiotics she goes again. It is amazing how much difference two doses made in her. I have Caroline back rather than the pale lethargic girl who was doing her best Camille impression.
Today Peter has gotten Caroline out of the house for a bit so I can clean up uninterrupted except the occasional break for those necessities of life or for a 10 minute sit down computer break like I am doing now. I am sorting out the next part of the cleaning. Caroline has managed to sneak about a third of her stuffed toys down stairs and I have to sort them back up into her room.
I did get her clothes sorted out and removed all the items that no longer fit her. I am going to have to get her some new spring clothes because all her cotton dresses were heading for too short at the end of the summer and now are official too short. Honestly, if it didn’t look too weird, she could use them as shirts now.
I am grateful that she has clothes that fit considering how fast she is growing.

Caroline has a case of strep throat. I took her to the Doctor who had a couple of concerns but Caroline seems to be doing better now so no trip to the emergency room yet (I hope never personally).
Next on my list is to strip the sheets from her bed and wash them. And maybe get a start on her room.
Dropping everything because you have a sick kid is just part of the landscape. It happens, you deal and then go onto the next thing.
I am grateful that she seems to be on the mend.

This week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, car companies are unveiled their “smart dashes” which is their answer to smart phones. It puts an LCD screen within the view of the driver and allows for all kinds of fun things. The car companies say that they are just trying to make it easier and “safer” for the driver to be able to keep up with the world around them. I know that the auto industry is in trouble but I don’t think any of them are really contemplating the lawsuit that is coming down the pike towards them once it is proved that car accidents were caused by these smart dashes.
Distracted Driving is about to surpass Driving Under the Influence as the biggest cause of car accidents. This has been found even more so among teens who insists on texting and driving at the same time. There is even a gadget that someone came up with so you can put your cell phone on your steering wheel making it easier to text as you go and change your music and surf the web WHILE DRIVING A CAR. Let’s go over that again WHILE DRIVING A CAR, which is made of metal and can be a lethal weapon at the drop of a hat or a cell phone or a really hot cup of coffee.
We talk about hands free headsets while driving to make it “safer” but it is not illegal in many states to text and drive which has proven more hazardous than talking and driving. Then they are going to have to legislate that you can’t watch movies or streaming video and drive, which would seen to be logical but when did logic even come into this?
Understand I love my iPhone and don’t remember how I got along before I had it (OK I do but those were the dark times that we do not talk about). I don’t text while driving because my common sense pointed out to me how stupid it would be to do so. No one needs to be that connected into the world. I really don’t care what your job is.
I can remember a time before cell phones and we got along just fine without them or social websites or tweets or whatever the cool kids are doing today to stay in touch. And the kids don’t see the problem with texting while driving or watching a music video while driving or having their honking big headphones over their ears while driving (which is illegal). And they can point to the adults as their teachers in this because they have seen others (like their parents) do the same.
As much as we like to brag how much we can multi-task, we just aren’t that good at it that we should be endangering others because we have to text our facebook status “I’m driving down the highway and the other drivers are driving stupid”. When one is driving then one needs to drive not drive and be entertained by their multi-media word. Radio fine. Plugging in your MP3 player as long as you aren’t shuffling while driving OK. GPS, fine as long as you aren’t fiddling with it while driving. Keeping up with the Jones on various social platforms? Not fine. The auto industry making it easier to crash your car? Not fine. This is going to come back and bite them in a very sensitive place and they will say that they didn’t see it coming. Like the car that is heading right towards you because the teen is sexting to their girlfriend and you are texting to work that you are going to be late.
I am grateful for anyone with the common sense to not engage in dangerous behavior while driving making it safe for my family and me.

Yes, today is the birthday of this world-renowned fictional character.
My love of all things Holmes goes back to High School when I checked out the complete Sherlock Holmes and read it cover to cover. I loved it. I sought out some of the pastiches of Holmes along with his son’s work but none really satisfied me the way that the original did.
I saw tv movies and films about Holmes but none really felt right for me until Mystery presented the Jeremy Brett and I fell in love all over again. I taped those and watched them over and over until the video tape was beyond hope. Peter, knowing how much I loved the series, got it for me for my birthday this year. I re-watched several episodes and it still worked for me.
This year we have the Movie which many people have strong feelings about. Mine are mostly positive. And if it revives Holmes in the mind of the general population, all the better.
I recently pulled out my complete Sherlock Holmes and sat down to reread the Study in Scarlet and it holds up. I have a feeling I will be rereading the whole book over the next couple of months.
I am grateful that Conan Doyle created the Great Detective and I forgive him for killing that character out of frustration.
