RTBTCKI (Whether or Not it Snows)

We are getting a prediction of rain with a little snow and sleet mixed in. I am figuring that it will be less than that. Why? Because I got the larder stocked and Caroline has her snow boots that she loves to wear. I am prepared for it so it will yet again tease me and then go away.
In the continued suck that is 2008, Majel Barrett passed away yesterday. She was surrounded by her friends and family. She had leukemia. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the CARE Organization or Precious Paws both of which share Roddenberry’s love for animals and dedication to animal rescue.
I met Majel at a couple of conventions over the years. I do know from a friend that she did see my Klingon puppets at one point and thought they were very funny in a strange sort of way. I found her to be a very gracious lady who had a lot of patience with the fans especially the pushy ones. When you talked to her, you were the person she was paying full attention to. She will be missed by many. She did get the voice work done for the Star Trek movie so that will be her last performance.
Today I am going into Caroline’s school to help the kids make gingerbread houses. It should be a fun activity and the last one I am doing with the class this year. She is on winter break as of today. We have a number of things planned for the break. We are two weeks away from 2009. Let that one sink in for a minute. Two WEEKS from 2009. May 2009 be much kinder to us than 2007 and 2008 were.
This weekend will mostly be about getting ready for next week. Laundry is mostly done. I’ll have about two loads to do and then I can pack for the trip to see my folks. Caroline is excited about seeing her grandparents.
I have to say that iChat has given my parents the opportunity to really be able to interact with their granddaughter. She knows what they look and sound like because she sees them on the computer. When she was much younger, she would adjust to seeing them probably much faster than she would if she had rarely seen them. For her, seeing her grandparents on the computer screen is just a part of life but for me it seems like I am living in the house of the future. We have video phones which even 10 years ago were things of science fiction.
So my question to you, dear readers, what invention do we have now that amazed you the most? What did you not expect to see in your lifetime that might be commonplace now?
I am grateful for warm boots and shoes that keep the wet out.
What amazes me is my BlackJack… I got it last June about a week before we had severe storms here in MI and had no power for 4 days in the middle of storm after storm… It allowed me to keep up with the weather and catch the tornado warning for my area in time to get down to the basement along with the 2 families who live on the 2nd floor around me. Luckily, the tornado didn’t show up, but the BlackJack was a lifeline to the world.
I really hate to rub it in, Kathleen, but we have at least 6 inches of snow right now and more falling… it looks like a Christmas card outside… and it gave me one extra day of vacation – today became a snow day!

It’s blizzarding outside. The cat came in like an abominable snowman.
Ok, I’m weird, but I am still astounded by a fax machine. I was in Baltimore, called home for Mike to fax me certain pages from a document at home I needed for a language panel, and five minutes later they were in my hand, 300 miles away. I’ve been around computers for 30 years; I expect them to do miracle things, but a fax machine? It’s like a transporter!
(But the video conferencing on the computer is pretty sci-fi too)
Oy. I’m about to jump in my car in North Carolina and set out for Upstate New York…looks like I’ll be hitting some white stuff on the way. Oh well, at least they know how to keep the streets plowed in New York.

Hmmm. The invention that amazes me the most is the Blackberry. Not only a phone, but the emails. It is both a blessing and a curse.
