No Strings Attached

I would like to offer my thanks to all veterans who have sacrificed so much allowing me to live the life I lead. If you love freedom, hug a Vet. I have had lots of friends who have served and some that are still deployed this day. To them and their families, know that I am thinking of you.

I am taking Caroline into the city for an adventure today. It is sort of at the last minute but she has been jonesing to go to the Natural History Museum for a couple of months now. She wants to see the dinos and look at the shapes of the rocks in the gem and mineral section. We will probably lunch at John’s Pizza because she really likes that place. It will be a Mommy and Daughter day in the City.

We are still dealing with Fig and her intestinal track and parasites. Now it looks like it might be a tapeworm which is a whole other medicine. Either way we have a worm sample to show the vet so we will know what is going on.

Peter has about four writing assignments that are due about the same time. We are not going to see much of him before Thanksgiving which is fine. Work in these difficult times is a blessing and we are grateful for each and every one of them. He is really good at getting a bunch of different things done at the same time. His brain is just amazing that way. Caroline understood the phrase “Daddy is on a deadline” before she could talk.

I am grateful for the opportunity to just take Caroline in the city and go see something on whim.

Sort of last minute but one of the parents dropped out so I got the call that I was needed. I had to rearrange one or two things but it’s fine and should be fun.

Yesterday was dealing with the kitten day. I took her to the vet and we had her checked out along with her next distemper vaccine. She takes shots better than being force fed medicine. With any luck (the good kind please) she will be rid of her parasites.

Can’t believe that Thanksgiving is that close. Where is the month going so rapidly? I am going to blink and it is going to be 2011.

Looks like rain and wind again today. At least the field trip is inside.

I am grateful that I can just jump in and help at the school.

Not much done in the craft corner of my world yesterday. I kinda vegged until I had to start running some errands. After that was bowling that went OK but not great. I watched Castle then the Daily Show and Colbert and went to bed.

And kept waking up off and on all night. I am not feeling as sleepy as I thought I was going to be. Caroline got up at 6:30 this morning since it was 7:30 still in her little body clock. Trying to get her to go to bed at 9:00 is a trick in itself usually ending with her in bed because I’m the mommy and I said so.

Football was OK this week. The Jets game was probably the most interesting one I watched. The Giants just tap danced on the Seahawks. The Viking game wasn’t bad and the Steelers vs. Bengals was good and not as lopsided as I thought. College football did not hold my interest this weekend.

Basketball started as well. It is interesting to watch everything shake down after all the speculation off season. The Heat are doing about as well as they did last year. The only difference is that there are butts in the seats.

I still love the Muppets with a fiery passion of 1000 suns. I was happy to see a two page spread in Entertainment Weekly this week of the “table read” of the new Muppet movie. It was nice seeing one of those insane pictures that you can look at for a long time and see new things. The cover is the Harry Potter cover. Speaking of Harry Potter, Caroline is now showing a serious interest in the series.

We have to take Fig back to the vet for another deworming. The sucky thing is that we were integrating her with the boys and it was going pretty well. But now we have to keep her separate and keep an eye on the boys because they wouldn’t react to parasites very well at their age.

So this morning is Kitten care. This afternoon I want to get some other stuff done. I do need to sit down and finish some stuff up. My discworld dolls are going to another discworld convention later next year. I need to fix them up and rebuild Greebo who became a cat toy without my knowing it.

Need to get Caroline moving towards the school bus. She is currently taking over an hour to eat her breakfast which is not great. So I have to get her into gear and off to school.

My brain can go a mile a minute when it is working through a problem or figuring out how to do things. I can be very clever when call upon to be so. However my brain is not a great self starter. It tends to want to work in last ditch almost panic mode. If I have time, my brain is a good one at putting things off until it needs to be done.

Strangely enough that only happens when it is a project for me. If it is anything else for anyone else, my brain goes into overdrive to sort out the problem or do the job that need to be done. It makes me an excellent employee that tends to get about twice a much done in half the time. I have amazed and astounded many of my employers with how fast I pick up a job and figure out the most efficient way to get the job done.

But when it comes for things for me, it tends to slow down to a crawl until we hit the make it or forget it point. It is not that I don’t have a ton of ideas floating around the brainpan. I am never short on ideas. But moving those ideas in the real world can be a challenge for me. And then there are all the things I haven’t finished yet. I have three dolls in need of clothing. I have about 6 items I want to get up on Esty but I need to set up the photographs, which I know how to do thanks to Richard Termine and the crash course he gave me in museum photography at the Center for Puppetry Arts.

There are costumes I want to make. Stories I want to write. That professional shot that I have to get done this week. But there is also things like Caroline’s Birthday in less than a month and Thanksgiving and the rest of the holidays. Taking care of hearth and home is important to me and my family.

I get overwhelmed with all the things that I need to do, should do, and could do. And at that point my brain just freezes on me. It doesn’t want to go forward nor does it want to go back. It just wants to stop for a bit and rest and reset.

So today I am giving my brain a day off. I will do repetitive redundant things. Or maybe I’ll just read today. Or whatever I want to do. Just to give my brain some time to unfreeze and reset.

I am very grateful for my creative brain even when it is driving me crazy.

Yesterday after school we took Caroline to see Megamind. She was of two minds about seeing it because she found out that Tangled was moved back because of when Megamind was being released. But she decided that she did want to see it.

Not quite what the commercials portrayed it and there is one trailer I wish I hadn’t seen because it reveals a major plot point, however I liked it better than the trailers led me to believe. There is quite a beautiful story being told amongst all the lunacy.

The visuals were great. I have a feeling that Minion was already in process before Despicable Me so we have two different uses of the idea of Minion. But I like this Minion a much as the yellow guys if not a little more.

Does it need to be seen in 3-D? I am on the fence on this one. There are some cool sequences but nothing that screamed watch it in 3-D. With the exception of a cool trick with a falling building and one entrance of Megamind towards the end. Also there is a tag in the credits with Minion and laundry but that is the only one, but the backgrounds on the credits were pretty cool too.

Does it need to be seen in a movie theater? Yes, there are things that will only work and be visible on that large a scale. Especially Megamind’s lair and the Metroman memorial.

For parents, there are some scary parts and some people acting badly but good does win. Nothing too horrific. Mostly cartoon violence. One scary bit towards the end with Minion but take your cue off of Megamind. You may have to explain some of the character’s motivation to the younger viewers but 6 and up can probably work it out.

This is the second time this year that the trailers have led me to believe that a movie was one thing but it turned out to be something else but for the better. The other was Despicable Me.

I am grateful that I saw Megamind in 3-D.
