New Who Review for Under the Lake

Posted By on October 5, 2015

Again no spoilers for future episodes. But you’re allowed to speculate what is going to happen.

I enjoyed this one. I enjoy a good mystery and a good ghost story and this was both.

I like that the deaf character was played very well by Sophie Leigh Stone who is deaf and she was not a damsel in distress but a leader trying to do the best for her people.

None of the women were damsels in distress but some of the men were which was a nice flip.

I almost didn’t write this since the second half is going to reflect back on the set up in this episode but I thought it would be interesting to see what I would say without seeing the ending of the episode.

Show of hands, who else loved the social cue card? The speculation about the Aberdeen is that it is for Sarah Jane Smith as an apology or apologizing to someone from Glasgow for assume they were from anywhere but Glasgow.

I liked that this was a thinking episode and a bit of a bottle episode. Trapped underwater with ghosts is a good scenario for the Doctor to work through. This is one that you could drop any Doctor in and get about the same result.

And kudos to the team at Doctor Who for letting the deaf woman to be the leader of the group and no one even questions it at all. It just is. That she is deaf just is. And they used lip reading correctly as it how it really works. Having the translator seemed a bit much but I am willing to suspend my disbelief on that one.

So we have ghosts and a ticking clock and a time machine.

He took apart the radio to make a clockwork squirrel? At least he had a reason.

I am grateful for good episodes of Dr. Who that leave me wanting to see the next one.

Indeed. In fact, this season is gearing up to be a very good one. Three episodes, three winners. And that cliffhanger ! My giddy aunt ! How will things turn out this saturday ? Makes you wish you had a Tardis of your own, no ?

Still, I can’t help but be worried about Clara’s mental health here. She seems to be too willing to have an adventure. Not healthy at all, and the Doctor knows it. Makes me fear for her. Really. And is it me, or did the Doctor channel Leroy Jethro Gibbs ? Especially when he was dealing with the corporate executive (too dumb to live, that one) ?

Now I really have to see how often I can drop the phrase “clockwork squirrel” into casual conversation without sounding like a lunatic. (Okay, sounding MORE like a lunatic…)

BTW, Kathleen, did you catch that ?

I didn’t until it was pointed out to readers on http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk. Nice reference, methinks.
