I have a little more energy this morning than I did yesterday so I am going to take that as a positive sign that the antibiotics are working. My brain also seems to be coming out of its foggy state and I can put two thoughts together without losing one of the them a couple of times first. Still not 100% but better. Thank you for all your kind wishes, prayers, good thoughts.<\/p>\n
Right now there are a number of articles making their way around fandom. One was published in the Wall Street Journal over this weekend entitled Rewriting the Rules of Fiction<\/i> about fanfic authors getting tapped to write for publishers. It is in the subscription side of the WSJ but enough people have pulled it out so you can probably find it on the web somewhere. The other article appeared Sunday (9\/18\/06) in Lexington (KY) Herald-Leader entitled What the Fic?<\/i> which is more a tongue in cheek look at the subject including those dreaded Mary Sues but over all is pretty even handed.<\/p>\n
This is such old news Kiddies. Publishers have found writers among fanficers since the Bronte sisters wrote what basically amount to fanfic about the Duke of Wellington. I know any number of fans that ran fan magazines, or fanzines as they are called, and are now well know editors in the field. I know plenty of authors who have come up through the ranks of fandom to become published by mainstream publishing. Fanficing is for some a good way to hone their craft. But lots of people stop at the fanfic stage and don’t go any further with their writings. Considering some of the fanfic out there I call that a blessing in disguise. There are also some fanfic writers who do well with the fanfic but can’t seem to get their own ideas and world building to work. They work well within an already defined structure. Those who are gems will shine and be found among the pebbles. The rest will fade into obscurity which considering some of it is for the best.<\/p>\n
