Pain in my ….

Posted By on April 4, 2016

The drive to Knoxville caused my right shoulder to be very painful. The drive back didn’t help that. I thought I had it back in working order before doing my full weight routine on Saturday. Not so much and Sunday night was miserable. This morning it is more of a dull pain reminding me that it is there unless I move it a certain direction and then it is painful. Bowling is either going to be fascinating or impossible this evening.

I have learned over the years how to work around injury. I use to work through it but that only seem to make the injury worse over time. Now with various parts of my body with various injuries and aliments, I make efforts towards the goal that I can move the next day.

I think if I could go back and tell my younger self one thing it would be to take care of my body better. Don’t assume that if your body can do something it should. And be nice to your knees, since you are going to need them later. Oh and protect yourself when playing to chemicals that will cause long term damage again not immortal.

Today has a number of things on the list. I think I will start with the kitchen and then work my way to the next thing and see how far I can get before lunch. I do need to do some writing today of the fictional kind. It can be a balancing act some days. Especially when I have to baby a part of my body that is not happy with me.

An anti-inflammatory is a must at this point. I avoid taking anything until I am at a point that I have to take something to function. Drugs and me have a strange history of working too well to, as I use it, not working well at all so I use them sparingly.

I don’t think the wet and cold outside is helping either. Not snow but rain however it is the cold rain that seeps into your bones and doesn’t let go.

Right now the cats are curled up with each other asleep. I think they have the right idea.

I am grateful for things that reduce the pains that my body has.

You don’t study fandom, fandom studies you

We read an article in Variety talking about how fandom has come to shape things in Entertainment. It was by an anthropologist who works in the entertainment industry about the power of fans especially with the advent of the concept of social media. You can read the article here if you care to.

They are talking about doing a year long study into fandom and Caroline said, “You don’t study the Fandom, the Fandom studies you.” Which is probably true considering how fans can take the littlest thing like a comment off the cuff or a photo that was taken during a shoot and analyze the heck out of it to the point of absurdity.

Dr. Strange was filming in the Village (Greenwich Village for those outside of NYC) yesterday and a lot of photos have made it onto the Internet. For me that was a Yippie because I can finally make that Doctor Strange puppet I want to make along with a Baron Mordo puppet. For others it was their time to either trash or treasure the photos depending on which soap box they were currently shouting from. Personally I think it looks great and I am so looking forward to seeing this film.

X-Men Apocalypse has a new trailer and I am stoked to see this film as well. But before that, we have Captain America Civil War.

It’s a great time to be a fan.

Speaking of fans, baseball starts up today. Right now everyone is in the mix for winning it all.

And Basketball is winding down. Can the Golden State Warriors break the Bulls record? And who will win it all?

But currently I am enjoying the Doctor Strange pictures and waiting for Once Upon a Time to air this evening. Caroline is watching her way through Buffy. Peter is working on his next novel.

Fandom is good right now.

I am grateful for all the photos from the set of Doctor Strange.

April Showers

Posted By on April 2, 2016

Of course it started raining as of yesterday and doesn’t look like it will be stopping anytime soon except to possibly turn to snow for a bit and then back to rain.

We do need the sky water as we didn’t have that much snow this winter so the water table needs it.

The beginning of this month is the cold rain but by the end of the month we get the warmer rain so it is just wet rather than wet with bone chilling cold.

The damp does come into play with my joints so I recognize what is going on and deal with it the best I can. I think I knew this was coming a couple of days out or maybe that was the effect of the fever or both.

Caroline has a school activity today in the afternoon and we are planning the rest of the day around that. She did get all the courses she wanted for next year and will have four high school credits going into high school. I figure she is probably going to work towards have a couple of college credits before she goes to college too.

Today will probably be recovery from whatever was going on yesterday. If it was the flu, it was short lived. If it was the mega-cold again, it didn’t linger which is nice.

Onward and upward.

I am grateful that the crud only seem to last 24 hours.

I had PLANS Doggonit

I was going to go into the city this afternoon and go to a friend’s birthday party with another friend. Woke up at 5 with a fever of 101 and joint aches that were painful. Really hoping this is NOT the flu that is going around and kicking everyone’s kister.

So it is April 1st where everything said on the Internet is not to be believed. No there is not going to be a new Firefly on NetFlix. The Washington Post is making a list of the gags and pranks out on the Internet. So far my favorite is Esurance’s Election insurance.

I promised several days ago that this would be a prank free zone and it is. Anything I put here is the truth except on January 27th if I am celebrating Charles Dodgson’s Birthday with Rabbit Hole Day which is a fun day to write a piece of flash fiction. Or if I preface the entry with this is a work of fiction.

Gosh it is hard to think this morning.

I could have call this Random Things Before the Coffee Kicks In but I was half way through my first cup and I don’t think coffee is going to do it today.

I got a challenge on Tumblr to post 10 things about me you might not know so I thought I’d put it here and then link it on my Tumblr account.

1. I don’t like avocado. It’s not the taste but the texture that drives me up a tree and I don’t care what you put in it, I can still feel that weird texture and blech.

2. I like lifting free weights over machines. I feel I can do more with that. I know I have to be careful but I have a better mind/body connections with them. Can’t do squats anymore which stinks but I have found other things I can do that does not impact my knees.

3. I have written Doctor Who fanfiction and Doctor Who tie-in fiction. I have a short story in the Big Finish Anthology “Qualities of Leadership” entitled “On a Pedestal” about the 2nd Doctor, Jamie, Victoria, and William Wallace. I gave a copy to Frasier Hines. I still occasionally write fanfic, I have just hidden it really well on the Internet.

4. I went to see Pulp Fiction for the first time with Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. Also I am thanked in the Graphic Novel “The Tragical Comedy or the Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch”. Plus there is a page that is almost a direct quote from something I said to Neil.

5. I went to Brad and George Takei’s wedding. It was amazing and I met such a diverse and interesting group of people. George came to our wedding and ended up talking Peruvian politics with some childhood friends

6. I am double-jointed in both thumbs, which makes it rather difficult to play classical guitar, however this can put useful as a puppeteer strangely enough.

7. I have made life long friends through my puppets and met my husband who proposed to me through a puppet at the Adventurer’s Club on Disney Pleasure Island.

8. I have been on the set of two TARDIS console rooms. Back in the 80s I was on the Peter Davison’s edition and a couple of years ago on Capaldi’s. They were filming Warriors of the Deep back in the 80s and Robots of Sherwood the last time I was on the set.

9. I have an MFA from the Yale School of Drama.

10. I am working on two novels and two short stories right now. I have been writing more these days in the fiction category. One of the novels is a sequel to 20,000 leagues under the sea and goes from the premise what if not all of Nemo’s family died in the massacre he describes in the book but rather one child lived and was raised by someone who hated Nemo for reasons of their own.

I am grateful that I could come up with 10 things even though my head feels like it is full of cotton-wool.

Balance

Posted By on March 31, 2016

Balance is important. It is one of the reasons we don’t fall over every time we get up or walk. A lack of balance can be rather annoying.

There is a lot of talk on various websites and books about having balance in one’s life. A balance between work and leisure time. A balance between family and work. A balance within families. Balancing the books. Balancing one’s life.

Makes me feel like I am on a perpetual tightrope without the balance pole to help.

I have discovered over the years finding balance is not easy but it is necessary.

Too much either way and you fall or fail to maintain balance.

So life is a balancing act between what you need to do and what you want to do. Between that which must be done now and that which it would be a good idea to do it sometime soon and that which you will eventually get around to.

It is not an easy task and everyone does fall down at some point. The trick is to get back up on the rope and go again. I know when I am not feeling at my best and I know I have fallen off, it can be hard to get things going back to a center point. But I can recognize that and deal with it.

Yesterday was the first day since I got back home that I felt at all balanced. I am going to take that momentum and move myself forward from task to task keeping my balance going.

I am grateful for things that allow balance.
