It is going to be a quiet holiday for us. Caroline\u2019s good friend Katie is in town for the weekend so they are going to play at each other\u2019s houses. Ariel has a babysitting job for the day. I am going to get us some burgers since we still have some hot dogs from last week and we\u2019ll grill them up for dinner.<\/p>\n
I wonder if NPR is going to do the usual reading of the Declaration of Independence which I look forward to hearing every year since it is on a weekend. It is a powerful piece to listen to. What was created from that one document is still going strong after 233 years and that is a wonderful thing.<\/p>\n
A lot of people had yesterday off. I watched them walk down our street to one of the ferry stops to get to Fire Island and the national park that is over there.<\/p>\n
We will have the traditional watching of 1776 today. And, strangely enough, parts are still relevant today considering what is going on in Albany right now<\/p>\n

\n[pause, then shouts]
\nJohn Hancock: WHAT IN HÊLL GOES ON IN NEW YORK?
\nLewis Morris: I’m sorry Mr. President, but the simple fact is that our legislature has never sent us explicit instructions on anything!
\nJohn Hancock: NEVER?
\n[slams fly swatter onto his desk]
\nJohn Hancock: That’s impossible!
\nLewis Morris: Mr. President, have you ever been present at a meeting of the New York legislature?
\n[Hancock shakes his head “No”]
\nLewis Morris: They speak very fast and very loud, and nobody listens to anybody else, with the result that nothing ever gets done.
\n[turns to the Congress as he returns to his seat]
\nLewis Morris: I beg the Congress’s pardon.
\nJohn Hancock: [grimly] My sympathies, Mr. Morris. <\/em><\/p>\n
