FLOOD

Posted By on November 14, 2004

I agreed the night before to get up with the baby since she can be an early riser. At about 7:15 she made her wishes known that she wanted to get up. I brought her downstairs and placed her in her corral. I went into the kitchen to get the morning bottle for her. I heard what sounded like a hissing sound coming from the bathroom off the kitchen. I went in and water was spraying everywhere. The floor was rapidly flooding. I pulled various things out from next to the toilet and dove for the valve which was imbedded in the floor. The hose had separated from the tank. The valve was STUCK! My mind went blank as I couldn

A few years ago, my family was awaken in the middle of the night by the annoying buzz of the smoke detector. The four of us met each other in the hall, but none of us could smell any smoke. My father figured that the battery needed to be replaced, which would explain the buzzing at three in the morning. Mom went downstairs grumbling to disconnect the smoke detector above the hallway lamp, in an effort to get the buzzing to stop, when she let out a scream as if she was being attacked. The downstairs toilet was over-flowing and, due to the inch of water on the ground, had been over-flowing for quite some time. She immediately waded through the water to shut off the water supply to the toilet as my brother, father and I came barreling down the stairs.

Why was the smoke detector going off? The water had leaked through the kitchen floor and down into the basement. The water came in contact with the smoke detector, triggering the alarm.

It took over an hour and several beach towels to clean up the mess. As we were hanging towels over our deck and fence at four in the morning, Mom suddenly remember the shop vac in the garage which we could have used instead. Oops?

About four years ago, I came home from work to find the house flooded. Literally. I waded inside and followed the sound of the hissing water. Our water heater had ruptured. All the carpeting was ruined, several tiles came up. We had to repaint and… well, it wasn’t a lot of fun.

I’ve actually had to endure 2 floods in the last 6 months or so…one in the basement due to a broken washing machine…luckily nothing of value was down there and we picked up a “new” washer at the local Sears scratch-n-dent…the second just happened a couple of weeks back…my wife and I had a new toilet installed in our (2nd floor)master bathroom and apparently the plumber did a half-assed job…the tank became dislodged, water began leaking and when we turned off the valve it didnt stop the water…we went to work and came home to water cascading throught he ceiling in the family room…one call to home-owners insurance later and it appears we are covered on that – bleahgh
