Or the first long day as one could see it.

Yesterday was about getting some dominos in place to see if I can knock them down in order later.

It also was about seeing friends and having some fun.

Caroline participated in her first panel at San Diego Comic Con.

Spotlight on Maggie Thompson

Maggie Thompson (Toucan blogger) interviews three other “Nerd Family” kids: Lora Boehm (daughter of John and Bjo Trimble), Sky McLeod (daughter of Scott McCloud and Ivy Ratafia), and Caroline David (daughter of Peter and Kathleen David). Check out what four generations of second-generation fans have to share.

It was an interesting panel. You can see how the attitude of the world outside of fandom has changed. Rather than having a fan life and your life outside of fandom, in Caroline’s case, they are now one and a the same.

Peter had his spotlight and received an Inkpot award for his body of work in comics. We are very pleased with that.

I went over to the Marvel booth to see that they had the Dr. Strange Costumes on display. I went and looked and figure out what I had done wrong on the costume for the puppet. The cloak now makes total sense and I found out some details about the back I hadn’t known. I did take pictures of the puppets with the costumes.

We spent some time talking to Richard and Wendy Pini who are good friends of the family. We caught up on stuff and Caroline got her Elfquest questions answered from the source. She does know how lucky she is.

I had a quick chat with various people I have known over the years. I plan to go visit some others today since they are trapped at their booths.

There were lots of things going on outside the convention. I walked to get lunch for us and came away with a bunch of free swag. The Sharknado people had the largest group watching what they were doing.

We were going to have dinner with some friends but everyone decided that they were all too tired for anything so we went our separate ways and found food before collapsing.

Today there are some plates spinning for some things we want to do on Saturday. I think we will find out yea or nay sometime today. One of these things would be great for me and one would be awesome for Caroline. But more on that only if it does happen.

I am grateful that Caroline did well on her panel.

Or as we call it, the first day of SDCC.

Through some help from Janet and the Guest Relations Team, we got our boxes of books and scripts from the hotel to the convention center.

Caroline got to watch the floor being put together as booths went from large wooden crates to amazing fun factories to assault the visual senses.

We set up our table and I took Caroline out to lunch. We went back amazed at what people got done in an hour and a half.

I caught up with some friends and made sure that the magician’s bag worked for my client, which it did. They love it and we have agreed that I will make another before NYCC. I have been informed that a certain section of fandom is going to hate me after this since I got rid of one of the biggest ways to game the system.

After that it was waiting for the fans and talking to friends as they wandered by.

We went back to the hotel room and got ready for today.

If you are a Ghostbusters (2016) cos-player, I got some really good shots of the backpack and a couple of the straps and the back of the pack that you usually don’t get but I happened on it before they put it up on the mannequin. You can find the entire folder here

I am grateful seeing SDCC through Caroline’s eyes.

Yesterday Peter fulfilled some of his agreed upon obligations with the convention while Caroline and I went to the San Diego Zoo to complete our panda trifecta.

We have seen pandas in Atlanta and Washington DC so seeing the ones in San Diego would complete the USA panda tour.

We did see them very briefly since it was, for San Diego, a rather hot day.

We were told to take the bus tour first to get the lay of the land and that was very useful.

Right now there is a lot of construction going on at the Zoo including a new panda habitat and a new African section so about a quarter of the zoo is under construction.

We did see a lot of animals that we wanted to see. Caroline finally saw a serval and we had the added bonus of seeing the kit too.

This zoo is doing the right thing by the animals by giving them the choice to go and hide or be seen. Also a lot of what is called environmental enrichment to give the animals something to do.

We spend close to 6 hours wandering around the zoo. Caroline rode in her first Aerial tram, which gave us not only a good view of the zoo but the surrounding area as well.

Today we are off to the convention itself to set up and welcome the fans.

Peter’s table is HH16 in artist alley and the puppets will be on display there.

I am grateful that Caroline and I had a lot of fun at the zoo.

That happens every summer since I moved up to New York almost 20 years ago.

It’s the mega-crunch day where I am trying to get us packed and stuff finished at the same time.

Peter has a list of errands as long as his arm to get done before we depart for Shoreleave.

I have a cape to pattern and sew along with some belts to finish and then the puppets are done and I can take a breath before the next convention.

I am going to consider the next week and a half one convention in two parts. Depending on my time commitments, I might have some more time to write or I might now.

I am grateful that I am as far as I am on the puppets.
