Squeeeeeee!(A Happy Sound of Fannish Joy)

Posted By on January 13, 2006

SciFi Channel will be showing the 13 episodes of Dr. Who with Chris Eccelston. Yeah, sure I’ve seen ’em but now all my friends and relatives can see what I enjoyed so much. No word yet if they are going to pick up the first season of David Tennant but if the ratings come in solid for the say the first 3, I bet they do. One Dr. Who fan had the bright idea of getting magnets and stickers made up that say “Bad Wolf” and plastering them everywhere or at least get all fans to put one on their car. I might pass that idea onto some people I know at SciFi.

I got my Brian Froud sketchbook book and had a chance to sit down and really look through it. I am so glad that I got it. It is a nice overview of his work. No commentary. It is like looking through someone’s sketchbook. I also found out that Wendy is doing her doll book on doll making. This makes me very happy and I hope my class was the one that finally convinced her to write it. Brian is working on the second Dark Crystal movie so that is a good thing too.

For Christmas Peter got me the deluxe “Dressing the Galaxy” which weighs about as much as a small galaxy. I have been going through it and may actually for the first time in my life make myself a walking around costume. There are some neat designs in there for background characters that I am intrigued by. Someday I have to make myself my Starfleet Admiral’s uniform since I was put into the books as such by Peter. My younger brother is an engineer on another ship. I know that there are some good books on making Star Fleet uniforms and I also know one of the nit-pickiest Star Trek Costumers on the planet.

I am grateful for all the fannish things in my life.

  1. The really cool part, of course, is that they’re putting it on Fridays at 9. Now I’ll just have to extend the DVR time an extra hour, to get both Dr Who and Battlestar Galactica… 🙂

  2. Joe Nazzaro says:

Bear in mind that the episodes will almost certainly be trimmed to fit the one-hour commercial-filled time slot, so the July DVDs will still be the way to go (the Canadian DVDs still come out in Feb as scheduled, so R1 disks will be out there for those who can’t wait), but I agree, it’s great that so many people will finally get to see the series. Wonder how Sci Fi will backtrack on their previous lack of interest now that they’ll be saying the new Who is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Here’s a funny coincidence that I only realized today. When I went to the BBC’s press launch for The Christmas Invasion back in January, I started chatting with a woman who turned out to be the assistant of executive producer Julie Gardner. When Julie came up a few minutes later, we started talking about how I’d only just arrived from the East Coast, and that she was heading out there in a couple of days, so I was able to tell her what the weather was going to be like and maybe what kind of clothes to pack. Turns out it now looks like she was going to New York for that final meeting with Sci Fi to put the finishing touches on the Doctor Who deal!
