I bet the streets of New Orleans are rather quiet right now. It is amazing how fast the city shuts down as the bell strikes midnight signaling the beginning of Lent. New Orleans has done its level best to sell Mardi Gras to the rest of America and the adult beverage companies have helped to do so. The thing is that there are a lot of celebrations in that area which don’t involved alcohol and nudity. But when everyone thinks New Orleans, they tend to think of hedonism which is sad because the city is so much more than that.
Here we got about 2 inches more of snow but it only stuck to where there was snow. Anywhere that was cleared is fine by this point. So it looks pretty but doesn’t interfere with getting around except those few homeowners who have done nothing about their sidewalk. There is a chance for flurries tonight through tomorrow but again not much of it will be sticking.
Peter is in New York for Toy Fair today. He also took care of some stuff for the weekend while he is in. He has already been to the Hasbro showroom. So Caroline and I are going to take care of some stuff around the house and run a couple of errands.
Kind of a quiet day here at Casa David and that’s not a bad thing.
I am grateful that Peter was able to go into the city without too much trouble.

However we aren’t getting that much more snow. It will be a dusting if that. Since we are getting rain and then snow and switching off between the two, there is nothing to shovel. You have to watch for icy patches on the driveway and the sidewalk but overall not going to stop us from doing anything. I swear we are getting more snow that we have had in the past couple of years. Usually we have one snow storm and that’s it. This has been more constant snow. It seems we have been having more mild winters for the past couple of years and this is more normal for this part of the country. I do know that last week was the first time in a long time that the schools cancelled two days in a row.
Here is a picture of what I didn’t get done for Farpoint.
(It is a picture of dolls at the beginning of the process. The heads are complete as are the hands and feet and attached to the armature body. The heads are hard to describe. One is dog-like. One is bird-like. And one is human-like. Very little painting has been done so the clay is a raw pinkish color. You can also see into my box of clay and sculpting tools.)
Wow that was a quick snow shower. It started when I started this entry and stopped about 7 minutes later. I think we are back to rain again.
Anyway, back to the dolls. I plan to post photographs as I get further on them. I have ideas that I might have time to execute rather than rushing to get everything done for a show. That is if anyone is interested in the process of making these critters.
I am grateful for rain which washes away the snow even though it is very cold rain.

Caroline is off from school this week which makes the week kind of different. Next weekend she is going to Siblings Weekend with her sisters. It will be the first time all 4 girls will have been together since Ariel’s Bat Mitzvah.
The rest of Farpoint was short but fun. Caroline got to play with a couple of her con buddies. I got the car pack with Peter. And Peter did a panel along with selling some books. The drive back was pretty uneventful until we got within spitting distance of the city and we had to make a bunch of spilt second decisions. Then I remembered that it was Chinese New Year (Happy Year of the Tiger) so entering the city and getting up to 42nd street became a whole new challenge. We did so and Peter got to his meeting in time.
Bear Auction was splendid. The nice thing about going every year is that you meet people that you see there every year. You catch up on news and the rest while looking at these beautiful bears. I finally had the dime drop last night that a designer I admired is also an Icon in the doll making groups. I had chatted with her every year. Discussing the bear she designed and how she did it. I knew her by her first name and didn’t find out until this year what her last and nickname were. I have admired this woman’s work for years and used things that she wrote about in various doll magazines to improve my work. It was nice to say Thank You to her. I also got to show her a couple of my puppets which I brought to show the head of Broadway Bears to see if I can’t convince him to let me dress a bear or two. He liked them a lot and in about two weeks I plan to rattle his cage again.
Peter also got a pleasant surprise this year. Just about every year round January something strikes Peter and he writes a song based on a Broadway show tune and about supporting Broadway Bears. This year because he took Ariel to see Hair, he had the soundtrack of Hair stuck in his head. And so he wrote a Broadway Bear version of the title song Hair. Last night four cast members from the current Tribe sang his version on stage at BB Kings. Ariel got to meet them after the auction. So both of them were very happy.
Overall we had a good weekend and now are sorting out the rest of the week.
I am grateful that we made it to where we had to be mostly on time.

Saturday evening was spent helping out with the Masquerade. They were short a couple of people who couldn’t make it due to snow conditions so I volunteered to help out. I was a Den Mommy and helped where needed. I hadn’t done that in years and had forgotten how much fun that can be. It is also hard on the feet so I retired early for the evening and watched the Olympics. How wacked what that men’s final in speed skating? The Koreans wiped each other out. The Americans kept it clean and won silver and bronze rather than 4th and 5th place.
Today is rather busy. Peter has a meeting in the city and then we have the Broadway Bear Auction which we hope Ariel will be joining us for. Then back home and Caroline’s winter break.
Farpoint has been a lot of fun. It is nice catching up with people that we see probably two times a year but enjoy spending time with. Caroline put art work in the art show for people to look at and sold a couple of drawings while sitting with her dad. She did sword training 4 times yesterday and had a blast. She played with other children her age. Over all she had a good convention too.

So far it has been a lot of fun.
We got here in pretty good time. Ran into a lot of people I know and met some new people. Caught up on news with various friends. The typical Friday evening at Farpoint.
Caroline and I participated in the children’s programming. We made really cute puppy puppets. Caroline then spent the afternoon in Jedi Training. She got pretty good at the exercises. I got to talk to Lee Arenburg for a bit. We have worked with some actors in common over both of our careers. Anyone who wants a really good guest for a convention, I recommend Lee a lot. He has been out and about among the fans and he is a hoot and a half to listen to. He’s a great story teller.
Peter had his weekend made when Felicia Day came by his table to tell him how much she enjoyed Sir Apropos of Nothing.
Later this evening Caroline and I are going to help with the Masquerade backstage since we don’t have a costume competing.
I am grateful that we have had such fun this weekend so far.
