No Strings Attached

It is already hot and humid today. I have a couple of things that I have to do outside this morning so I can move onto the indoor stuff in the Air Cool as Miss Daisy would say.

If you are living in Atlanta and want some really good entertainment, I can highly recommend Hamlet the Musical which is playing at the Shakespeare Tavern right now. I saw the first production and almost cracked a rib I laughed so hard. It is goofy and it is insane. So if you need to tickle your funny bone, get thee hence.

Peter is in Austin working on a project that he will be talking about at San Diego. I know he will be signing at the Marvel Booth, the BOOM booth with Claudio Sanchez, lead singer for Cohead and Cambria, and a couple of other places as well. I’ll put up his schedule at ComicCon after I get the all clear from him.

Ariel had a blast at the WARP tour. She didn’t sunburn and managed to stay hydrated during the event. Both serious pluses in my book.

Caroline and I did some things that she likes to do. We didn’t get to the last one because it was her bed time but this afternoon we are going to play the Lilo and Stitch video game.

So pancakes for the girls and then I go into the heat and take care of some stuff that can only be done outside.

I am grateful that Peter’s plane ride was uneventful.

Today Peter is leaving for a business trip which includes the San Diego Comic Con. It’s going to be a long week for him but he is ready for the challenge.

Ariel is off to the Van’s WARP tour today. She is meeting up with a couple of her friends and they will spend the day baking in the sun and watching various bands.

Caroline and I will be doing….well something fun. I haven’t figured out what it is yet but I’ll come up with something for her.

The balance of the house always feels off when one of us isn’t here. We adjust as needed but I sleep better next to my husband than in an empty bed.

I do have a couple of projects in mind for the next week. Let’s see how many I can get done.

And that’s exactly what happened this morning. I was slathering Caroline in Suntan lotion before she went off to camp for the day. I rubbed my eyes and now they burn and itch. I really should know better by now. *sigh*

Peter is off to the city for a business meeting that has been pushed back a couple of times due to his back. Today is sort of a trial run for San Diego, which starts in less than a week. He got the last of his sutures out yesterday. Not painful except for the one that was becoming one with his back.

In other news, Peter got this screwy e-mail from Susan Ellison about being stuck in London and having been mugged. I stopped Peter from replying because I knew this was a scam since I have seen almost the exact same letter go out to a doll making group I am part of. Peter got in touch with Susan. She is at home with Harlan and not in London having been mugged. The webmaster traced it to, you guessed it, Nigeria.

Is anyone else watching the New Futurama? I enjoyed last night’s episode. It had that weird mix of odd that I always enjoyed.

Work of Art is losing my interest although I’d love to have their art supplies. This last one just didn’t work as a challenge because (unlike clothes) grouping artists together and then having them build something together is a recipe for disaster. The only thing I agree with is the group the won should have won.

I am grateful for those little pauses in life that give one a moment to breath.

I knew I had seen this before and was glad to find out that I wasn’t crazy, it was a comic strip in the Doctor Who Monthly (issue 368) that Moffat liked and had turned into an episode of Doctor Who.

This is the filler episode for the season really. It doesn’t do much to advance the plot except one or two minor things. It takes place on Earth so there aren’t many exotic effects or sets to be built. It is mostly the Doctor on his own (which is a bit of a switch from episodes like Turn Left and Blink).

It was fun to watch and I thought that James Corden and Daisy Haggard did an excellent job as the young couple that finds the Doctor in the middle of their lives.

The rest of the review is behind the cut. I ask (cause I know it is tempting since we are close to the end) to keep any discussion only to the Lodger.

I am grateful for the rain today even with it screwing up our plans.

Overall, we had a great time. Shoreleave is one of those conventions were the more you go, the more you are part of this large family that goes every year. I have been going to Shoreleave for 13 years now and have enjoyed every year of it. The con committee throws a fine convention both for the guests and the fans. Caroline had a great time in Children’s programming this year. (In fact she is now as old as Ariel was when I went to my first Shoreleave and Ariel loved the Children’s programming then too.)

The Roast went well. The Masquerade was fun for more than one reason. Mystery Trekkie Theater had a good turn out and was a lot of laughs. The Art Show was nice as always. I really liked their set up this year.

Then there were a couple of surreal moments of the weekend with the biggest probably being watching the World Cup final in the bar along with Edward James Olmos and Katie Sackoff. Mr. Olmos had the flag of Spain draped over his broad shoulders. And the outcome made him a very happy man.

On the way home we heard about Harvey Pekar’s passing. Peter and I reminisced about the time at DragonCon we spent a fun evening with Harvey and Joyce discussing all kinds of subjects. It was one of those rambling conversations that went from A to B then skipped to R before going back to C.

Friday
The Roast went well. We buried Michael Jan Friedman’s career and gave it a good send off. Peter had arranged with Harlan to give him a hand with his piece of the roast. It was very funny. I spent the rest of the weekend answering questions thus. Yes, that was really Harlan at the other end of the line. No, they weren’t working off a script, they were improving the whole thing. Yes, they really do work that well together.

I did sign more autographs than I had before at the Meet the Pros party and there was more stuff for me to sign. Next year there will be even more stuff for me to sign. That gives me a kind of warm fuzzy feeling inside. About 11:30 Peter had had it and called it a night which I thought was a really good idea. I went back to the bar and had a very pleasant conversation with a bunch of people I know and don’t get to see very often. I called it quits a 1:00.

Saturday
I was on one panel. I really need to push a little to get on a few more but the one I was on was really neat. It was an overview of this season of Dr. Who. I was moderator so I set up the rule that the last 20 minutes would contain spoilers for those who are watching the series on BBC America. It worked out well. We were able to discuss the season without spoiling it for those who want things to unfold for them and then give our thoughts on how the whole thing wrapped up. My fellow panelists were wonderful and I thank each and every one of you for making it easy to moderate.

After that I was dealing with some technical stuff for both the Masquerade and Mystery Trekkie. I was also on call to be a judge for the costume contest depending on whether Tom needed me or not. The rest of the day was taking care of this, that, and the other.
I took Caroline down for Workmanship Judging only to pull myself out since it turned out I was going to be judging the adults because Catherine Hicks was just going to judge the kids. My other judges were Terri Osborne, Bob Greenberger, and Dominic Keating. We judged pretty quickly and timed out perfectly with the half-time entertainment. I had a lot of fun and told Tom that I am perfectly willing to be the person he grabs at the last second if he needs another judge. Funny thing is that Catherine was having too much fun, she stayed for the adults too.

I went to the dance afterwards and ended up on the sidelines talking to a bunch of friends I don’t see that often (see a pattern forming?). I called it a night about 1 again.

Sunday
Sunday was a little slower. I picked up my art from the art show and thanked the folks for letting me participate. I took Caroline swimming for an hour. We did Mystery Trekkie Theater. We went to dinner with the Greenberger Family and caught up on news and stuff. It was a nice to spend sometime with them. Katie had just come back to the States having being working overseas for 6 months so we hadn’t seen her in a year. We came back to the room and my body had had it and I went to sleep.

Monday
This was a day of packing, load, driving, and off-loading.

Now I have to get everything sorted out and back in place.
