RIP Lorna Kelly

Posted By on June 21, 2016

Some of you might know Lorna Kelly as the first woman to be a fine arts auctioneer at Sothby’s. Others might know her as an author and inspirational speaker. She also was the auctioneer for many a charity auction in New York City.

We met her through the Broadway Bears Auction and became friends. We would see each other at various Broadway Cares events and she would catch up on the kids and we would find out what she had been up to.

As an auctioneer she was magnificent. She could play the room and get things going then keep it going until the gavel came down. She was well known for the phrases, “Don’t look at them, look at me. Now the bid is (whatever it was)” and “I can wait”.

We knew that she had battle breast cancer and come back from it.

I also knew from talking to her some about her travels and work with the poor but until I read her NYT obit, I didn’t know the scope of it.

She believed in helping others and let her beliefs be known by her actions.

She was a one of a kind person that you are happy that you met them because they are so unique. I think she found our family interesting too. I know she liked my puppets.

The Bear auction has been done for a number of years but we would still see her at The Broadway Flea Market. It is going to feel very different this year. There is going to be one heck of a Lorna sized hole there.

She will be missed.

My sympathies to her friends and family.

I am grateful that I met Lorna.

Monday Motivations Oh Look the Oncoming Train

Ok I have less time than I think to do more than I can so now we have to break it down into HAVE and NEED and WANT. I have to do some of this because of obligations. I need to make some because they won’t leave my head until I do. I want to make other things but there are things that come first.

Of course two that I need to do are the most complicated.

Plus I had/have the back issue which went south again yesterday after I hiccupped. It is right between the shoulder blades and the stabby pain makes me wonder who I ticked off and why they have a voodoo doll of me.

But today is all about the housework that has been sliding a bit. I need to see what I can do and Caroline, when not taking exams, can help with what I can’t do as long as it is under 60 pounds. I think this is going to be one of those start in one corner and work my way around.

Then I can go back to the puppets and a short story that I am enjoying creating. After that puppets and novel.

As Dory says, “Just keep swimming”.

But first let’s find order in the chaos that has erupted due to puppet making.

I am grateful for that which will allow me to get stuff done.

Happy Father’s Day 2016

To all the Fathers I know both traditional and non-traditional, I wish you a good day.

Peter is not here as he is in Denver at a convention working so we are going to Facetime sometime this morning so Caroline can see her dad on Father’s Day.

I will try to get in touch with my father at some point today but I happen to know that he is rather busy today. So Da, if you are reading this and I didn’t get in touch Happy Father’s Day and I love you very much.

Caroline knows that her father is different from most of her friends’ dads.

For one thing she sees more of her father during the day than they probably do. He is there when she goes off to school and is home when she gets back from school.

His job has taken her some interesting places and allowed her to meet some fascinating people and do some amazing things. She does know how lucky she is.

This summer she is going to the SDCC for the first time. This is a convention that she has heard about from her parents and her sisters and the media. Now she gets to experience it. I am glad she had a serious growth spurt before the convention because now she stands a better chance of not getting knocked over. She is very excited about this. She knows that the reason she is going is her father and his achievements.

(for the VI: This is Caroline on the left and Peter on the right standing under a doorway that has the Seal of the President of the United States over it. The American Flag is on the left and the Presidential flag is on the right. Caroline is wearing a blue dress. Peter is wearing a black shirt and black jacket)

I am grateful that Caroline and Peter have a good relationship.

Back Out

So yesterday I did give blood, which they were grateful for.

After giving blood, I reminded myself that I just voluntarily dehydrated myself so I started working on rehydrating.

My energy level was down most of the day, which was not unexpected but I got some stuff done again not as much as I would like.

Caroline played flute at the Teen Library opening. She was a last minute replacement so she learned her piece in 48 hours and performed.

We went to bed early and I got a decent night’s sleep.

Woke up this morning, petted Inky who was waiting for me at the top of the stairs, went down to the kitchen, yawned without stretching and threw my back out.

Yep, all I did was yawn and I am now in a world of hurt. I am moving very carefully to not antagonize the muscles. A dull painful ache I can deal with. The sharp stabby pain is where I have to draw the line to function. It

I had a couple of things that I had contemplated writing about today but now my focus is on moving carefully. Hiccuping hurts a lot. Right between the shoulder blades.

Now I am re-evaluating what I am going to be able to do today.

I am not going to berate myself for not being able to do all that I want to do rather I will do what I can and keep moving forward if my back allows it.

If not then I relax and go with the flow.

I am grateful for Caroline’s help.

Going to give Blood today

Posted By on June 17, 2016

Honestly I try to be pretty regular about donating blood but I have been slacking off for a bit the last year.

I got a call from the local blood bank and was informed that for my blood type, they considered what they had on hand as below critical and could I please come in and give some blood.

Now when I tried at DragonCon last year my iron levels were not to their liking. I am hoping that whatever that aberration was, it is no more. If it happens again, then I think I might be having a conversation with my physician about low iron levels.

Peter is in Denver for the Denver Comic Con this weekend. Stop on by and say ‘Hi’.

We were going to go with him however Caroline’s Exam schedule precluded us from going. She had an English final yesterday, a math final today and her science final on Monday. Then I think she has social studies on Wednesday and she is done. Regents start next year for her.

Puppet faces and clothing are the next thing to be done for the first set of puppets I need to pull off a miracle.

Caroline and I are making this a sewing weekend to finish up some projects and start a few new ones.

She has one activity this afternoon with the opening of the teen branch of the local library if she can get her flute part down.

Inky is melding with my hip. I am going to have an Inky sized bruise on my leg where she keeps head-butting me.

I am grateful that I can give blood and help.
