DragonCon 2010 a Few Random Thoughts

Posted By on September 7, 2010

I’ll get into the gritty details over the next couple of days.

We are back home. Caroline made it to school and participated in the first day of school. Apparently due to a typo, a lot of parents thought tomorrow was the first day plus the number of people who have family plans that needed an extra day or so to get back, the numbers were down today.

Drive back was uneventful which is how we like our long drives. Most of the day has been getting everything out of rental car and petting the cats who have forgiven us for abandoning them.

As to DragonCon itself, well to paraphrase the great Douglas Adams, DragonCon is Big…Really Big…you may think it is a long way to the end of the San Diego Convention Center but that’s peanuts compared to DragonCon.

I saw a lot of people that I wanted to see. I also waved to a lot of people. I’m sorry that many saw me running for Pillar to Post so all they got was a wave. This one was a little more than a marathon even though my panel load was less than previous years. I just had a few more things I had to do for various people which took up the rest of my time. Plus there was just the physical aspect of getting from point A to point B as Peter says, “Time is an illusion. Time to get from one panel to another is doubly so.” I got all my walking in this weekend.

I sold three Phluzzies in the Art Show and had a lot interest in the rest of the pieces. I am thinking of putting them up in my Etsy shop as a trial balloon. I have some stuff I want to do to them to make them even better. Plus I have three that need to be clothed.

The Friday Night Workmanship was the hardest contest I have had to judge. More on that tomorrow.

Caroline did well with her dad on the Saturday Night Masquerade dressed as Astrid.

I did get some time to talk to people I rarely get a chance to chat with. More on that tomorrow as well. But I did walk around with a grin on my face and a lot of people trying to work out who I was which more people knew this year because of the nice intro that the Crossed Swords gave me at the Friday Night contest (Thanks).

Again more on all this tomorrow but I wanted to put something up today.

I am grateful that we got home safely.

DragonCon 2010 Day 1

In which we started out at a leisurely pace but ran a marathon at the end of the day.

DragonCon is a convention of many parts. It is also held in 5 hotels now. There is probably something for everyone at just about any point in the day going into the wee hours of the Morning.

So Thursday we dropped Caroline off at my folks and had dinner with them and my sister Sheila. We came back and I went out to see some friends. I ran into them and more people I hadn’t seen in a while including some of our fellow Armageddon Expo buddies.

Friday was, for me, the costuming day. I had a panel on judging costumes and then was the head Judge for the Workmanship Contest. Hardest Contest ever. There wasn’t a single costume that won’t have won something for workmanship at any other convention and many would have had other awards as well. We managed to make our decisions but none of them were easy. My fellow judges were great and very helpful. And I salute all the contestants for showing off the best of the best to us. Y’all were great.

I vapor locked on a panel I was on (Sorry Bev) after that. My brain was kinda wrung out by that point.

Today I have just a couple of things I need to do but most of my time is my own. Caroline is having a great time with her grandparents. Peter is having a great time with the fans. And I am having a lot of fun as well.

I am grateful that we came to this year’s DragonCon

DragonCon 2010 the Prequel

Or rather the day before it starts in full force.

We are here in Atlanta. I am setting the computer up for Peter and then taking Caroline to see my folks.

A lot to do today but I am looking forward to seeing friends new and old.

I am grateful that we arrived safely.

Now I pack for DragonCon 2010

Got all but three dolls done. But the three new ones are great fun. The three that are in states of undress are like other things I have done in the past.

For DragonCon 2010 May I present (from left to right)the Steampunk Badger, The Warrior Kitty, and the Steampunk Fox

They will be on Display at DragonCon along with the Zen Doggie, the Sage, 4 Phluzzies, and 3 dragons.

Now I pack for the Convention. Wish me luck.

I am grateful that I got as far as I did with these.

Happy Belated Birthday to my Brother Sean

Posted By on August 29, 2010

I lost a day in there somewhere. I thought today was his birthday but it was yesterday.

There are four years between Sean and I. We are lucky that all of our brothers and sisters get along. We were each other’s playmates and helpers through out the years.

Somewhere along the way we grew up and now have families of our own. But Sean and I can still get together and just pick up where we left off. (Which I can do with about 4 other people on this planet)

Sean is a skilled blacksmith along with a number of other artisan skills he has learned over the years because he had designs in his head that no one had created so he did. Since then he has built some pretty incredible contraptions that work for what he needs them to do. If the zombie apocalypse or that massive magnetic pulse that wipes out all data and electricity, Sean is the relative I am least worried about.

His lovely wife Rozanna compliments him and contrasts with him as well. Their dating life included the most complex game of tag to be played to date. They are, as they say, well suited for each other. And, like my other brother did, he found someone who fits within the family very well.

I found a photo I took of Sean when he was about 9 or 10. He is wearing a football jersey and is snarling at the camera. The reason he was upset that I took the shot was that he had build himself a working crossbow and didn’t care for our parents to find out that he had done so (I think they already knew). He had done it just because he wanted to see if he could which is how my brother’s mind works. I treasure that photo because it is a snapshot of Sean that reflects him so well (minus the snarl).

So Sean, a belated Happy Birthday. See you at DragonCon in less than a week. I’ll give you your birthday hug then.

I am grateful for my brother Sean in my life.
