Mysterious Doll Project is not so Mysterious

Posted By on March 24, 2009

But first Heroes, wasn’t it nice to see Hiro ask like a Hero again? Peter’s comment, not a good episode for Blonds was it? I like that I want to watch that show again rather than I am watching it out of a sense of duty.

I am part of this doll challenge that is based on DiscWorld. I got the Wyrd sisters in luck of the draw (well really typing faster than anyone else). I have done research into the characters and I have a good idea what I am going to put together over the next week. Greebo is going to be a challenge too. I think I have a caldron or a mirror for them to stand around.

Today I want to get the basic bodies done and start on at least one head if not two. Magrat is going to be the hardest out of the set. So I have to decide if I am going from hard to easy or the other way around.

The next couple of days I plan to chart my progress on this project and I might even do a picture a day of where I am if anyone is interested.

But first I have a little lion to repair for Caroline. Nala’s front paw is separating at the seam. Once I get a couple of projects off of my sewing table, I’ll be putting bodies together. Also tomorrow is paper recycling with is a big deal for us and a local charity is picking up clothing tomorrow and boy howdy do I have clothing for them.

I am grateful that I did get some of my favorite DiscWorld characters to make.

  1. I just yammered on about the new Heroes on my blog as well. That show turned around so fast I dámņ near got whiplash.

I’m not yet good enough at sewing to actually make my own stuffed animals, though it’s definitely something I’d like to try. Any books or sites you can suggest to push me down that road?

My big pastime has been making superhero costumes for Build-a-Bear Workshop toys and presenting them as gifts to my favorite comics folks. Been a lot of fun presenting them, and as they say “Wow, that’s really cool, thank you for showing it to me”, I get to watch their jaws drop as I explain that it’s for them. Amazing how fun people act in the presence of teddybears. Hmmm, I wonder what character PAD would want?

I’m not Kath, but I make a lot of stuffed animals. The best books I know are out of print, but can be found quite cheaply on abebooks.com:

Sue Quinn, Creative Book of Soft Toys
Sheila McGraw, Soft Toys to Sew
Jodie Davis, Easy-to-Make Stuffed Animals and All the Trimmings

The best in-print book I know of is Soft Animals A to Z, by Carolyn Vosburg Hall, but the patterns are a little more advanced.
