Somebody come and play

In New York, the local PBS station is showing a 35-anniversary tribute to Sesame Street on Sunday night at 8 pm. I plan to watch it. I was in kindergarten when it started. My brother was just a year old. I had been a Mr. Rogers/Captain Kangaroo/ Kukla, Fran and Ollie fan so my parents thought that we might enjoy this new show. It was my introduction to the Muppets for which I will always be grateful. The
Yeah, I’ve never been a big Sesame Street fan. I was already around fifteen when I first started watching it. It was the only interesting thing on other than General Hospital or bad movies.
I have to confess that I liked Bert and Ernie and the Count. Other than that my favorite part of Sesame street was Maria. Man she was hot when she was young!
By the way, that was Kukla, Fran and Ollie.
3-2-1 Contact … man, does THAT take me back. I remember being absolutely addicted to the “Bloodhound Gang” serials at the end — in elementary school I was pretty seriously making sure I could be home to see it. (I think that was the age, anyway. Watch it turn out to be when I was 15 or something…)
I was born a year after Sesame Street started, and fell right into all the other shows Kath mentions — Electric Company (with Easy Reader!), Zoom, some of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, etc. Peaceful times.
(Of course, my parents swear blind that in 1974 I spoke up once at dinner and said, “I can’t wait until I’m grown up and can watch Watergate!” The hearings were pre-empting Sesame Street, y’see…)

And then there was the subtly subersive nature of “The Electric Company” – I mean, how else can you characterize a show that introduced so many children to the magic that is Tom Lehrer? (Sometimes it’s hard to believe the same man wrote “Silent E” and “Poisoning Pigeons In the Park”…)
🙂
I’m not sure it’s hard at all if you listen carefully to the lyrics of “Silent E” and “L-Y”. Now, reconciling them with “National Brotherhood Week”, THAT takes some serious effort. 🙂

Looks like the local Houston PBS (KUHT) station is also showing the Sesame Street show this evening, 7pm Central. I’m planning to watch.
The show helped to teach me to read, to love Muppets and how to figure out just which Muppets were hand operated and which were inhabited by people.

I also was, and still am, a tremendous Sesame Street fan. I very much appreciated it when they finally allowed characters other than Big Bird to see Mr. Snuffalupagus. I was beginning to develop a complex. More recently, I loved–LOVED–when Baby Bear got a baby sister. The day after the baby came home, he was all cross-eyed and sleep-deprived. It was grand!
My mother didn’t let me watch The Electric Company. That is, she’d run in and turn it off as soon as she noticed it was on, thus allowing me to see quite a bit. She felt it was too loud and that it caused me to behave in an extreme fashion. This, from the same woman who lets my kids watch Spongebob, CatDog and the Powerpuff Girls. Go….Figure….Gofigure….Yadadadada….
WHy all these things happen?
