No Strings Attached

Yesterday Caroline and I went to meet up with my parents at the Central Park Zoo. The last time they had been there was with me about 40 years ago so it has changed a bit. Many of the animals were hiding including the snow leopards. I don’t blame them. It was kind of hot and humid and if I had a chance to get some cool air, I would have taken it. Caroline didn’t mind because she got to spend sometime with her grandparents showing them the zoo that she loves and her ability to read a map.

After we parted ways, Caroline and I went to run a few errands and then took the train back home. Caroline declared it a very good day in her life.

Today I am getting together with my BFF Mary Aileen and we are going to do some cloth shopping in the fabric district. Then this evening we have tickets to a Mets game. So another busy day.

Thursday is a half day for school so about the time that Caroline goes in, she comes right back out. Friday is the same situation and then she is looking at her summer vacation.

Working on a couple of things. Had to bow out of one obligation due to the dolls being damaged so I can’t just send them. And I feel pretty sad about that but I only have so many hours in a day.

Off to get a couple of things done before the day really starts.

Taking Caroline into the city today to catch up with my parents and explore the Central Park Zoo with them. We think the last time they were there, I was about 8 years old so were talking around 40 years ago. It has changed a bit since then.

There is one part of my neck that I apparently kept sun on longer than the rest of my face because it is very red. My arms got toasted too but, thanks to my WETA hat, my nose is fine. I foresee a lot of sunblock in my future. Caroline looks fine.

Vanillie is doing better. He is adjusting to being pilled twice a day but he doesn’t like it.

Various things have been on my mind. Some good. Some bad. Pretty much life.

I have started a group for Peter on Facebook that Peter is updating. If you search “Peter David” and click the writer one, you’ll find it. Last post was about Bronski’s Dates with Death being out shortly. Please join and invite a friend. I want people to know it is out there.

I have to figure out my schedule for the next couple of weeks. I have some pretty ambitious projects on my plate so I need to get cracking.

Missing watching Dr. Who. I am figuring that will fade in time. The end of Game of Thrones is the ending of the first book so they are doing a book a series which is pretty cool. A number of series are about to start up including Burn Notice and Torchwood.

Applied for another editorial job and didn’t hear anything. Maybe I need to review my resume or something. I have to say that I am feeling a little discouraged.

I am going to have to bow out of a project this week. I just don’t have the time right now and the dolls need serious repair before I could send them out again. Kind of sad.

The Puppets are calling me. I am going to be in puppet build land for a while. Yeah, I know this should be crafty Tuesday but I think it is moving to Thursday this week. I have a project I need some help on and I want to see if the hive mind out here in cyberspace can give me a hand getting the pieces I need.

The Walmart ruling makes sense to me. It is different when you can prove a set of actions rather than trying to lump everything together and throwing a ton of various accusations that just rings up the lawyers hours so that there is nothing left from the settlement. Class Act suits were meant to serve a purpose but it has to be a common purpose. Like if smurfarium used to treat acne turned a set of people blue and the company knew. That’s a class action. The Wal-Mart case read more like a grievance committee meeting. There are individual cases there and I think Wal-Mart is going to pay but maybe some of the money will make it to the people who were wronged.

Going to see the Mets Wednesday with any luck.

Off to get Ariel moving since she is moving to her job in Conn. today.

I am grateful my sunburn isn’t worse.

We have concluded Field Day at Caroline’s school. It went off without any major hitches and only one minor one. The kids had a great time. The parent volunteers went above and beyond considering the number of them were scrambling to fulfill their commitment because it raining on Friday and people had asked off from work. Everyone was given a job and they did that job with great enthusiasm. I have heard the phrase used that “Parents make the school too” but today I saw it in action.

I got a little more sun that I was expecting so I am glowing red over certain parts of my body but especially the left side of my neck but it was worth it. Caroline is happy that her team came in first. She holds her ribbon proudly.

Ariel did the puppet show. That went over well with the kids as well. I am very proud of her.

The next couple of days are going to be rather busy. Friday is the end of the school year and then we are into summer and I am putting peddle to the metal to get everything done for Shoreleave.

I am grateful that all the kids had such a good time at Field Day.

Fathers are special people. When you are a kid, one of the questions that is asked by your peers when you are all getting to know each other is “What does your Father do?” My answer, when I was a kid, was my father is a physicist who specialized in lasers and holography. Which is a mouthful for a six year old.

Fathers can shape the people we are. I know my father is proud of me and that he loves me. I know my husband is very proud of and loves his children with all his heart.

Fathers teach us things. I got my first tool lessons from my dad. He taught me how to whistle but never could teach me the power whistle (it could be heard through out the neighborhood and was our signal to get home.) He taught me chess and bought me my travel board I still have today. He read to me all kinds of books. He shared his interests with me and took an interest in what I was interested in. I watch my husband teach my daughter the correct way to hold a bat or throw a ball. He reads to her and encourages her to read. We have cartoon night on Fridays were, if there is nothing new on, he shares with her TV cartoons that he loved when he was her age. He helps her with her grammar and pronunciation of words she doesn’t know along with their definitions.

I know Caroline is lucky to have her father so much in her life. Because we work out of the house, he can be there when she gets up in the morning and when she goes to bed at night. She didn’t really understand until she went to school how different that was. She does appreciate it.

My father made sure that we were well educated in the arts. We would go to art museums and he would talk to us about the paintings. He showed us Ballet and theater. He watched the Muppet Show with us. The Muppet Show was serious family time in our house with a lot of laughter. My parents took me to the opening of the Center for Puppetry Arts because they knew how important it was and cool it would be to see Jim Henson in person. I got an up close and person view because the crowd pushed Jim into me rather hard and Kermit asked me if I was OK. I answered the puppet.

I love my father very much. And I appreciate now all that he did in his life to make sure mine was a good childhood and a good beginning for the adult I would become.

Thanks Dad.

I am grateful to the fathers in my life who show me by example of why they deserve the title of Best Father Ever.

And honestly it doesn’t try to be more than that. We saw in 2-D because we had been warned that OA is hard to see in 3-D. Kind of the same problem as seeing Thor in 3-D. Ryan Reynolds is a lot of fun as Hal Jordon. Mark Strong, last seen falling off the London Bridge in Sherlock Holmes, is Sinestro who had one heck of a story arc for being a b plot. If you listen carefully you can hear Geoffrey Rush and Michael Clark Duncan coming out of the mouths of some of the other lanterns. Stay through about half of the credits and there is a scene but once that is done, there is nothing really extra except at the end of it all they have a splash page encouraging you to read DC Comics and Green Lantern which I honestly think they should do in just about every comic book film so the audience has some idea that the source material is out there.

We have had a couple of Superhero Films this summer and we have a few more to go. Out of the “blockbuster” films I have seen this summer here is my current order of enjoyment

1. X-men First Class
2. Pirates 4
3. KungFu Panda 2
4.Thor
5. Green Lantern

Now understand I would go back and see each of these films again given the chance. This is just the order in which I liked them and it can flip around a bit.

Not the best morning for me. I woke up about 3 Am in some pain and ended up getting up so as not to disturb Peter. About 6 I went back to bed and got up at 7 but was so bleary eyed that Peter suggested I go back to bed. Went back fell asleep again and woke up at 9. I would not care to repeat that again.

Today we are doing the Cars activity at the Disney Store. Caroline has had so much fun with the previous two. It doesn’t cost a thing to participate and the freebies have been excellent fun.

Peter and Ariel are going to see Glee in concert this evening. Ariel is so happy about that. I think they are going to have a good time.

Caroline and I will probably settle in with a movie or something. I need to work through some pattern ideas in my head out to paper.

I hope that you who read this are having a good weekend. And an early Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.

I am grateful for the sleep I did get.
