Rest In Peace Chadwick Boseman

And a big FU to colon cancer.

This is what his family posted on his twitter page.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family said in the statement. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more — all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.”

The first time Mr. Boseman made an impression on me was in the film ‘42’ which was about Jackie Robinson and the breaking of the color barrier in baseball. It seems a little too on the nose that Mr. Boseman passed on Jackie Robinson memorial day in baseball.

After I saw him as Vontae Mack in “Draft Day,” I knew there was a new powerhouse actor in the room.

When it was announced that he would be playing T’Challa, I knew he was going to give a performance of a lifetime. They introduced the Black Panther in Captain America Civil War and he was wonderful. By the time we got to Black Panther, he had the role down cold.

All during the time he was portraying T’Challa, he was battling colon cancer. Makes his work and dedication of his art even more amazing.

Black Panther made him an Icon for many people. That film gave many marginalized people something they needed. It gave them a touchstone. It was the first Marvel film they felt was made for them.

I managed to score two tickets to the Marvel Friends and Family Screening of Black Panther on top of our usual seats. I decided to take my friends L & D since they are Marvel fans.

For D, the Black Panther was a touchstone from his comic reading. Here was a strong black superhero from an amazing land who was being treated as an equal by others in the Marvel Universe. This film was made for him on so many levels. He had tears in his eyes from happiness by the end of the film.

That was when I knew this film was going to transcend the Marvel Universe and become something that would become a worldwide phenomenon. It also launched Chadwick Boseman’s career to the next level. Not that he needed much help with that.

I know that he loved it when children would come up to him and cross their arms on the chest and said, “Wakanda Forever!” Mutual friends always said he was easy to work with and had a very sly sense of humor. He was dedicated to the role he was playing and put his heart and soul into it.

His is a life cut off way too soon. One wonders what role would have gotten him his Oscar.

My sympathies and prayers to his friends and family. Know that his work changed the world for the good and we will always be grateful for that.

I am grateful for Chadwick Boseman.
