Crafty Tuesday: Good Bye Radio Shack and a number of other materials that I used

Posted By on March 10, 2015

I have used Radio Shack for electronic parts for various projects all of my adult life.

Radio Shack was where I went and looked at the walls of parts to figure out how I was going to put something together.

I was extremely happy when they got EL wire in and battery packs to go with the wire.

Now I am at 6’s and 7’s about where to go for good electronic components at decent prices.

Ideas anyone? Companies that they like? Places they avoid?

One of the places I get my wigs isn’t selling them anymore. I could weft my own but there is only so much time in the day. So I need wigs that fit my puppets that are on the large side of doll wigs. I have been using Build a Bear wigs for some but they aren’t doing as many colors as they have been so I am back to square one.

So wig recommendations? Also looking for beards and mustaches as well.

I am looking for both black and grey fur with a little curl to it. I have a lovely piece of grey but it is too small for a puppet head and the last of a larger piece I bought about 5 years ago.

There was a time that I could get all the colors of the rainbow for the Phluzzies’ bodies. It was that furry fleece when it was cut it would get everywhere. Someone called it poodle fleece but that was not the name of it.

It’s on the three puppets seen here.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I did get the reformulated 3-M spray to work for me. Just not happy with the consistency and the time it takes to tack up.

It is amazing how you can get use to using a certain type of fabric and when it goes out of style/print, you are hard pressed to find a substitute.

Here’s to hoping that they don’t redo the cell foam I use for my skeletons.

I am grateful for new materials that do as well if not better than the old materials.

For electronics, that is going almost entirely online. For fun stuff, take a look at sparkfun.com for reasonable prices and good ideas. The professional shop at digikey and mouser, but they can be a bit intimidating for non-engineers…

I’ve bought a lot of electronics stuff from both the All Electronics Corp and from MCM Electronics. Both carry the same sort of components as RS, with decent prices.
