No Strings Attached

There is not much I can say about the last episode of this season without giving away a lot of what happens.

I can say that the acting was first rate. There was one set that made me smile especially the detail that went into it. The writing was good but some of this episode was hard to follow even after we saw the ending. Knowing the ending and watching the last half again, Caroline had fallen asleep the first time, really showed some of the quickly patched holes in the story.

It is a good ending and sets up possibilities. It also confirms some people’s fan fiction but I am sure that they don’t read fan fic at BBC Wales because it is pretty much forbidden by the NDA that everyone signs for this sort of thing.

I was very happy about this season over all. Lots of clever episodes and a through line that was not pounded on in the episodes but came out of the episodes.

And can we have Missy back soon? Please?

OK folks, hang onto to your hats. Are you sitting down? Sure?

So be sure to wish her a happy birthday.

Dear Caroline,

Thirteen? Wow, where did the time go.

I am not joking when I say it seems that I just brought you home from the hospital. I blinked and you went from baby to toddler. I blinked again and you went from toddler to preschooler. Blink and you are going to elementary school. Apparently I blinked again and now you are in middle school and official a teenager.

You are a lovely clever young lady with a big heart. You care about the world around you and the people and animals in it.

You do well in school. I don’t have to be on top of you to do your homework. Maybe an occasional nudge but you are pretty much a self started. You get up and get yourself ready for school including making your own lunch. You make sure you have everything you need for the day and get yourself out the door in plenty of time.

Your sense of humor tends to the political arena. I think one of your favorite sketches on Colbert is the Hungry for Power Games. You are very aware of what is going on not only in your life but what is going on in the world. You are concerned about civil right and equality. You get rather irate when you see what you think is injustice in the world. You have big plans on how you want to change the world.

You love to read but prefer paper to digital. You read all kinds of things from comics to books both fiction and non-fiction to the newspaper. You have started reading the New York Times daily and then looking for more information about topics you find interesting.

It had been fascinating watching you come into your own as a person.

I look forward to your teenage years and all that follows.

You are off to a great start.

Today you have a robotics scrimmage and tomorrow is your Harry Potter Birthday Party and a Girl Scout meeting. I hope you have fun.

This is a bottle episode but it is probably one the cleverest bottle episodes in the history of Doctor Who.

The Doctor has lost just about everything that is important to him. Why not take it a step further and lose himself in the process?

The fact that Peter Capaldi is NOT going to be nominated for an Emmy for this performance is beyond a crying shame. I knew he was a good actor but I didn’t know until this episode how splendidly good he was. Wow.

The writing helped a lot. This was Moffat on his game and bringing that wonder that only he can bring to the table. This is the sort of writing that he excels at and it sang in this episode. Not a word wasted. Not an image out of place.

And kudos to Rachel Talany, it looked beautiful. I did a count of the sets and the redressing of the sets. They didn’t give her much to work with but she used every inch of what she had.

I was very impressed with it all. My few niggling concerns are behind the cut because they do spoil certain things that I loved finding out during the show.

Capaldi did go up the favorite Doctor Ladder a rung or so.

I am grateful for all the love and care along with blood, sweat, and tears that went into this episode.

There have been years that I have spent a week on this one topic. There have been years that I don’t post anything. And there are years, like this one, that I post on the day of Thanksgiving.

First of all I am so very thankful for my family both blood and extended. They have been in my corner unconditionally this year. Special very thank you to my parents for coming to the rescue in a pretty dire situation.

I am thankful for all my friends. I have a lot of friends and there was a time that I didn’t think I had any but now I know better. I don’t get to see all of you as much as I would like and some of you I have only gotten to know because of this wondrous World Wide Web. So thanks for being here. I did get to meet a number of people that I had only known through the Internet this year which was really neat.

I am thankful for the adventures I have had this year. Done some pretty cool things and met some interesting folks because of it. Made some new friends too.

A number of these things happened because I make puppets. I am thankful I have the ability to build puppets that amuse others. I am realizing that I am pretty good at it. I discovered that I am able to build things that I thought I could not build. I learned a few skills along the way as well.

I am thankful for everything that has entertained me this year which is a really long list.

I am thankful that Peter is still around. Yes, the stroke was three years ago but I am still happy and grateful that he has recovered considering all the things that could have happened and didn’t. He’s lucky to be alive and intact and we are lucky to have him.

I am thankful to the fans. What a writer does can be in a vacuum as they do it. They get feedback after they are all done. I like hearing fans tell Peter that they appreciate his writing or a personal story about how his writing has helped them. I appreciate the fans that take time to talk to me or tell me about how Peter has made their world a little better through his work.

I am thankful for Caroline who is turning 13 in less than two weeks. She is growing up to be such a strong and caring person who has strong opinions on a lot of topics, which she has researched to get more information for intelligent conversation.

I am thankful for our pets. Millie is still chugging along although he is slowing down. Fig is Caroline’s cat above all others. Inky is the Chaos Cat but is very loving on her terms. They are there for us and we for them.

Today we celebrate with family and friends and I am thankful for that.

I am grateful that I have so much to be thankful for.

This one was well written, well acted, and I had to grab tissues by the end.

There isn’t much I can say without spoiling it.

Acting was splendid. The story was mostly set up for the ending because we are heading to the last couple of episodes. It was nice to see another character show up.

I really hope Sarah Dollard gets to write more Doctor Who, she has the knack for it.

We knew Clara was going to go out sometime this season and this was probably one of the best exits for a companion ever.

Jenna Coleman did a splendid job especially with the last speech to the Doctor where she makes him promise not to take revenge for what was going to happen.

And it was really Clara’s fault that she died. If she hadn’t tried to be the Doctor, she would not have found herself in that situation.

The one thing that didn’t quite ring true was at the beginning when she is hanging out of the TARDIS and laughs at nearly dying but it makes more sense when I realized that she believed that she was invulnerable and didn’t have to worry about gravity until gravity caught up with her or rather she figured that the Doctor who save her.

And let’s give some props to Calpaldi who had to use body language to inform the audience how the Doctor felt about events around him. I watched it a second time just to watch him.

It was nice that Maisie Williams showed up again as Ashlidr showing how an eternity can weight very heavy on the soul. I also like that the re-established that she read her diaries to remind herself of what she had done in her long life. So she knew Clara but only by what Ashlidr had written about her, which was through the lens of time.

So next week the Doctor deals with things that go bump in his head.

I am grateful for all the entertainment Jenna Coleman has given me as Clara Oswald.
