Stepping Back into Old Theater Habits

Posted By on September 14, 2012

For the next two months my weekends are booked. That’s a pretty long stretch in my current life. Not as long as some of the stints I did without weekends off and only, really, one day off a week to catch up on the rest of the week. But that’s theater and you know going in that it is not a 9 to 5 job that occurs 5 days a week. I remember that when I got the editorial job at Del Rey, it was the first time I had a job that didn’t include weekends since I graduated from college and worked in collection management at my college library. I occasionally did have a weekend off but it took a lot of planning on my part to get it and I was usually off to a convention that weekend.

Planning for things are a little more complicated because I have to take out the days that we are doing stuff. Caroline also has various days off the next three months for high holy days, elections, and district meetings which add and subtract things from a day.

Either way I have to plan carefully for what I can get done in the spots that we aren’t traveling or whatever.

This weekend we are going to celebrate my in-laws 60th wedding anniversary. This will be the first time we have had all the girls in the same place at the same time since Ariel’s Bat Mitzvah. It isn’t that we haven’t seen them, we just haven’t had them all together. Should be fun.

I am grateful for celebrations and adventures to come.

RTBTCKI The Fall is in the Air Edition

Posted By on September 13, 2012

But by tomorrow we are back to the end of summer.

I am not really a summer person. I do better when cold than when hot. The parents at the bus make bets at how cold it has to get before I put on a light jacket. So when we get this light fall touch in the air, I feel like I am rejuvenated.

Today for me is a cleaning and reorganization day. Things that were gotten out for Dragon*Con and the Ren Faire must go back where they came from. I also got to check the puppets for damage before they go back into storage. Ariel had college book delivered to the house which we are going to get to her this weekend so I have to make sure I have all those. Also stuff needs to go out to other people and I need to finish two dolls (about 3 months overdue).

Fig is officially 2 years old based on what the vet figures as her age when we found her. I cheat it a few towards when we found her so she is definitely 2 by this point. It is amazing how much Caroline and Fig have bonded. Fig is Caroline’s cat. Fig comes down when I go to the bus stop to pick up Caroline and waits for her in the middle of the living room. Fig gets her head scritched and purrs and then goes off about the rest of her day. Fig still makes that strange burble that she has made since we found her. I have never heard another cat make that noise.

The older cats are getting older. Stalin and Treat are about 17 and Millie and Vanilli are about 14. They are slowing down a bit but they are our cats and we love them.

NFL Football has started. I’ll start watching in a couple of weeks since I am rather busy for the next couple.

Somewhere in there I need to get the Halloween Decorations out and up. Waiting for the end of September which is arriving faster than I thought possible.

Tonight I am registering Caroline for a new Girl Scout troop. There is no Junior Troop at her school so she is going into a group that was created for the kids in the area to have their own troop. She is looking forward to her first meeting a lot and wants to be able to wear her uniform to school. I am glad that we have another generation that wants to be part of Girl Scouts.

Does anyone know a good place to start a website? I want to make a website to sell my puppets, dolls, and costumes. I think I missed the opening at Etsy to put stuff up there but maybe not. Ebay rules are more convoluted than the tax law in America. I also wonder if anyone has either tips or the like on how to promote such business ventures. I am a little clueless in this but want to succeed. I have puppets that I am willing to part with and would be interested in creating puppets for others.

Ah there is the coffee rush in my veins. Off to organize my home and my life. Wish me luck.

I am grateful for learning curves.

Convention(al) Wisdom: Volunteering Part 1

Posted By on September 12, 2012

I got back last week from Dragon*Con which is one of the larger convention in the United States. Dragon*Con depends on volunteers to help run the convention. There are rules to getting onto staff for the convention including a first time fee to weed out those who are just trying to get a free pass for the weekend. If you get a volunteer badge at Dragon*Con, then expect to work for that badge or expect to be informed that you will not be needed next year.

I have done a lot of jobs at various conventions. I started by volunteering as staff and they would put me where they needed me. I stood in front of the Art Show and various panel rooms and checked badges. I have helped out convention guests by being their handler and allow them to be nice because I was willing to be the bad guy. I have been on more tech crews that I can remember. Eventually I was asked to be the director of tech ops for Dragon*Con which I was until I found a replacement in Bill Harrison which worked to everyone’s advantage.

Volunteering means that you might not to get to see all of the convention, but you will see a chunk of it from whatever you are doing. I always took pride in helping others at the convention. For some strange reason to this day I get asked where things are and how to get to them. Guess I have that kind of face that looks like it knows what is going on.

But I have had some very unique experiences because I volunteered. I have met people and become friend with people that I would not have otherwise. I have learned about things that I wouldn’t have known about if I hadn’t volunteered. I met Dr. Timothy Leary because of volunteering at a convention and had a really interesting conversation with him about academia that I am not going to forget.

It is not all sweetness and light. The hours can really stink. One is still paying for one’s hotel room even if they aren’t in it much. It can be frustrating when one can’t get away for the one panel they want to see the whole convention.

But I always walked away happy that I had done so.

So questions about conventions in general or volunteering in specific, feel free to ask.

I am grateful for each convention experience I had while volunteering.

9-11 Harder this year than Last year

Now I am 49

Posted By on September 10, 2012

And honestly it doesn’t feel much different from 39 (except I am not pregnant) or 29 (except I am not loading out a show) but it does feel different than 19 (although I felt pretty mature then, boy did I have a lot to learn). Except my natal day, I really don’t think about my age and tend to forget how old I am most of the rest of the year unless made to think about it.

Yesterday we went to the Renaissance Festival in Sterling Forest, New York. We have been going, time permitting, for over 15 years. Caroline is now wearing the dress that Ariel wore when Ariel was around her age or a little younger. The investment on that dress has been a good one. It has survived both Ren Faires and conventions over the years.

Caroline brought her BFF R with her and the two of them spent the day calling each other Lady C and Lady R and calling me Patsy. Why Patsy? Well about 8 years ago I made Peter a King Arthur tunic ala Monty Python and created a cardboard version of the crown. The first tunic didn’t turn out quite right so I turn it into a Pasty outfit. There are pictures of Peter, Caroline and me online from that outing. This past year my brother Sean, blacksmith extraordinaire, created a metal version of the helmet that fit Peter’s head perfectly. So we pulled out the outfits, did a little fixing here and there and went back to the Ren Faire as King Arthur and Patsy. We amused the crew that runs the faire and the visitors to the faire. I had a lot of pictures taken with a slightly bedraggled look on my face holding the coconuts. It was the coconuts that took it over the top.

So lots of fun was had. We got back early evening and went to my favorite seafood place in the area and had a nice dinner.

I got some lovely gifts including the new book by Brian and Wendy Froud entitled Trolls and it is a spiffy book with all kinds of things to read and look at. It was put together quite nicely. I also got Flashback which is a retrospective from ELO with re-mastered tracks and a lovely book about the band itself. It is billed as the story of a Rock and Roll band and the pop genius who dared to go for Baroque. Which pretty much sums up the Electric Light Orchestra. Those who have known me the longest know what ELO means to me. Caroline likes them too.

I did read last year’s letter and wrote this year’s letter. Here is the edited version of the letter for this year.

Dear Me,

This is the only time that you and your siblings are in the same decade. Next year you start the 50s and wait for them to catch up. So you have a year to find your letter to yourself that you wrote when you turned 40.

I have been thinking a lot about the past 10 years and what has changed in our lives. Biggest has to be Caroline who is turning 10 this year. Don’t anything can really top that. We have had our up and downs over the years. Things going really right and things going horribly wrong. But you are still standing which is a good thing indeed.

This past year has been interesting sometimes in the Chinese proverb/curse “may you live in interesting times” and some in just pretty interesting. Some of which you can talk about but a bunch this year that you have to hold close to the vest. I think you can take some pride in the fact that people trust you enough to talk to you about some pretty interesting stuff and know that you won’t talk about it. Makes the Internet rather frustrating because you have information that would correct misinformation but it was told in confidence.

Ok 5 goals for your last year in your 40s

And honestly it is variations on what you have been telling yourself to do for years so lets see what we can get together before we do this for another decade passes.

1) Take care of yourself. Do what you can so in 10 years you can still do what you are doing now. Kung Fu is a good start to it but you know that you need to get back to the gym more in a pattern and practice your forms at home. Sifu can tell if you have been working on something or not. Give yourself some time to just breath. I can’t tell you the number of times I have found myself holding my breath or breathing shallowly. Not good for the brain. I do need some down time without guilt about everything I am trying to get done.

2) You sold a number of puppets in the past year. Let’s see if this year you can finally get that website going so you can sell more of them. Dolls too. There is a market for your artwork, find it and let it find you.

3) Get things done in a timely fashion. I know that is going again over 40 years of panic work but lets see if you can take the time you need to get things done the way that you want to rather than what you have to because you ran out of time.

4) Write! You have opportunities and avenues that most people who write would love to have so use them and get your work out there. You know how to do it so just do it.

5) Teach Caroline some of your artisan skills. Remember that you had a chance to learn some pretty cool stuff from your mother and grandmother and you passed. By the time you were interested, your grandmother couldn’t show you what she wanted to show you when you were younger because her fingers wouldn’t move that way anymore. You were fortunate that you figure it out so that your Mom could give you skills that you use to this day.

Over all I think we are doing pretty well. You know what you need to do to make the next step(s) so get moving.

Hug Caroline for me.

Love,
Kath
