New Who Review for Army of Ghosts & Doomdays

Posted By on December 29, 2006

OK personally I think SciFi was smart by showing these back to back since they were one story cut in half. Army of Ghosts is the build but Doomsday is the capper for season.

Yeah I am cutting for spoilers early but I really don’t want to accidentally give away some splendid stuff.

I am grateful for 3-D glasses.

Favorite part of the entire episode for me has to be the smack talk between the Daleks and the Cybermen. That had me rolling on the floor. The amazing thing is both species have monotone voices but you could “hear” the tones in what they were saying.

Saddest part was the end. The last moments between Rose and the Doctor did move me to tears. Both actors did a great job of telling the story with just little looks and vocal inflections which said so much more than the words they were saying.

I’m glad that Jackie got together with Pete. Face it, they were made for each other. The meeting in the tunnel was wonderful.

Now more people understand why I had the puppet of my 10th Doctor wearing 3-D glasses. I had forgotten that this device was not used until the last episode.

Everyone was given something to do in these episodes that was important to the plot. Props to the writers to make Yvonne have a story through out the episode that had a pay-off.

Yeah it was a set up for Torchwood in some ways and a farewell to Rose in others but over all it worked for me.

For about a week there you guys were as up to date as fans in the UK.

Xmas day was pretty amazing for a DOCTOR WHO fan. As well as ‘The Runaway Bride’, the concert they did for Children In Need was running on a 90 minute loop on BBCi throughout the day; DOCTOR WHO CONFIDENTIAL was a 1 hour special looking behind the scenes of the concert; and Jo Whiley had David Tennant as guest co-DJ on her radio show, with lots of interviews with various of the show’s creators and DT perhaps giving away a little more about upcoming season 3 than he was supposed to. Good stuff.

I really liked it. I only had one gripe with the whole thing. Like last season’s two part ender with the Daleks, they bring back two of Doctor Who’s biggest monster/bad guy groups, the Cybermen and the returning Daleks, only to destroy them all by the end of a two parter. Why bring them back just to make them look that weak?

I would have liked to have seen some of them survive and head out to space to start rebuilding their armies. There’s just something odd about a Doctor Who universe were they’ve basically said that there are no longer Daleks or Cybermen in it (and they may also have nixed the Master as well).

An alleged quote from Russell T. Davies is that the Daleks always come back. Personally, I’d like to see them rely less on old monsters and keep creating new ones. Adults hate the Slitheen, but the kids in the UK love them. Then there’s the Ood, not to mention the Gelth. I can’t wait to see what they come up with for Series 3.

In the first series, they brought back the Daleks, in the second they brought back the Cyberman. I figured the Master would be a good choice for the return of a major villain in the third. Personally, want I want to see now is more information about the Time War. I’d also really like to see a Multi-Doctor story at some point. I’d love to see Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant share some screen time and I wouldn’t mind seeing Paul McGann thrown in there as well. Based on what I’ve read, though, I have a feeling Eccleston wouldn’t return to the role. He seems to be the sort who likes to move on. But who knows, maybe if the writing stays up to par …

Though it’s been publicly announced on the BBC website, I suppose some might regard the following as a spoiler:

In re the Daleks, as I understand it, the BBC paid the estate of Terry Nation for the use of the Daleks for three years, so they were always going to be in each of the first three seasons. Whereas they tried to make their appearance a surprise in seasons 1 & 2, they’ve already announced the title of the first episode of the two-parter they appear in next season: ‘Daleks in Manhattan’, and that this is set in the 1930s.

And as for new monsters, there are plenty of those coming up from what I saw in the season 3 trailer at the end of ‘The Runaway Bride’.

I had heard rumor that the Master was NOT in the cards nor was the Rani because RTD didn’t think much of either villian.

I have seen Runaway Bride now and found it very much fun. I do love the way that David T. plays the alieness that is the Doctor.

  7. David says:

Jerry, atleast one of the Daleks seemed to escape. When the Daleks were being sucked into the void, the black dalek said something and then disappeared. It looked like it turned invisible or teleported away.

“Emergency temporal shift.” It time travelled.
