No Strings Attached

We made it to Jacksonville. Not that the weather didn’t try to stop us. I had forgotten how torrential the rain can be in the South. A lot of blinking lights and driving at least 20 miles under the speed limit. I felt sorry for the three guys on motorcycles huddled under a bridge waiting for it to pass.

So part one of the trip is under our belt and we have a couple of days to get the road noise out of our ears.

Caroline is happy that she will be seeing all three of her sisters within a week. It may not be at the same time but at least she will see them.

She is looking forward to seeing her Aunts and Uncles and Cousins in Atlanta. She is all about family this week.

Next week is her veg week except the homework she was given to work on over the break. I don’t remember getting homework for the break unless it was a long term project.

I am grateful for drivers who drive to the elements.

That time of year where you have the presents but now you have to wrap them.

I have that and a lot of other things to wrap up before we head out on our holiday adventure.

So start a point A and work my way to point Z with a viewing of the Hobbit in there somewhere.

I am surprised that something I put up on Tumblr got some traction. I was just comments for the 30 people who follow me about Once Upon a Time but the comment is going further afield than I thought I would. Just FYI my tumblr handle is Puppetmaker40.

I need to get my twitter account working as well. It has been kind of dormant for a while. I need to get it to feed into my Facebook account but it has been thwarting me.

But that is neither here nor there today which is all about the house and the cats and the laundry and the packing and the wrapping and whatever else needs be done before I hand the house over to the cat sitter who will have her first encounter with Inky.

I am grateful for scotch tape and scissors being where I need them.

In two weeks it will be next year.

Tempus Fugit

Getting the last of things I need to do before we hit the holidays.

Today I am going into the city to attend a friend’s holiday party.

Tomorrow I pack for our trip.

Saturday I am going to see the Hobbit.

Sunday is travel day.

And so forth and so on.

In between all that is the daily grind that is life as we know it.

When living in a multi-religious household you learn about each other’s beliefs and customs. I knew about Hanukkah before I got together with Peter but I didn’t celebrate it.

So today I pull out the Mickey Mouse Menorah (really a Disney Menorah) and clean out the wax left from last year to get ready for this evening and the lighting of the candles.

Getting ready for the holidays can be stressful. There is a lot that goes into it with a pretty good rate of return. My stress has nothing to do with the holiday.

Bowling went OK last night. I need to pre-bowl for next week since I will be traveling. Which reminds me that I need to get the house ready for our house/cat sitter. The nice thing is that the house still looks good from Caroline’s party so this is not going to be too hard to do.

I am also starting to get ready for holiday travel, which can be stressful in its own right.

I have a few things I need to do today to keep the ball rolling in the right direction.

Inky is trying to dip her tail in my coffee. So far I have managed to avoid that.

Libraries are cool. Support your local library.

Still processing that last episode of Once Upon a Time. Wow, they just pulled all the stops out on that one. Still gets me when I watch the second scene at the town line.

Ascension was interesting and I was enjoy it until I got to the end and now I have to see what is next. A very smart piece of TV over all. Did drag a bit in the middle but made up for it at the end.

Honestly it looks like it is going to snow today but it is already 40 heading for 50. Rain predicted later but I want to get the lights up before tonight.

I am grateful for learning about other people’s religions from practitioners of those religions.

I know she has seen it but was probably too young to remember it so she is really playing attention now.

The hard part is not answering her questions because I know the explanation is later in the film. I did identify a number of critters for her along the way.

It is nice seeing it on a larger screen of the TV but I still would like her to see it sometime in the movie theater so she can see all the stuff in the edges of the film. I had forgotten how realized they made this world.

Caroline enjoyed it. She liked the Podling village a lot. She loved Fizzgig and thinks her favorite character was Kira.

A few comments that were made along the way.

Caroline: How is he going to figure out which is the true shard?…OK the power of music for the win.

Caroline: They KILL the Podlings?
Me: Not quite.
Caroline: They SUCK OUT THEIR SOULS?!?!?
Me: Pretty much.
Caroline: Well that’s just wrong on so many levels.

Caroline: Ah so if something happens to a Skesis then it happens to a Mystic. So if one of them vanishes in a puff of flame, the rest of the mystics say “There goes Bob the Mystic. Oh well.” and continue to walk to the castle?
Me: Pretty much.

Caroline: So they split themselves into good and evil and then figured out that was a bad idea and had to wait until the stars came around so they could get themselves back together.
Me: Yep
Caroline: Not a great plan.

I showed her pictures of UrAc the mystic I took care of when I worked at the Center for Puppetry Arts. I told her the tale of how his head would slip from its armature on occasion and, since I had the longest arms, I got to put my hand into his head and put it back up. The amazing thing was that when I lifted the head up, the eyes would catch the light and the face would come to life. I would let him look around for a bit before putting his head back in place. Those were some sweet puppets.

I plan to show her the Making of special later today so she can see all the behind the scenes stuff going on. It was amazing what they did for the time. None of it was CGI. It is the first live action movie with no humans visible in it.

It remains an incredible visionary piece.

I am grateful that I was able to share Dark Crystal with Caroline.
