Crafty Tuesday Going Off the Deep End

Posted By on January 12, 2016

Yesterday online it was hard not to see people talking about David Bowie. It reminded me a bit about what happened when Jim Henson died but without the internet component since it didn’t really exist yet.

Some where on Twitter someone wrote the following Today, in honour of David Bowie, please take a little time to work on that weird thing you secretly create, whatever it is. He’d want you to.

Later that evening we had the moment of Zen on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah in which is it Mr. Bowie talking about taking a risk creatively. He talked about going out to where your feet don’t quite touch the bottom and you don’t feel secure and then you are almost where you need to be.

I am going to take that to heart and this year I am going to try some things I have thought about doing creatively that I have pulled myself short on for whatever reason whether it be I don’t think I have the skill set or the right tools or the knowledge to pull what I want to do off.

What I do have is resources and friends who can give me help and the knowledge to do what I want to do.

Sure there are going to be other things I need to do but I am going to take some time for me and my creative journey which I really don’t think I have consciously done in a couple of years. Accidently yes I have but not on purpose.

Sink or swim at least it will be magnificent either way.

I encourage you to do the same. Let’s create.

I am grateful for this metaphoric kick in the pants that has gotten me to thinking about my creativitiy.

RIP David Bowie

I woke up this morning the first day in about a week without coughing up a lung or waking up while coughing up a lung. I could breath through my nose. I got up without a coughing fit and actually felt almost normal. There was some coughing once I was up but it was not that bad.

I went on Facebook and the first thing I saw was Toby Froud’s post about the passing of David Bowie. It was simple. A picture of Toby from Labyrinth sitting in David Bowie’s lap captioned “so sorry to hear about David Bowie”. The next post was from Mike Quinn about working with Bowie on Labyrinth which he starts with “after making sure it was not a hoax.” And I knew that the Thin White Duke had shuffled off this mortal coil.

It is hard to summarize David Bowie because he defied being put into a box and labeled. He re-invented himself or his public self over and over challenging people to see the similar in differences. He spoke to the other inside us and told us it was OK to be different to be ourselves within a world that might not understand us.

The Man who fell to Earth was my first “x” rated film that I saw.

He and Iman will always be one of my New York City moments. It was the kind of a spring day that you live for and I was walking with a friend to get lunch. We were walking along and coming towards us was David Bowie and Iman hand and hand. We gave the New York Nod to them as in “we recognize your greatness” and they returned it with a smile as in “thank you” and we went our ways.

He released a new album on his birthday this year. We didn’t know this was his good-bye to us at the time but listening to it now I can see that it.

Good-bye and God Speed to Ziggie Stardust and the myriad of other characters he brought to life.

My sympathies to his family and friends.

I am grateful that I did have the NYC moment.

RTBCKI Sick of being Sick edition

So day three of this crud was just as bad as day two but now I have strained both intercostal and oblique muscle groups by coughing. The sad thing is that I did one on one side and one on the other so there is no getting by some extra pain with each cough.

Yes, I will go see a Doctor about this on Monday even if it is a Doc in the Box because the over the counter cough remedies aren’t cutting it including the spoonful of honey.

I watched the Chiefs/Texans game yesterday. That was a little one sided but not totally unexpected. I am thinking my sister-in-law is happy about the Steelers pulling it out against the Bengals at the last minute. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Packers make it a little further but then I think I just cursed them. The Seahawks and the Vikings is a coin toss.

Can someone tell me what the Mets are doing? Did they declare it a rebuild year yet again? I knew Murphy was going to go but had hoped they might have rethought that. But they aren’t doing anything to get this team back to the World Series. We need some people who can hit and play defense and they have to be one and the same.

We watched Inside/Out again last night. It is such a delightful movie that really takes some interesting choices about emotions and how they affect us. I am glad that it was shown that there is a need to sadness in one’s life as well as joy, anger, fear, and disgust. If that’s what is living in my head, I am fine with it and it explains so much.

I am looking forward to Zootopia. I have a basic idea of what it is about but the scene with the sloths at the DMV had me laughing so hard, I want to see what else they can do with the concept.

Dr. Strange has my stamp of approval so far, as if they needed or wanted it. As some of you know Stephen Strange is my favorite Marvel character out of the entire pantheon and I really want this film to be good. I am even fine with Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One just because of what she did in Constantine the film which are the only watchable scenes in that.

It is a good time for comic book fans and other media. We have TV shows based on the characters we love. We have films to go see. It is not strange for an adult to be reading comics or graphic novels anymore. Most of the comic book stores are now much more family friendly or at least the ones I go to. Caroline feels perfectly comfortable in a comic book shop and chats with other kids her age there about what she is reading and what they are reading. She wears her comic book t-shirts to school and gets compliments on them.

Wow I went a whole paragraph without coughing. May be I am getting better or the coffee is helping. Either way it was nice while it lasted.

I am grateful for things that keep me from coughing.

I feel like I am purring

Posted By on January 9, 2016

There is a rasp in my chest that I can hear every time a breath. It sounds like I am purring. I will be very glad when it goes away because it is not a pleasant feeling and I am coughing so hard I am losing anything I am putting in my gut.

Over the counter cough meds aren’t doing it anymore so if this doesn’t start getting better, I see a Doctor visit in my near future. My ribs hurt and I am tired of coughing. My throat feels like a raw wound.

After being fever free, the fever came back with a vengeance along with the lovely stomach cramps yesterday so that’s two days basically without food. Not the weight loss program I would recommend for anyone.

Peter and Caroline are off running some errands that we needed to do that I have been unable to do. I have told them to feel free to stay out as long as possible because I don’t want them to get sick and they are probably tired of hearing me trying to cough up a lung.

Remember a couple of days ago when I said I was not a good sick person? Believe me now?

I am officially taking the day off to try to get this under control but I wanted to get this done to keep my streak going for a while longer.

I am grateful for every moment I am not coughing.

It is amazing how much better one feels fever free

Still have the cold and still have the cough which is annoying but the fever broke last night and I feel a lot better just for that. Today’s plan is drink fluids especially water and try not to hack up a lung. But I do feel better.

Today I will also be catching up on all the things I haven’t done the past couple of days due to being sick. I took care of the critical things and let some others slide. Peter was a big help in making sure that some things got done like Caroline to her flute lesson and the like. I didn’t feel safe behind the wheel of a car.

I think I may save the errands for tomorrow and finish the laundry today along with cleaning up the kitchen. Then puppets I think if I feel up to it or back to bed if I don’t.

The raspy sound in my lungs and throat that is causing me to cough is not fun.

I have some light bulbs to change as well. It has been dark/cloudy up here for a while. I think I need to get to the cat boxes sooner rather than later due to the weather. They are saying no rain but the clouds are telling me another story.

This weekend is a rare one where we don’t have anything planned and probably a good thing too considering our health.

I am grateful that the fever broke and I feel more human.
