This was one of those “once in a lifetime” chances to see a group of people perform a show that will probably never happen again. We had heard that Neil Patrick Harris was going to be in a concert version of Stephen Soundheim’s “Company.” That sounded interesting. Then we heard that Patti LuPone would be in it which made it more interesting. Then we heard that Stephen Colbert was in it and that made it a must see for us. We were one of the lucky ones who found out about this show very early on so we got tickets. Apparently a couple of hours after we got tickets, it sold out on the first day of sales.
So yesterday we dropped Caroline off with her sister Gwen and she spent a very pleasant day with her older sister and Peter and I went over to Lincoln Center and Avery Fisher Hall to see “Company.” We had lunch at PJ Clarke’s across from Lincoln Center where I had a very fine burger. There was one small accident with a glass breaking. I got hit above the eye with a piece of glass that nicked me but didn’t do damage. Just felt weird. They took some money off the bill because they felt bad about what happened.
We got to our seats and settled in for a fine afternoon’s musical theater.
It really was one of those Once in a Lifetime performances. Neil Patrick Harris was suave as Bobby (the lead). We didn’t know until we opened the program that John Cryer was in the cast too. We did know that Anika Noni Rose (Tiana in Princess and the Frog and recently seen on “the Good Wife”) was part of the cast. But we had so many other nice surprises in the cast. People we had seen in other shows over the years and enjoyed their previous work a lot so we knew we were in for a solid performance.
And they didn’t disappoint us in the least. Stephen had the least theater street cred since everyone seems to not remember he was part of the Second City troupe in Chicago and he did very well. It was very well cast. The songs in Company are pretty typical for Soundheim and can be difficult to sing. Katie Finneran did a really good job with “Getting Married Today,” which is probably his hardest patter song that he ever wrote. Anika Noni Rose gave us a very different way to sing “Another Hundred People” which has become my favorite interpretation of what can be a very angry song, which she made almost a love letter about living in New York. And of course Patti LuPone knocked “The Ladies Who Lunch” out of the park reminding everyone why she is Patti LuPone.
Of course Neil Patrick Harris was brilliant. He even got some magic tricks into “Side by Side by Side”. The guys did great with “Sorry-Grateful”. Again a great cast doing great things backed up by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The set was a series of chairs and couches on wheels that were moved around in a lovely dance of furniture. It was a clever way to make so many different rooms for a concert.
We came out smiling after seeing a good afternoon of theater. Now when we were in PJ Clarke’s, we saw a picture of what looked like to us a very young Fyvush Finkel holding a CBS microphone. No one could tell us if it was what we thought it was. Coming out of the theater Peter and I saw a man who looked exactly like Mr. Finkel. And it was Mr. Finkel. Peter got the answer to his question from the man himself. Yes, that was his picture in PJ Clarke’s. We chatted about the show we just saw and New York theater in general. It was one of those New York moments that just kind of happen here.
I am grateful that we went and saw “Company” in such good company.

We have been having some issues with bulk spamming with the various sites I moderate. Most of it is not getting through but other things are getting stuck in the spam filter until we take the time to get it out and into the mix. So things might slow down a bit until we can get the software to recognize which is which. This seems to happen every couple of months and I don’t think it is just us.
Apparently we have some form of a budget that will be signing into law here in the US. I haven’t read up on it but I have a feeling I am not going to be very happy with the cuts. Now onto the next fight about the next budget.
Today Caroline is going to see her sister Gwen and Peter and I are going to see Company with a rather splendid cast. I’ll talk more about that tomorrow.
Also need to gather things so I can work in the car on some stuff. I hope to be able to get both parts done for Monday.
I am grateful for things that let me work where ever I am.

I lost track of a day some where along the line. Caroline remembered it was Friday because she wore her school spirit shirt and took a toy with her which she is allowed to do on Friday.
Tomorrow we have tickets to see Company with Neil Patrick Harris in the lead. Which would be cool but then we found out that Stephen Colbert was playing Harry so we got tickets. Apparently we got in right before the tidal wave of people who were trying to get tickets to it since all performances were sold out about an hour after we got our tickets. Caroline is going to visit her sister Gwen while we are at the show. She is looking forward to spending time with her big sister. Sunday we are going to go see Ariel in Little Shop of Horrors up at Sacred Heart. Next weekend is Icon which Caroline, Peter and I will be at. So a busy couple of weeks leading to another busy couple of weeks. Next break will be probably May 16th or so.
Today I want to sculpt two figures and get them started. I need to have them done by next Tuesday so I can work on cleaning up the living room. It is do-able but this weekend is pretty much going to be a loss for time except some rare moments.
Onto the day at hand. Hope y’all have a good weekend.
I am grateful for opportunities to see once in a life time shows.

I almost thought that my clock was wrong because it couldn’t be that dark at 7:00 AM but the Cable Box told me otherwise. I heard Caroline’s door close so I knew that she was up and around therefore it was time for me to join her.
I got her breakfast and she is eating it with the kitten trying to get her attention.
The Fig really isn’t a kitten anymore. She is more of a teenager with the ability to get herself into trouble. She is a cat without fear so she keeps trying to get places that she shouldn’t be.
Caroline’s new favorite book series is the Bad Kitty series by Nick Bruel. She has read through all three books twice now while giggling a lot. They are a good combination of visuals and text. I would say that they are on about the 2nd grade level in terms of vocabulary but I think that the ages that would enjoy them is even bigger. Heck, I even enjoy them.
The cats have informed me that their food bowl is empty so I got up and refilled it along with changing the water in the waterbowl.
Oh well the Orioles lost as did the Mets and Braves. It happens. I just hope it happens less than it did last year.
Peter challenged me yesterday. We came up with a crazy idea for a book and now he has challenged me to write it. It is such an insane idea but I will give it a go.
There is a big difference between using photo as reference to draw something (which professional artists do all the time) and tracing when you put tracing paper on top of a photo and copy the photo with some minor changes. There is a minor dust up about the difference between the two on a board I read on rare occasion and that is part of the reason it is rare that I read it. Then I read about someone copying/tracing at a convention recently in someone else journal so that brought it to the front of my brain again.
Peter handed me another challenge to get done before ICon. Let’s see how I do.

According to the weather report, I shouldn’t be seeing sunshine until next week. We are looking at a week of almost solid rain. So I will take a day of sunshine.
Baseball is in full swing. Fans are cheering and complaining at the same time. The Mets did pretty well last night and how about them Orioles? Braves are doing pretty well as well. There is a lot of hope unless you are a BoSox fan and there is a lot of panic.
Caroline and Peter have been reading through Calvin and Hobbs. She is really enjoying it.
Did anyone else see this past weeks “Batman Brave and Bold”? We were amazed and amused by it but then we would expect nothing less from Paul Dini.
I have an idea of what I need to do today and what I want to do today and they don’t mesh very well so I have to find a way to get them to cooperate.
Live Journal is still being fussy. This morning I can’t get to any communities but right now my personal journal seems to be up and running.
Caroline is rereading Bad Kitty to a bunch of her stuffed animals. She find this book hilarious.
I hope everyone in Atlanta and the rest of the South East is OK considering the storms the other day. I know a number of people are without power and phone due to trees falling.
Random journal is random.
Peter had a lot of fun at WonderCon. He talks about it on his web log. He managed to wander around the convention without his long time friends recognizing him for two days. He was dressed as the Green Hornet.
I woke up with kind of a metallic taste in my mouth. It is making my coffee taste funny.
I am grateful for sunbeams for cats to stretch out in.
