DragonCon 2011 Day 1

Posted By on September 3, 2011

In which the convention cranks it up to eleven and it is only Friday.

I started the day by putting my artwork in the Art Show. Peter helped me get everything over to the show and once I pulled everything out, I realized that I had left the bid sheets on the desk in the room. Peter was kind enough to go back and get them for me.

We went back to the Marriott meeting lots of people we have met through the years along the way. Did some quick catch-ups but not long conversations.

My first panel was on Classic books that are considered Young Adult Lit. We talked about books that we love and how the classification came into being. I explained some of the stuff on the publishing side of things. We had a teacher and a writer talk about it from their points of view. I learned quite a bit.

Went to Peter’s table to watch it while he did a panel. Had a number of folks come by and telling me how much they enjoy reading this blog. I really appreciate each and every one of you for doing so. Had a long conversation with a friend from grade school about the upcoming high school reunion and other things.

Now due to timing I had to get into my outfit for the evening a little earlier than I had planned. So I walked from the Marriott to the Hyatt and back looking like this with Lockheed’s eyes lit up.

(For the Visually Impaired. I am standing in the corner of a room looking at the Dragon on my arm. On my right arm is a purple dragon with a long tail that is wrapped around my arm. He had claws on his fingers and toes. His eyes are glowing slightly. I am wearing an X-Men First Class uniform which is in Blue and Yellow with a black harness with silver buckles.)

I am pleased to say that people figured out what character I was doing which was Kitty Pryde from the X-Men.

Next was the workmanship contest. Which was a bear to judge. It uses to be easy to call it from the costumes you saw as you entered the room but not anymore. Every year these people step up their game and give us better each time. It took us a little time to figure out who got what but we were all happy with our choices. We also go done in time which can be a feat at DragonCon.

Peter joined me at the contest and we had to fight our way to an elevator to get to our room. Peter called it a night and I went over to the Hyatt to see my brother, my sister and a number of friends. A good time was had by all. I got back a little later than I would have liked because we had a breakfast meeting this morning but I need the time to talk to people I see maybe once a year that I use to see at least once a week.

I am grateful that the contest went well.
