Give or take a few days that the album that changed a lot about music and how albums are put together came out. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band<\/I> was released in June of 1967 which means I probably have heard it since I was three. There are some things that have meaning through out one’s life and for me this album is one of them.<\/p>\n
As a kid I can remember getting my mother to put it on and I would dance round like a little loon. Funny thing is that 40 years later, it still makes kids dance around the room. This is one of the albums that Caroline loves to dance to. I had different dances to different songs and I worked very hard on each as I remember. I also loved just looking at the album jacket and the extras that came with the album. I would pour over the cover trying to identify the people in the group behind the Beatles. And I loved the outfits that they were wearing. I thought they were the coolest things ever<\/p>\n
“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is one of the first songs I remember trying to memorize the lyrics. The second was “Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite”. Since then I think I have most of the album memories just from the number of times I listened to it. When I was a kid I didn’t think much of “Fixing a Hole” but now I understand it so it makes so much more sense. “Within You Without You” scared me when I was little but I grew to love it as I got older and it became my favorite for a while.<\/p>\n
Even at the darkest times in my life, I could always put on this album and I would feel better and receive comforted from it. I have owned a copy of the audio-tape and the CD. My parents owned the vinyl copy that I almost wore out. They made sure that we learned at an early age how to take care of a record so there were no scratches or fingerprints on it so it probably still works with all its pops and clicks from the number of times it was played.<\/p>\n
So let us raise a glass to Sgt. Pepper and his magnificent band. May it play on forever.<\/p>\n
