I’m talking Baseball

Posted By on October 25, 2007

Well the BoSoxs came out swinging and won the first one but that doesn’t give them the series, just a leg up on the next game. Remember the AL pennant went the distance and I won’t give up on the Rockies yet.

With Joe Torre given a choice of taking a rather substandard contract or leaving the Yankees and he took the high road and hit it at the same time, there has been a lot of talk on the various sports radio stations about who is next in the role of punching bag for Steinbrenner. Currently it is looking like Don Mattingly is the front-runner with Pena being the dark horse. Whoever gets it is getting some major slack from the front office. They are going on record that they are not expecting a World Series the first year for this manager or possible even getting to the play offs. They are willing to give the person time to develop the team and his style with the team. I’m wondering how long that is going to last. I think was annoys me the most is that whoever is next is getting a much fairer shake than Torre ever got his entire career by the Yankee organization.

If the Yankees are smart, they let A-Rod go off and be fabulous elsewhere. But this is the Yankees we are talking about.

The Mets have to get their house in order. They need pitching especially on the back end of the game. Sure they did really well this year only to lose it in the last week of the season but the pitching was shaky most of the year. And I don’t think first base is sorted out yet. They have potential and lots of it but they need to not fall apart when they need to keep it together.

The Braves have seen this before. Most of the 70s were not kind to the Braves. But in the 90s, having built the farm team in the 80s, they came back and took it all. They dominated the National league for years. Then there were some bad trades and other moves and now the Braves are back in the 70s trying to figure out how to win ballgames and keep butts in the seats.

The Cubs fans have seen the light at the end of the tunnel and it turned into the on coming train. I predict that the Cubbies will be in the World Series sometime in the next 4 years but I’ll be surprised if they win. Again it is that potential thing that has not been fulfilled.

Then there are my poor Orioles. My first baseball team which would consider it a good season is they finished above .500. Someday they too will be in contention.

So what are your thoughts on the baseball season in general or your favorite team specifically?

I am grateful for the game of baseball.

The season that was….turned out surprisingly like I thought it would. I picked 4 of the six division leaders right…missed the Cubs and the Angels.

For next year, I think my Blue Jays are in a good place. They found a good starting rotation over the summer. Injuries hurt them a lot offensively but I expect them to be better with the bats next year.

The Yankees…well if they don’t have ARod, they won’t make the playoffs. The Red Sox look in good shape for next year, the only players they are likely not to have back are Schilling and Lowell and they have lots of young starters to make up for the loss of Schilling. If Lowell leaves maybe they’ll make a run at ARod. Orioles aren’t going anywhere.

Mets…they need to add three good starting pitchers to have any hope of improving. Offensively they could use a couple of corner outfielders.

I don’t see the Cubs being as good as you think…they are pretty thin at most positions. They need at least 2 better starters, someone that can really play CF and RF. Of course if they land ARod then all bets are off. Milwaukee looks to be the team to beat in the NL Central for the next few seasons. Has any team had as much good young talent all come up at one time before?

I like both Arazona and Colorado in the West, they have the best young players in the west and should improve.

AL Central is an interesting group of teams. I think Cleveland will win again next year but Detroits starting pitching could keep them close.

I just want this season to be over with, LOL! As a rabid Yankees fan and Red Sox hater, I can’t stand to see the Sox in the World Series, and winning, no less! (Sorry, I can’t help it, I was brought up to love the Yankees and hate the Red Sox, it’s in my blood!)I’ve not given up complete hope, but I don’t think the Rockies are coming back to win 4 of the next 5 games, they don’t have the post season experience. Once the Yankees were out of it, I was really rooting for the Rockies, it’s like all the stars aligned for them this year. They’ve had one hëll of a run.

I was really sad at the way the Yankees treated Joe Torre, he deserved much better. What more do they want? He won four World Series titles, and made the playoffs EVERY year he managed the team. I’m actually still amazed he lasted 12 years, I grew up a fan in the 70s, with the revolving door managers. I think Billy Martin managed 5 different times in the 70s/80s.

Joe brought class to the Yankees, and never lost his cool under the intense pressure in NY. I feel the same way I felt when the Yankees decided not to invite Bernie Williams back to Spring training this year, unless he came as a non roster invitee. You don’t do that to someone who’s been nothing but class for your organization from day one, and who’s been such an awesome performer for so many years. It’s a slap in the face.

I really hope that they decide to give Joe Girardi a shot at managing next year. I’m a big Mattingly fan (Donnie Baseball!), but I don’t think he’s ready to manage yet. And Joe is great with young players, he did a fantastic job in Florida two years ago with a team that wasn’t expected to do much.

It will be interesting to see what happens with all the free agents. I think they have to sign Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera. I think A-rod will go because he wants even more money than he has now. While I think he’s one of the greatest ballplayers ever, I won’t be too sad to see him go, he’s a prima donna, and I don’t like prima donnas. He will leave a huge hole, though, we don’t have another 3rd baseman! Maybe they’ll move Jeter to 3rd base if A-rod leaves.

Don’t count the Yanks out next year, though, one player won’t make that much difference if these rookie pitchers live up to their promise next year. A-rod carried the Yanks early on this season, in fact, he’s the reason they were in the playoffs at all this year; they shouldn’t play that badly next year where they need so much help!

The Mets had the most spectacular collapse ever this year, it rivals, and beats the 78 Red Sox Massacre. I was glad they kept Willie Randolph as manager (I have a soft spot for Willie since he played for my Yanks in the 70s/80s). You’re right, they need pitching.

I feel really bad for Oriole fans. They’ve got such a great fan base down in Baltimore, a fantastic stadium that’s one of the best ballparks in the country, and an owner who doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing. With all the money they spend on payroll, they should have a team that’s at the very least competitive every year.

  3. I’m rooting for the Rockies to come back against the Red Sox.

My son and I saw the game against Texas before they lost 30-3 and spiraled down into another of their late season losing streaks. Their pitching staff was hurt tremendously by all the injuries this season. At the last game this season that we saw (Sept. 24) there was a large Free the Birds group there. They want Angelos to sell the team.
