And everyone was running all around the town.
Hard to believe that we are a week away from one holiday and two weeks from the last day of the year.
Fig is looking at me with that puzzle look that makes me believe she is an alien in a cat suit. She sometimes is the strangest cat.
The NFL is heading into the last two weeks of the season with what I call the numbers can make you feel better section of our program. The Wildcard race/fight is off and running. Some teams are out in the cold but there are some that are just peeking in and IF (insert a whole bunch of win/loss stuff ) then maybe their team might make it in. Right now the Giants have their fate in their hands. The Jets have to have a bunch of stuff to happen to even make it in. The Bears are in the same boat as the Jets.
I enjoyed the Hobbit a lot. Yes, they really played really fast and loose with the book. They added stuff from passing comments and other books. And there was a lot more fighting. Technically they got 6 chapters into the Hobbit. It was nice seeing characters again and Martin Freeman was wonderful as the younger Bilbo Baggins. I liked the Dwarves and the visuals. The extra frames may have made it sharper but I am not sure if it is better. My eyes don’t handle 3-D well. After a while my eyeballs compensate for the 3-D and the effect goes away and it flattens out. It is definitely worth seeing on the Big Screen.
This week is getting ready for the next two weeks and the rest of 2013.
I am grateful for films that feel like visiting old friends and picking up where you left off.

I haven’t bothered to learn the murder’s name because I don’t care about him. I care about the victims and who they were.

I am grateful to the adults who showed such courage to try to save the children and did manage to save some of them.

My prayers and sympathies to everyone affected by this senseless tragedy. And it is senseless because we are never going to make sense of what happened. We will find reasons down the line but there will never be any sense to it.
Caroline’s school recently got cameras and magnetic locks on all the doors so you can push a bar to get out but the door will not open from the outside without a button being pushed. We have had a door monitor for years. I have become good friends with several of them. The reason for the extra security? There was a pharmacy that opened up really near the school. There was a concern that what if someone robbed the drug store and then ran into the school for hostages and I hate to say that such concerns aren’t out of place.
The school where the shooting happened had all those security measures. He was buzzed in because he was recognized as the son of an employee and the assumption was that he was there to see his mother. I have a feeling that IDs and where people are going is going to be tightened down again.
I gave Caroline such a hug when she came home from school. She squirmed a bit because I was hugging her so hard but she hugged me back before going to play with her toys. Tonight she is going to have her first sleep over with one of her school friends. They have a movie night and play date all planned out.
I feel sadness in my chest wondering how many of those children had play dates with their friends for this weekend. How many activities aren’t happening now? How many unwrapped presents there will be this holiday season?
As a parent, what happened yesterday is one of the worst fears that one can have. You send your children to school and except that they will be safe there and taken care of. This is the place you entrust your children to. Now we have to explain to our children what happened and why. I have to say the best thing I have read on the topic was from the Fred Rogers Foundation which can be found here . It gives parents clear ways to talk to their kids about what happened and how to approach it. And listening to Mr. Rogers made me feel a little better.
I am so very grateful that I could hug my daughter tightly yesterday.

Currently I have Crafty Tuesday which I haven’t been too bad about this year and plan to be better next year. On Wednesday about once a month I did Con(ventional) Wisdom talking about the various conventions I have been to and giving tips to those who are on the fence about attending. I could have been better about that one and organized it and again plan to have it better next year. I am thinking of turning Friday into Puppet Day where I talk about all things puppetry. If I do, I will be starting that in January and doing different things with it. I am leaving the rest of the week open and I know readership drops on the weekend. This is all dependent on what else is going on around me.
Update on Treat: Well it is cancer but a slow growing form that can be stopped by removing the entirety of the lump, which we have done. So currently we are keeping an eye on him and any lumps that might appear. Treat is healing and gone back to the grumpy puss that we all know and love.
Ariel is coming home today. I am picking her up from the ferry. It will be nice to have her home for a while. Almost a month exactly. We have a lot to do within that month.
Right now we are in a short pause before the next holiday. I have about a week before travel starts and continues into the next year. Think about that. We have 17 days left of 2012. I guess I will be looking back at what I did this year soon. Hard to believe. Of course I am still having trouble wrapping my brain around Caroline turning 10.
All the cats are in a cat-pile in the other couch. Considering we were having kitty politics earlier this morning, it is nice to know that they sorted it out and now are all warm and friendly.
I should get on with my day.
I am grateful that even with Kitty Politics, our cats get along with each other.

It is cold outside but then it is December. The Cats are draping themselves over the heating vents to suck up the heat. The spot most fought over is one place on the back of the long couch where a cat can get both the heating vent and a sunbeam in the morning. Fig has won the challenge that this point and seems very happy. Stalin is sitting at my hip curled up and asleep. The two greys are a cat lump with each other. Treat is doing fine and recovering his appetite.
Indoor activities are the name of the games right now. I have a couple of things I want to get done before Ariel gets home tomorrow for her winter break. Hard to believe that next Friday is the beginning of Caroline’s winter break and that a week from Tuesday is Christmas.
The 121212 concert rocked and rolled. I heard songs that I hadn’t heard in ages. Made me want to pull out some albums and reacquaint myself with the music of my youth. It was nice to see that the older rockers could still bring the goods. I did find it interesting that even the younger rockers were not the current crop but one generation before. They knew who had the money and would pony up for a ticket.
I am grateful that I saw that concert.
