No Strings Attached

There is a live action version of Battleship Yamato aka Starblazers that is showing in Japan. There is rumor that it might come to the US next year. I’d buy a ticket to it in a heartbeat. Starblazers is my early Anime. Also there is a CGI version of Harlock that there has been a teaser trailer to that I so want to see.

It was TBS I think before it was TBS and I was in high school. TBS starting showing Battle of the Planets/G-Force (Gatchaman), Star Blazers (Battleship Yamato), later that horrible mash-up of Queen of 1000 years and Captain Harlock (Captain Harlock and the Queen of 1000 years), and Robotech (which is a mish-mash of a couple of series). Those were my first shows. I liked the animation but loved the sweeping story lines which wasn’t really done in American cartoons which tended to be done in one.

Through conventions, Bill Ritch, and my college anime club I was introduced to Vampire Hunter D, Project Ako, Akira, Moblesuit Gundam, and My Youth in Arcadia among many other series. I found that I preferred the series with the convoluted storylines rather than the robot battles. I loved Vampire Hunter D and all the lovely artwork that came out of it. (Remember kids this is before the age of the Internet so finding things was difficult and expensive.)

Since then I have drifted in and out of anime. I have enjoyed Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, Witch Hunter Robin, and any Miyazaki had a hand in. Ariel grew up with Sailor Moon and Pokemon. Caroline enjoys those and Bakugan (which she learned to play in New Zealand), Sugar, and other anime that Ariel enjoys.

I am still on the look out for a copy of Arcadia of my youth: Endless Orbit SSX but no luck so far. I am also on the look out for things I might not have seen yet that people think are good.

So what do you like in animeland? Or even good US series (Symbiotic Titan rules!) with an anima twist?

We have a little but of a pause before the rest of the holiday season descends upon us. We are more than half way through Hannukah which we are set for. We have about three weeks before we have to travel again for the rest of the holiday season and the beginning of the next year. I have a lot to do today but I think I can get it done.

We do have some plans for the weekends. We are catching up with our friends Paul and Misty this next weekend which is always fun. Peter is doing a signing at 4th World Comics on Saturday starting at 11:00. We also plan, while we are in the city, to see Wintuk and the Rockerfeller Christmas Tree. It should be an adventurous weekend but nothing out of the ordinary for the week. We aren’t winding up for an event or a convention.

Still waiting to hear if I have a shot at a job I applied for. I would do so well at it but the market is very hard to convince that you are the ONE for that job. I am crossing my fingers but if I don’t hear anything before the New Year, I am figuring it went to someone else.

Football sucked because most of my picks lost so I am bummed. I have to stop using my heart in picking. I know that a lot of games came down to the last 2 minutes or the overtime or they were blowouts. The Bucs are probably feeling the worst out of the losing teams. They had it and gave it to the Falcons.

Caroline’s streak for snowflakes on her birthday remains intact. We had flurries about 10 pm last night. Not for long but it did snow on a day that had a 10% chance of any precipitation. As Peter said, My Daughter the Weather Elemental.

Off to get some stuff done for the day. Hope your day goes well.

I am grateful for a bit of a slow down to the rapid pace that is our lives.

Eight years ago my life changed forever. With the birth of my daughter I gained the title Mother. That day is a bit of a blur and considering what childbirth is, it is probably better that it is that way. I do remember waking up in the hospital at 3 am to hear another women deliver a baby boy into the world. Peter remembers that I had him read me the same maudlin story in the paper about six times about where the Rockefeller Tree had come from this year. I remember holding my daughter on my chest while Peter cut the cord. I remember that first night holding Caroline and just being amazed at how small she was and how perfect.

She had her birthday party yesterday at an indoor playground called Fun 4 All. Her cousins came along with some of her best friends and they had a blast. I had a very easy time of it because I didn’t have to do anything which was nice. I got to talk to friends and family and enjoy watching the kids run around to their hearts content.

This morning she awoke to her big gift of a dollhouse/castle sized for her Disney Princesses. She has been happily playing with it while wearing her new Unicorn PJs that her sister Gwen got her.

Today we are taking her to Friendly’s for lunch and maybe a movie. She is also going to visit with my parents to open the gifts they got her. Overall she is going to have a pretty spiffy day.

It just amazes me how much she has grown and matured in a year. Her grasp of math and spelling has grown in leaps and bounds. She is a voracious reader. But other things are the same. She is very loving. She draws all the time. She tells really complex stories while playing with her toys. There are parts of her personality that are her and will always be her while other parts change as she grows and experiences more things in her life.

So Happy Birthday to my baby girl. Mommy loves you very much.

I am grateful that Caroline is my daughter.

Today is Caroline’s Birthday Party. Tomorrow is her birthday but the party just worked better on Saturday with everyone’s schedule. This year we are letting someone else take care of the party. There is a large indoor playground on the North Shore that she loves so we are having the party there. The kids get to play and I just get to sit back and watch the fun (and take pictures). Also no clean up afterwards which is a wonderful thing.

She is very excited about it. She got early this morning and wanted to get ready immediately. I managed to get her to calm down and explained that her party was this afternoon. So she is bubbling within now with a grin on her face.

Hard to believe that eight years ago it was my last day before maternity leave kicked in. I wrapped up a whole bunch of projects at Del Rey and took the train home. On the train I was very uncomfortable but there is really no way for a pregnant lady to be really comfortable on the LIRR, the seats are against it. I remember thinking that I was glad that this was my last ride for a while.

It was tonight eight years ago that my OBGYN informed me that my daughter was coming into the world either today or tomorrow. Which was a surprise to all of us. The uncomfortable feeling I had been having all day were labor pains.

A lot has happened between then and now. My daughter sits across from me reading a book on my iPad. We have one less and one more cat than we had then. We have had many adventures together. I still am amazed that such a lovely little girl is my daughter.

I am grateful that eight years ago that was my last train ride for a while.

Adventures come in all forms and from all directions in my life. Yesterday was one of those that I will long remember. A couple of months ago I wrote about the Epic Mickey game and the Apps for the iPhone and the iPad and how Peter contributed to them. Because he is the digicomic author, he was invited to the launch of the game at the Time Square Disney Store from 7:00am to 10:00am on November 30th, which was the roll-out date for the game. He brought Caroline and me along with him for the festivities. The rest of the tale along with pictures are under the cut
