I can remember as a kid flipping through the New Yorker Magazine and looking at the cartoons. There was one cartoonist that I loved more than all the others which was Chas Addams. There was just something quirky and fun about his cartoons. I didn’t get a lot of the jokes until I was older but the style always appealed to me.
I didn’t see the TV show until much later in my life and found out that the break in the cartoons from Mr. Addams was because the New Yorker didn’t want to help him promote the TV show. I enjoyed the show a lot. Peter and I agree that the Addams family is probably the most functional family depicted on television.
I heard that they were going to make a movie of the TV series. I was dubious about it until I heard the casting and then I was on board. It didn’t disappoint and I think Mr. Addams would have been happy with the film since you could take his drawings and superimpose them on pieces of the film.
I will admit that the moment that Peter and I heard they were doing an Addams Family musical we were so there. Especially when we heard who the leads were. We went to see it and were not disappointed. The puppets by Basil Twist were a bonus. We took Caroline who loved it and we listen to the soundtrack on long trips.
Charles Addams made it OK to laugh at the macabre. To look at something with a dark slant and find humor in it. His characters would shout Boo and then giggle about it.
Today’s Google Doodle here in the US is a tribute to Mr. Addams and his beloved characters. I think I am going to pull out my Charles Addams coffee table sized book of his art and give it a read and a serious giggle.

Comes down to shows like Project Runway, Work of Art, and Faceoff. I think I like the skill reality shows with things that you can quantify to the reality shows that people get “voted off” for something that can’t really be quantified.
Last night Project Runway: All Stars started up. None of the usual faces for Project Runway were seen either in the workroom or on the judging panel. However Isaac Mizrahi had been the mentor type in the Fashion show, which was sort of a Project Runway type show. Replacing Tim Gunn (who can’t really be replaced. I’m sorry he’s Tim Freaking Gunn and now a national institution) with Joanna Coles, Marie Clair’s Editor-in-Chief as the mentor. I was unsure about it but I thought that she did a good job and brought up things for the designers to think about. She said in an interview that Tim got the undergrads and she got the graduates of the Project Runway program and I have to say that’s a great way to think about it.
Besides any show that has Miss Piggy as a judge at one point has my attention. Especially if they are designing for puppets.
I am going to allow spoilers for last night’s episode in the comments but I am going to keep this entry spoiler free if you haven’t seen the episode.
Next Wednesday on SyFy begins the next season of Faceoff which is the special effects make-up show. They seem to be starting with a Wizard of Oz challenge. I really enjoyed last season and look forward to this season. It is worth a gander if you like special effects and monsters. And I can say that last year I learned a couple of make-up tricks I didn’t know which became useful later.
We just finished up a season of Work of Art and I can honestly say I haven’t a clue what the fine art world is looking for anymore. The person who won did a lovely gallery showing but was not my favorite gallery show of the three left. And who was in and out in some of the episodes seemed almost arbitrary at times. Some good artists got knocked out before I think they hit their stride.
I am grateful for reality shows that are based on true talent rather than looks and personality (OK sometimes the personality does get into it).

At my bowling league on Monday nights there are a set of TVs over the bowling area. On Monday night in our area they are tuned to ABC because we enjoy Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune while we bowl. They stay tuned to ABC because a number of the ladies like “Dancing with the Stars” and “the Bachelor” which seem to alternate on Mondays at 8 o’clock.
This past Monday was the beginning of the next season of the Bachelor, which is a show I don’t care for very much because the premise rubs me the wrong way for many reasons, which I will not get into. They were introducing the potential mates to the Bachelor, who has some tragic story of his own that took place on the Bachelorette I believe, and as they were introducing them they were giving some basic stats as to where they were from and what they did. Model caused me to snort my ginger ale a little because I added the word lingerie to it rather quickly. But one sort of bothered me and it shouldn’t have. One of the ladies was listed at Blogger. So now I have a job title to add to my list of things I have done?
I went to look at her blog and at the time I was not impressed. Now it is under construction probably because of this past Monday and her uptick in traffic. So in one show she has probably increased her web footprint by quite a bit. But how long will it last? And considering her behavior during that first hour, why is she even there if she is that much of an emotional mess?
Think about it I could call myself an International Blogger since I know my blog is read in a number of different countries. I don’t have the world’s biggest readership but it is pretty consistent. I tend to have a bit of an uptick with New Who Review and Crafty Tuesday but overall my numbers aren’t too bad.
I know a couple of people who make a decent living off of their blogs and some that have parlayed their blogs into careers. But I don’t think that going on the Bachelor is the way to financial independence and honestly it makes some of the rest of us look cheap and tawdry but I am betting there are lots of cheap and tawdry bloggers out there that make her look good. And I hope she gets what she needs out of this show but she isn’t making bloggers look real good/sane.

When you have a child, there is the time of the year that you switch their clothes for the season and remove those that are too small or you know will be too small next season. Today I need to go through Caroline’s summer and winter clothing and remove that which is too small along with putting away her summer clothing until next year.
As you age there are things that you have to sort out both physically and mentally. Some things are hard to get rid of and others you are glad to have done with. Yes, there are times I wish I could go back and tell my younger self to be kinder to my body so it would be in better shape now. I honestly don’t think I would listen to myself.
I find that when I am physically sorting, I tend to mentally sort through things. The activity seems to fire up that part of my brain. Right now I have a lot that mentally I need to sort through to get to the next step whatever that step turns out to be.
So today is all about clothing. Caroline’s and the laundry. I can get this all done before she comes home from school.
I am grateful for things that are in place and in order.

Crafty Tuesday is a place for me to either talk about the process of my slightly twisted creative mind, show a step by step on some project I am working on, talk about things in the art world esp. Science Fiction Art Shows, or anything else I deem part of the subject.
I think I am going to be mirroring this in a couple of other blogs that I have to give some content to them all. On Dreamwidth I am Puppetmaker and on Blogger I am Puppetmaker. Puppetmaker was taken on Live Journal when I joined so there I am Puppetmaker40. All are entitled No Strings Attached as is my web log that runs off of Peter’s web log.
This year I plan to have more process pictures since a lot of people seem to like that. I am even going to go ahead and try to make an Instructable for the papier-mâché masks that I learned from a mask maker back during my college years. Some of the costuming stuff I will show after we use them.
In terms of what I will be making, I think I see more dolls in my future like the Steampunk Animals and the Spring Rabbit I did last year. I also have a couple of puppet ideas I want to execute. One of them is going to take me into some electronics I haven’t done before so that should be exciting.
For learning I am sticking to knitting and crocheting as my new skills for the year but like every year, I expect I am going to pick up a thing or two that I am not expecting because I need them to complete something.
