RTBTCKI Jacket is eating my brain edition

Posted By on July 28, 2011

35 days to DragonCon. Almost got everything cut out. I stopped last night when I realized that there was a good chance I was going to get it wrong and waste fabric. Today is finish cutting and get that jacket mostly done. Then I need to start on the pants. My goal is by Saturday to have the uniform mostly done.

Weather had been odd. Not impossibly hot but not quite comfortable outside. There is just an oppressive feeling when you walk out the front door.

Mets won again even without Beltran. He will be missed but at least they didn’t go into a slump when he left the clubhouse.

Football is a mess. And the younger players are going to resent the heck out of the current crop of big money makers for screwing it up for them down the road. The owners basically got most of what they wanted. The only thing I see good for the players is healthcare after their playing days are over and they seriously need that.

LJ finally admitted that they were under attack yet again. They are trying to compensate but it seems like the downtime is getting worse. At least they admitted to something that most of us figured out two days ago.

I am on Google+ but I am being very limited in how I am using it now.

In the current issue of Entertainment Weekly in the Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig interview, there is a sidebar for a movie that Peter wrote for Full Moon called Oblivion. The running gag around the house has been “Cowboys vs. Aliens or as we like to call it Oblivion.” It is nice to see it get a mention. It is coming out on DVD with new artwork on the cover.

Off to cut and sew fabric.

I am grateful for neoprene.

RTBTCKI Peter is Back from SDCC 2011 Edition

36 days until DragonCon. I got the muslin for the jacket worked out and tore it back apart so today I can start making the real jacket. Figured out a bunch of stuff but hope I have enough material for a few mistakes. My goal is to have the jacket cut and mostly sewn today. Tomorrow finish the jacket and start on the pants. Then onto the secret part of the project. For the record, I hate buttonholes and zippers.

Peter got back rather early yesterday morning. He took the day off to try to get back some of the sleep that he lost and spend sometime with his family which was nice.

Does anyone know what is up with Photobucket? I was trying to put some pictures in to it and it was not letting me do anything.

Yes, I did see the pictures of Peter and Val Kilmer from the Activision panel. I got the explanation after I saw the pictures. Apparently Peter made some comment about three gorgeous blonds being on the panel and Val thought that was funny.

We had one heck of a thunderstorm about 10pm. This morning, other than water in the recycling can, there is not much evidence of it except the lawn looks a little greener.

Fig is chasing invisible things again. She is in full crazy kitten mode. Hard to believe that she will be a year old this August.

Peter’s new book Camelot Papers is available as an e-book on most platforms and a POD on Amazon. It’s a fun read.

I think today is laundry day. Just a hunch.

I am grateful for whatever I can get done today. I just need to get over my initial fear of screwing up the fabric I bought.

Crafty Tuesday Falling Way Behind on D’Con 2011

Posted By on July 26, 2011

I am behind on my schedule by quite a bit. The only thing I got done this week was the muslin for the X-outfit and I even didn’t finish that.

It is 37 days to DragonCon and I am behind. Not a great place to be but I think I can get back on track.

I also added one thing to the list because someone is going to be a DragonCon and due to events at SDCC, I am making him a puppet. I am more than happy to do so since he is such a cool guy and I have all the materials already for this one so it is just a matter of construction.

It does mean that one or two things that I might have done have gone into the idea bin until the next convention.

I do think I did solve my biggest “How the heck am I going to achieve that effect” yesterday. It is going to be interesting if it works the way I want it do. If not then I go to plan B which will take twice as long as plan A.

So starting today as a subsection of this blog is going to be the How many Days to DragonCon and what did I get done that day to give me some kind of idea of where I am.

I think part of it has to do with I need to throw myself into the X-outfit rather than keep thinking about it. I have thought and researched it to a fare-thee-well but since the outfits are all different, I have some latitude as to what I am going to make. So I need to take that and know that whatever I make, it will look good enough for DragonCon. Then onto the prop for the piece which is going to be a lot of work in its own right.

After that I start on the DragonCon Art Show Build. Parts are going to go fast and other parts are going to take longer than I hoped. But 37 days and I just need to put one foot in front of the other and start down the path to creation which I can do.

Peter gets back today from his adventures on the West Coast. I know it will be a day or two before he is back to normal and it will be nice to have the parental backup again.

I am grateful for what I did figure out so I can just go for the gusto and just make things now.

NWR for Torchwood Miracle Day Ep. 3

Posted By on July 25, 2011

So we are a little less than a 1/3 of the way in. This episode moved us forward and reminded me of why I like watching Torchwood.

Spoilers behind the cut and in the comments.

I sometimes forget how good Barrowman is as an actor and then he does just a little thing that reminds me why I appreciate him as an actor. He is good at the subtle that later pays off but he can also act in very broad strokes. And I had forgotten how good Eve Myles is until this episode.

Mekhi Phifer is growing on me. He had been rather one note but this showed that it was more the writing than the actor. I hope that Alexa Havins character (Ester) makes it through the season and joins Torchwood. She is really our new fish out of water character like Gwen was in the first season.

Considering that we are about a 1/3 of the way through the 10 episode season, I am a little concerned that everything is going to get packed into the last two episodes rather than discovering as we go. Yes, we were introduced to the possible Big Bad this time around and I don’t mean Oswald Danes. I don’t believe that the BB is the ultimate BB in this story.

I am grateful that I got something added to my list of things to do for DragonCon.

My 2 cents on Amy Winehouse’s death

Posted By on July 24, 2011

Yesterday it was announced that Amy Winehouse had been found in her home dead. The cause of death is pending but I think we all suspect what it was.

The deaths in Norway are much more horrific and terrifying to me and I don’t understand those. I do understand to some degree what happened with Amy.

I have most of my adult life worked with creative folks in all kinds of different venues and circumstances. I have also worked with people who are functional for the most part but have serious issues with drugs and alcohol and many times these people are one and the same.

First time I had to confront a drug addict who was in a show I was stage managing was rather scary. For one thing this actor was known for his temper which could be violent and his use of drugs was pretty well known but directors loved him because he was such a good actor and could deliver powerful performances that would move you to tears. I found out from other actor that this guy had been doing coke with a friend in the dressing room after the show. I went to the dressing room and confronted the guy. I told him that I really didn’t give a crap what he did once he walked out of that stage door but when he was here, he was on my territory. And, since we were on a college campus, there were students here and he was suppose to be the professional that they were learning from. Did he really want them to learn this sort of unprofessional behavior? Apparently I had made a good enough impression on him that he didn’t try his rage thing but rather apologized for his behavior and promised to not do that again while he was in my show. And he was good to his word.

I was rather lucky because it could have gone very badly for me.

Over the years I gain a reputation in the theater community as firm but fair. Actors knew that their grievances would be heard and dealt with. Directors knew that I had a way of working with “difficult” actors and Producers knew I had a way of working with “difficult” directors. I just treated everyone equally when they walked into my rehearsal or show. Friendships were great but they stopped at the stage door when it came to certain issues.

There was one actor that I loved to work with. He was an older actor rather set in his ways which included a number of cocktails at various times during the day. He and I agreed that he was an adult and could drink whatever he wanted as long as it didn’t interfere with the show. He behaved himself for the most part until he went out for a long lunch with a buddy of his and showed up for rehearsal rather tipsy. I could see it from his walk in. I took the director aside and informed him of my suspicion. We quickly reworked the rehearsal schedule for the afternoon so I could get the actor out of there before everyone else showed up. I went and confronted the actor. He admitted what he had been doing at lunch. I just shook my head and informed him that I was mighty disappointed in him. I had trusted him to be there for rehearsal ready to go and he had let me down. He looked like he had been pole axed. I informed him that he was free for the afternoon and we were looking forward to him coming in for rehearsal tomorrow. I turned and he said “I’m sorry Kathleen. I am ashamed and I am sorry I lost your trust in me.” I will always remember that. He showed up the next day and for the rest of the shows stone cold sober. Anytime we did a show after that I didn’t have a problem with him and he told me a couple of years later he appreciated that I hadn’t let him get away with his usual behavior.

While I was in grad school there was a rather brilliant acting student that was magical to watch on stage. Your eye was pulled to him even if it was a minor role. He also had a serious heroin habit which he said he had kicked but he managed to hide it for a while but the truth did out. He went in and out of rehab a couple of times and seem to be on the path to recovery and then something would happen and he would be shooting up again. We did what we could for him supporting him in his recovery. His good friends kept an eye on him but eventually the call of the drugs came and he would follow their siren call. Post grad school he overdosed and that was that. We could all see it coming and did what we could be it was never enough.

From what I have dealt with the change can’t come from without. The change to confront the addiction has to come from within. And that is something I learned at a rather young age in my adult life. I have always support and encourage change in those addicts I have met in my various careers, but I know that I can’t make them change as much as it pains me.

For all of what Ms. Winehouse’s people said about her rehabbing and kicking her habits, I don’t think she ever made the change within that would have allowed her to get rid of those demons. I have seen it too many times.

But I have also seen people who have kicked their habits and move forward with life and do even more creative things than when they were on the stuff. So there is hope but again it has to come from within.

I am grateful for people who make positive choices in their lives.
