No Strings Attached

24 days to DragonCon. Yikes!

As usual there are spoilers behind the cut and in the comments.

This marks the halfway point in this saga and things did happen. The story did move forward. And the ending did up the stakes for some of our characters.

This time I noticed what was missing and has been missing since the Second season of Torchwood, which is the occasional humor. There were funny bits that made you laugh and cringe at the same time. Right now everyone has a dark cloud over them and making quips even about the current situation seems hollow. I understand that Torchwood is dark and edgy but dark and edgy with no soul isn’t very satisfying. I actually prefer the over all arcs of a season with done in one episodes and others that move the plot forward.

The new characters have problems and the old characters have a boatload of problems and issues. The Emo on this series is palpable. There are the beginnings of comradeship among the characters but there is a lot of bickering and pìššìņg matches as well.

I will continue to watch in hopes of improvement.

I am grateful for Angry Birds.

OK we are 29 days to DragonCon and I have gotten one of the big projects out of the way almost.

Behind the cut are pictures of the X-men First Class Jacket and pants. Here is what I have left to do.

1) The Snaps on the pants and jacket
2) The harness that goes over the jacket and pants.
3) The other big project that completes the look

I am going to be turning this into mostly a record of getting ready for DragonCon so feel free to follow a long. There will be occasional commentary on other things but I am locked into DragonCon for the foreseeable future.

Today I plan to finish the costume and fix the puppets for the puppet slam which will be at DragonCon on Sunday Night at 11:30pm.

I am grateful for how far I have gotten.

Ok this was much more like it. We are almost halfway through and this felt like Torchwood again. The other episodes had Torchwood characters in them and they played with the name but this was Torchwood.

Yesterday we took Caroline to see the Smurf’s Movie.

The Smurfs have been a part of my family since the 70s I think. We have the graphic novels at my parents house. My youngest brother has a number of the figurines that came out. We can smurf with the best of them.

I had some reservations about a Smurf movie but it had Neil Patrick Harris and Tim Gunn in it so I did want to see it.

Since it was raining yesterday morning, we decided to go the movies and found the first show of the Smurfs had sold out. So we opted to go to our secondary theater and see it there.

It was very smurfy indeed. No really, it was a good summer popcorn flick. There was enough stuff for the adults that one was not overwhelmed by all the smurfy bits that were aimed at kids.

Hank Azaria does an excellent rather over the top Gargamel and I do like how they worked Azrael where you pretty much knew what he was thinking at any given situation. How they worked Tim Gunn into it was fun and yes I know it was Tim Gunn being a character that is exactly like Tim Gunn but it was still fun esp. when he got his signature phrase into the mix,

And the Smurfs are very well done. There are some minor quibbles I had with interaction between the humans and Smurfs due to odd placement of hands and eye lines but over all it is pretty slick. It was interesting to hear Alan Cumming talk in pretty much his normal accent. The casting of the voices is pretty much spot on and the use of the word Smurf is both done affectionately and for some serious laughs. They do a nudge nudge wink wink to how absurd using the word Smurf.

Don’t go into this expecting some great cinema masterpiece but do go in and expect to walk out with a smile on your face unless you happen to think that Grouchy Smurf is the best Smurf ever. So go and have a Smurfy good time.

I will say that we saw it in 2-D and I am glad that we did since the open sequence, which probably kicks serious smurf in 3-D, would have made me motion sick in 3-D. You could see where the 3-D would have added to the experience so if you like 3-D, this one has enough to make it worth your while.

I am grateful that we had such a Smurfy Time.

Smurfs opens today. My youngest brother was quite the fan in his day. I have introduced Caroline to the graphic novels which she has enjoyed. And it had Neil Patrick Harris in it.

Got the lining done and the sleeves started. This is going to take more time than I thought due to some of the construction is rather complicated and takes a number of passed on the sewing machine. I also ran out of the thread I had been using. I thought I had another one but it was not to be so I went to the cloth store and got more so I lost some time for lack of materials.

DragonCon in 34 days.

Off to get things done.

I am grateful to Peyo for all the entertainment he has given my family
