Getting Ariel ready for College

Posted By on August 25, 2009

Ariel is off to college this weekend. The decision was made that it would be me to take her up there and get her set up for a variety of reasons including my ability to play serious tetris with all her boxes and things in the truck.

So yesterday we went and got her a few things she will need for college including a new pillow and bedding that will fit her bed since it is an XL twin. I have to pull some pots for her and a few other things like the extra can opener. She has, pretty much, the rest of the stuff she needs after she does her laundry. Yes, I am making her do her laundry this summer so that she can learn how to do it before she leaves the house.

Tonight she is off to see a band she likes with her father and a good friend of hers. Tomorrow evening she has her last night of bowling in the family league. Thursday evening she has a couple of friends coming over to help her with getting stuff together and down the stairs. Friday we are off to the college and setting her settled in for the next part of her life.

Caroline is adjusting to the idea that big sister is going off to college. I don’t think she has grasped that Ariel is going to be gone longer than the weekend but I think she’ll figure it out. She does know that Ariel is not going with us to DragonCon this year. I think once school starts for her and everything gets going, she’ll be fine. She’ll do iChats with Ariel and they will communicate with each other a lot. I really think the video chats are going to help a lot. I know that she knew my parents on sight because she saw them on the video when she was much younger.

I am grateful for friends who have my back. Y’all so rock.

I’m so grateful Robin and his dad can communicate via iChat, particularly since Dad’s lost his hearing. It’s nice that they can see each other and type at the same time.

    Good luck, Ariel!!

I almost feel like saying, “No, wait, whoa, there must be some mistake! Ariel is Peter David’s cute little girl that he would bring to conventions. She’s only about eight years old, that’s way too young to be headed to college!”

Then I remember that I am old. 🙂

    Congrats, Ariel!

College already? Dammit, I’m too old for this.

However, I’ve seen plenty of my students go off to school lately, including one of Katherine’s favorite babysitters — uh-oh.

Best wishes to Ariel. It’s one heck of a ride you’re about to begin — enjoy it!

You are a great example for all step-parents out there. Anyone who has read your blog and not known all the details of your life would probably not have known that Ariel is you step-daughter. You’ve never treated her as any less important to you than Caroline. I hope you can feel some sense of personal pride in how good a job you have done. Way to go, Mom.
