Happy Birthday to My Mother 2021

Posted By on March 5, 2021

Yesterday I was making Chicken Marsala for the family from my copy of “Recipes from 1146 Lullwater RD by the Cook” which is a cook-book complied by my mother of all the recipes that the family loves. This year Caroline got her copy which she loves.

When I was growing up my mother would make me clothing to wear. I would watch her through the whole process. It seemed like magic at the time. She taught me how to sew and I am teaching Caroline. It might not be magic, but she has given me short cuts and ways of avoiding errors and problems that seem like magic.

I know how to clean and how to get rid of molds and others things that are not nice to have around the house from her. She is a nurse and knows how to make sure things are clean and made sure we knew too.

She is the peacemaker in the house. She knew how to deal with four children, who were 4,3, and 2 years apart. She treated us as individuals and knew what might work for one would not work of the other three. She still does that.

If I ever had a plant question, she is my first call. I have watched her garden and have a hard time not eating fresh off the vine tomatoes.

One of her nicknames is Dr. Mom since we consult her about all kinds of medical things. She is the one who told us to take Peter to the hospital when he was having a stroke rather than drive to pick Caroline up in Jacksonville.

She is an amazing Grandmother to her three granddaughters. They love her very much.

Happy Birthday Mom!

I am glad we facetimed earlier today.

I hope to be there for next year’s celebration.

Love

Your Eldest Daughter

Kathleen

It is very cold with gale force winds making it feel like -1.

I have been watching all kinds of craft competition shows on various platforms we have.

I learn a lot watching these shows.

I now know a lot more about glass blowing because of Blown Away.

I have learned all kinds of things about making Floral arrangements because of the Big Flower Fight and Full Bloom.

I know more about clay and how to work it from the Great Pottery Throwdown.

I love Project Runway and Next in Fashion along with a number of other of the fashion design shows.

I have learned a lot about sewing from various sewing shows that show techniques that I can use in my work including how to deal with some issues I have had trouble with for years.

Right now, I am watching Making It. I really wish I could see the first season.

I got three UFOs done and out the door.  Now onto the next one(s).

First, we need to clean up our workspace to be able to continue.

Anything to stay inside and warm.

I am grateful for all that I learned from watching these shows.

MMHCI One Year Ago Covid showed up in NYC

Posted By on March 1, 2021

Today marks the first official patient with the COVID-19 recorded in New York city.

The beginning of our national and global nightmare.

I am proud that I have made it this far with only a couple of meltdowns.

I chalk it up to my family, my friends, my support system, and medication.

It has not been easy, but it is getting easier.

As of today, I can get the vaccine from the New York supply. This will be a lot of checking and refreshing until I get lucky. I am looking forward to getting a crack at the federal supply.

I hate not knowing what is next. That has giving me more anxiety than just about anything else.

At least now I am getting better information in a timely fashion.

Having a job helps my mental health.

Being creative helps my mental health.  I have begun to accept my limitations and not beat myself up when I get behind.

I am grateful for everything that helps my mental health.

Thinking about the past year

Posted By on February 28, 2021

We are coming up on the one-year mark of New York shutting down.

Friday Peter received his first shot of the COVID vaccine. He has his second shot scheduled. There was a serious sigh of relief in this household.

The Vaccine will be available to me on March 1st. This means I will be refreshing the NY vaccine site a lot until I get an appointment. Caroline is looked at May for her shot.

I was looking over my entries for last year on my web log.

A year ago, Caroline was in Miami Ohio for her Robotics competition. This year the contest was cancelled. Caroline is rather upset about this since she worked long and hard on that and this year, she would be a senior so she would be top dog.

We had no idea what was on the horizon.

Since then, our world was turned upside down and sideways.

We wear masks to keep each other safe. Now they are suggesting double masking to avoid the more contagious forms of COVID.

I think I am going to make some more masks to accommodate this.

I am glad that we have a better grasp on what is going on. The chaos this has caused is getting sorted out.

The unknowing was probably hardest for me to cope with.

I am grateful for things that feel normal again.

At least it is raining rather than snowing

It is a soggy morning as the rain falls. On the plus side, the snow mountains are now hills.

Apparently, I didn’t post on Tuesday so I will save that entry for another time.

I have applied for an editorial job at Del Rey. I would really like to get it since it would be picking up from where I was eighteen years ago this time of the year. It would be a good fit for me, and I know I can knock it out of the park. There would be a certain serendipity to it all if it does happen. So, think good thoughts unless you have a connection at Del Rey and then could you put a good word in for me please.

I am still enjoying and appreciating the job I do have. It has the kind of challenges that I groove on. I also enjoy the customers. It is nice to help people create things and be able to give them advice on how execute an idea. I like the management team and my fellow workers. There is not a slacker in the bunch. Considering some of the retail jobs I have done over the years, this is heaven. The managers have confidence in the workers and that helps a lot.

Caroline is going to school five days a week and she is loving it. Most of the classes she signed up for do not work well remotely like wood shop, piano, and sculpting along with theater. She is taking a few AP courses as well that work OK remotely.

She worked very hard to get to this point and took extra classes to make her Senior year a fun one. COVID tried to get in the way, but she is still having fun.

And that is what a lot of people are doing, finding ways to do things in the time of COVID. Anything we can do to feel more normal that we can do safely is a good thing.

I am grateful for normal safe activities.
