No Strings Attached

Which is a nice feeling after a lot of travel. I am not complaining about the travel, it is just nice to not be traveling for a weekend. This summer was a bit busier than usual. Between Peter’s back surgery and all the additional travel he had to do, he wasn’t able to do a lot of the things that we usual do. Again the extra travel was well worth it because it was mostly business related but the rhythm of the house is off when a member is away especially for Caroline. She is very use to both parents always being around.

Fig and Caroline have made up since the scratching incident. Caroline played with Fig most of yesterday afternoon. Fig is getting to be one heck of a jumper. We have to be careful to make sure she doesn’t escape. Her vertical leap is amazing and dangerous. We have had to kitten proof parts of the space she is in that I didn’t think we were going to have to. Caroline is enjoying watching a kitten grow up. Fig loved her little human a lot.

I feel like I am fighting Con Crud. I might be winning the fight right now but Con Crud has a way of showing up when you want it the least. My energy level isn’t the best but I am pushing through it.

Today I am the superhero known as LAUNDRY WONDER WOMAN and also her sidekick the CLEANING WHIRLWIND! See how I conquer the dark corners where the dirt lives! Watch as I defeat the mysterious stains and grime! Cats will scatter! Children will hide their toys!

I am grateful that we have a sense of humor about things.

First off this evening one of Peter’s episodes of Ben 10 is airing on Cartoon Network (7:30 EDST). This one has a character I named in it, Teraspin.

Last night Caroline and Fig had one of altercations that happens with pets especially the young ones. Fig jumped up into Caroline’s lap. Caroline picked Fig up but Fig didn’t feel supported so the claws come out and Caroline has 4 scratches on the fleshly part of her thumb. Caroline screams and the kitten freaks and tries to hide somewhere. I grab kitten and give her a time out in the bathroom. I clean up Caroline’s hand and put Neosporin on it after washing it thoroughly. This morning everything is pretty much back to normal.

Still picking up a few threads from last week including putting things back where they belong. Going to a convention, even locally, consists of a lot of packing and unpacking along with figuring out where the objects we have been given or obtained are going to go. Most of the objects this go round are books which can be easier to deal with than statues and toys.

Halloween is starting to loom on the horizon for me. I go all out for decorating. A number of families get their pictures taken in front of the graveyard I create every year. It is fun to see how the children have grown from year to year. I do enjoy a good Halloween.

The weather is changing. We had one heck of a rain storm last night and a lot of wind today. The temperature has dropped by 10 to 15 degrees from yesterday. No frost yet but doggone close.

Football! I will finally get to watch a weekends worth of football both college and professional. It is interesting to hear the pundits now as appose to the beginning of the season when they told us who would be on top of the heap. Most of their predictions were very off. Kansas City Chiefs? Tampa Bay Bucks? Who would have thought it. Farve and the Vikings not having the season they had last year. The Colts and the Saints are struggling a lot. Falcons are doing OK but not great. Then there is the college upset of last week. What is going to happen this week? Tune in.

Baseball is still being played but MBL is wringing its hands right now praying for the Yankees to play the Phillies. The Yankees at least will play nationally. But the Rangers? The Giants? Very limited fan bases. Although a Giants vs. Yankees would also work since it is both coasts. Worst-case scenario for them is Rangers vs. Phillies.

Has basketball started yet? I know hockey has ( lot of hockey fans in my bowling league).

Caroline is enjoying second grade. It can take her a little but to settle in, but it seems that she has done so and is now thriving. She is reading more and more. Right now she is reading “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and all the Muppet stories that are based on classic literature along with other books some new and some old favorites. It is amazing how much she is able to read. Math is something that she is figuring out. I wish I could give her my math brain so she could see how easy it is. I do what I can when helping her with her homework.

Catching up on Project Runway today. I finally got to see the episode I missed with Mondo and his pattern revelation. Wow, that was very brave of him. Now onto last nights episode. I will say that the expanded format has allowed for the designers to be a little more three-dimensional. I also hope that they keep the design your own fabric challenge.

Onto other things today. So glad we are not going anywhere this weekend other than local if that. I am so ready not to travel.

I am grateful that I added to the Ben 10 universe.

I am an early Mac user. I have had an e-mail account with Apple for a number of years now. I had a bunch of photos up on my space on mac.com. I received a notice that as of November 8th, these web pages will no longer exist. A bunch of my links to photos are about to vanish into the ether.

This makes me a little sad about the impermanence of the Internet. The photos I had up go back to when Caroline was less than two years old. There are photos of costumes I have done and puppets and dolls and friends who are no longer with us. There are the photos of my 2006 Dr. Who puppets and the first batch of Phluzzies. There are puppets and costumes that I don’t have any more. These were my old record which was a snap shot into my life at the time.

I do have a mobile me account with all the bells and whistles that entails but I still love the simplicity of my old site. And it was there for me when I wanted to show someone an example of my past work. I feel like a piece of my internet presence is about to be snuffed out.

I don’t know why Apple is doing this but I have some guesses and in the big picture, it makes business sense. So I pulled everything off this morning to make sure that I had at least a copy of all the things I had up on that site. I double checked to make sure I hadn’t missed anything. I will probably go and visit the site a little more often in the days to come knowing that soon I will get an error message if I want to visit. I can go and put the photos up in my photobucket account or other places on the net but it won’t be the same.

I am grateful that I did have those sites for as long as I did.

Kittens are full of personality and energy. Figaro loves to attack toes with a verve that is just amazing to watch. Her other most beloved toys is the plastic ring from a milk jug. She liked the pink and purple ones but not the green ones. She is growing quickly. She went to the vet yesterday and was cleared for meeting the boys when we decide to introduce her. Fig and Caroline have bonded to each other. When Fig hears Caroline come in the door after the school, she mews until Caroline comes and plays with her.

Things are returning to normal around here. Caroline is back in school. Ariel is back at college. Peter is writing about various things. I am sorting out what I am going to do next. I am thinking I might have another crack at the novel in a month next month. But I think next is getting the yard ready for the Halloween decorations that I like to put up every years. Hard to believe that we are almost half way through the month already.

No, I haven’t been keeping up with sports but now I think I can get back to watching and commenting. I also haven’t seen the new Sarah Jane, but it is on my list.

I have a couple of other things happening in my brain but none are where I want put it out in public.

I am grateful that things are back to normal.

I found out that my friend Chris aka Skates had passed away this past weekend after a long bout with cancer. I knew that she had been fighting it but I didn’t know that it had come back.

Chris and I met at some darn convention. Neither of us could really remember which one. It could have been an Atlanta Fantasy Fair or a Dixie Trek or even a MOC but we did meet. It was one of those cases that was best put by the Great Gonzo in the Muppet Movie, “There’s not a word yet for old friends who just met.” And that’s how it was for Chris and me. We hit it off and became fast convention buddies over a weekend for a friendship that lasted more years than either of us were willing to admit. We found it amusing that people would mistake us for each other so she was my sort of twin but not really.

Our touchstone was DragonCon. We always managed to find the time to catch up on news and life there. There would be hugs and then we would tell each other what had happened since we last met. She did know about Peter and me before I could tell her but that one went around southern fandom pretty fast. I remember introducing her to Caroline as a baby. She held her for a little while and told me how beautiful she was.

It was DragonCon 2009 that I found out what had been happening to her in the previous year. I went to get my badges and I saw Chris with her head wrapped in a scarf and she looked rather frail. My heart fell into my stomach. Our catching up that year consisted of her telling me about her year. But it ended on what seemed a positive note.

I didn’t see her this year but I ran through check-in with Regina and got distracted. I figured I would see her sometime during the weekend, I always did. It wasn’t until yesterday when I heard that she had passed that I realized I hadn’t seen her at DragonCon.

Chris was one of the good ones. She was always willing to help however she could. She always had a nice smile for everyone. She had a wicked wit that could keep up with the O’Sheas (not an easy thing to do). She was my friend and I will miss her.

I am grateful that I knew Chris and that we were friends.
