20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Posted By on March 16, 2004

I remember the first time I saw this film on the Wonderful World of Disney. It made such a strong impression on me. I though Captain Nemo was the bees knees. It is in my top ten list of all time for favorite movies. Last year they had a special edition DVD of the movie with lots of really neat extras including a tour of the Nautilus and a photo gallery with some amazing photos. Something I always wanted from the time I was a kid was a model of the Nautilus. I thought it was one of the coolest looking ships ever. I still do. The Disney Catalogue had a beautiful limited edition resin sculpture of the Nautilus. I lusted over it. My loving husband got me one that now sits proudly in my studio. It lights up too. It is soooo cool. Next I have to find or build a squid to menace it……..

I personally loved the movie (and TV series)Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. The submarine they tooled about in was called The Seaview. I had a model of it as a kid and played with it in the tub and in the creeks near my house. Years later there was Seaquest DSV with a really cool submarine, but I’ve never seen a model of The Seaquest anywhere. Lately, at Toys’R’Us, I’ve seen a yard long plastic cutaway submarine which I’d love to get for my son. He’s 11. Ok, so it’d really be for me. I admit it. *** sigh ***

Disney’s Nautilus was definitely the version that I will forever associate with 20,000 Leagues, but I have to admit I also liked the design used in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen last year. The film may have had many shortcomings, but the Nautilus was not one of them.

Oooooooh yeah, thanks for reminding me about LXG’s Nautilus — really cool sub. There’s just something about Sean Connery & submarines that seem a natural fit. Lol. Call me a geek, but everytime I get ready to take a long trip, I say (in my best Connery imitation)”Today we sail into history.” He he.
