Happy Groundhog Day or Monday Morning Quarterbacking

Posted By on February 2, 2015

Or the weather outside is frightful.

We have rain on top of snow that is suppose to turn back to snow later in the day when the temperatures change again. A rather dismal looking day.

Caroline’s school is on a two hour delay although she got up at her regular time.

We watched the game and Peter did a live blog of the commercials. There were a number that had me laughing very hard and a couple that had me crying and a number had me scratching my head.

I fricking loved the halftime show but then I am a sucker for very large puppets and that was one heck of a puppet at the beginning. Also that half time show is the reason there is a dearth of anton fleece on the market right now. But I did enjoy it as did Caroline.

The game itself was interesting and competitive. I like it better when it is not a blowout for one team or the other. And we do have our ref controversy about roughing the kicker but that was about it. And how nice was it that most of the big plays were made by players who had been scrapped but found their way back to the NFL.

I have no idea if I am bowling tonight or not. It is going to depend on the weather and whether I can get to the bowling alley.

Now I have to check the basement and pray for dryness.

I am grateful for memory.

More Snow? No Thank You

This morning I awoke several times listening to the wind slam into the house and the house rattle at the impact. I am more concerned about losing power today than I was when the blizzard was on top of us.

Then I look at the weather forecast only to find the possibility of 5 to 8 more inches on top of the snow that is already covering the landscape. It doesn’t seem like much but on top of everything that is frozen out there, it will be a problem.

Superbowl is tomorrow. I have the healthy snacks in place along with one or two of the old favorites. I can remember watching football with my dad munching on potato chips with onion dip. I am going to say the Seahawks are going to repeat and it is going to be close and there will be three calls by the officials that are going to be discussed ad infinitum.

Peter has a new book out this week entitled The Avengers Vault. It is pretty slick with all kinds of pullouts and fun info.

I would like, for those of you who have a say, to consider his novel Artful for the Hugo award along with anything else it is eligible for.

It is -9 F right now with the wind chill factor.

Caroline is pretty much recovered from the flu. She still has a sniffy nose but we are trying to figure out if it is from the flu or from her allergies which can kick up at this time of year. She did take Tamiflu and it did cut the time she was miserable.

I am grateful for medicines that make Caroline feel better.

Snow Far Snow Good

It is snowing again. The forecast is for less than an inch but honestly I could use nothing at this point since I need to go out today back into the real world. I need to restock my French toast kit.

Caroline bundled up against the cold and the wind. Her snow boots keep her feet warm and toasty and she changes into her shoes at school. She has been a trooper through all this between the flu and the snow. She caught up on all her homework during the two days she was stuck at home due to the snow. Today she has a flute lesson after school so she is prepared for that.

Anything that falls this morning is going to stick because it was only above freezing for about an hour yesterday without the windchill factor.

Off to do things that need to be done.

I am grateful for short snow fall so there is less to shovel.

A Few Things that have been bothering me

I have worked in the entertainment industry most of my adult life in various jobs.

While in the theater, a friend and I had a phrase gay until proven straight. It worked quite well for us and we didn’t really worry about the sexual orientation of anyone we were working with because it didn’t matter if they could do the job and, frankly, it was none of our business.

Yesterday Joel Grey informed the world that he was a gay man. I think it is more impressive that at 82 he is still a fine actor who can learn and retain his lines but that’s me. Yes he has children. Yes he was married. But you have to consider (remember 82) the world he grew up in and the social morays of the time. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t love his wife or his children.

He is not the only person that I know who has come out late in life. I have a number of gay friends in their 60s and 70s who were married and had children. It was what you were supposed to do at the time. Now they are much more comfortable with coming out and being themselves without having to hide parts of them that they were afraid they would be condemned for. More often than not the spouse has been supportive.

I am honestly waiting for a time were who we are attracted to is not a big deal. I am also waiting for women to be paid the same as men and women to be allowed to train for the jobs they would like to do along with the character of a person being more important than the color of the skin. I know I will be waiting for a while on all this but with each generation these things are less of a problem until they aren’t an obstacle at all.

Dear NFL, stop making Marshawn Lynch do things that he is serious uncomfortable with. It isn’t funny and is quickly getting to the sad part of the spectrum. He doesn’t want to participate in media day. The right to free speech does include the right to not talk. Maybe he had a social anxiety. Maybe he feels that no matter what he says, it will be taken the wrong way. But forcing the man by taking away chunks of his paycheck is really rude. Also so he wore a hat with a logo that was not vetted by the NFL. Was it an obscene hat? No. It had his logo on it for whatever beast mode is. There is apparently a clothing line that goes with it. The NFL needs a reality check about these bullying tactics they use against the players. But since they are a privately held company, they won’t be.

Dear local government, believe it or not the people who live in the side streets and cul-de-sacs need to be able to drive safely too. I know I am one of the lucky ones that are on a street deemed important to the town’s transportation grid so we are some of the first to get plowed. The fact that it took you over 24 hours to get to a little more than half the sideroads is not great. Y’all put reminders in our mail boxes of what fines were in effect if we didn’t take care of our property within 24 hours of the end of the storm, which most of us did. I am going to be interested to see if you go after those who didn’t. Also some of your rent a plow operators were scraping up the streets again when there really wasn’t anything to plow. We needed salt and sand not more grooves and places for potholes to form.

There, I honestly feel better. Now on with the rest of my day.

I am grateful that we can get our car out of the driveway if we need to.

Juno got us in the teeth

Apparently this storm was gunning for the eastern part of Long Island and we were on the heavy snow side of the break from a little snow to a lot of snow.

Estimates out here are about 20 inches but it is very hard to measure because of the wind. Right now my car is pretty much clear but has 2 to 3 foot drifts around it depending on the side of the car. The steps aren’t steps right now and I can’t get out my basement door due to the snowdrift up against it.

The wind chill is putting us down in the single digits and it is continuing to snow.

Personally I plan to not do anything until the snow is over since the wind seems to just be blowing the snow right back into any cleared area. They plow the street but about 15 minutes later, most of the snow is right back on the street. The side streets are not plowed at all.

Suffolk country is still under a travel ban and so far, except for plows, I haven’t seen anyone idiotic enough to drive through although I am expecting that will not hold much longer.

And it is the kind of snow that you can’t build a snowman in. That loose powdery non-packing snow which get everywhere.

I think we will be digging out for the next day or so. I am honestly expecting that the earliest that Caroline will be back in school will be Thursday and there is a possibility that it won’t be until next Monday.

Right now we have power and Internet and we know full well that can change in pretty much an instant.

I am grateful that I can post this entry.
