This Past Weekend (A Catch-up Post)

Posted By on May 18, 2011

Just FYI, the New Who Review went up yesterday afternoon for the Doctor’s Wife. Crafty Tuesday will be on Thursday this week.

This past weekend was a busy one filled with family and fun with a healthy dose of excitement some of which we could have done without.

The reason for all this was Caroline’s First Communion. She has been working towards this for the past two years in religious school very hard.

I am putting photos behind the cut. I don’t think anyone is still on dial-up but I don’t want to take over the screen.

The beginning of the week was getting the house Mother Clean. There is clean and there is clean because Mom is coming over to the house. So we super cleaned and spring cleaned at the same time. Peter was a big help getting things done as was Caroline. I also had to get Ariel’s room in good order for two reasons. The first was that my sister Sheila would be staying there for a couple of days. The second was that Ariel would be back from college on Monday.

Thursday on our way to bed we decided to use the auto-clean on the oven to clean the oven so we could have a nice oven for anything we needed it for. The oven had other ideas and we heard a “pumf” noise as the lights flickered. The oven was deader than a dodo. The stove top worked but we had also lost the clock on the stove. So it was possible to boil water if need. We made an executive decision to deal with it AFTER Saturday was done.

Friday saw the arrival of my parents and sister. We had a pleasant afternoon catching up on stuff. My mother and sister accompanied me to the bus stop to pick up Caroline who was overjoyed at seeing both of them but went to Sheila with the tackle hung. We had a nice dinner at a local seafood restaurant and lots of pleasant conversation. Sheila and I ran an errand to the local bookstore so she could pick out a bible for Caroline that would be on Caroline’s reading level.

Saturday was cloudy but the rain itself held off until after the ceremony. Our guests arrived through out the morning. At 1 pm Caroline had to be in the gym ready to line up.

The service itself was fine. The kids did great. We took lots of pictures of the kids in their finery and then went home.

We had a luncheon set out for everyone with something that everyone liked to eat. Things were going well when the fridge stopped working. We figure out that it was not only the fridge but a couple of other things on the circuit that had gone. So down I go to the basement to fight my way to the fuse box. Fuse box #1 is easy to get to but Fuse box #2 is a little more off the beaten path. I reset the breaker and it seemed to work for a while but then it would trip again. So we called a local electrician to see what the problem was. He showed up and found a couple of faulty breakers in the box that needed to be replaced because they were a fire hazard.

Meanwhile our guests ate and talked and had a good time. Caroline enjoyed being the center of attention. We caught up on stuff, told old stories and new jokes and just relaxed in each other’s company.

Other than our power problems, it went very well.

I am grateful that the weekend went so well.

(For the VI: Caroline is wearing the white dress I described last week. It is Ivory in color. She has on her veil on her head with her hair in lovely braids. She is seated in a black folding chair in the middle of a row of folding chairs. She is looking to her left at the other children swarming around off camera.)

Isn’t it odd how beloved people can have a lovely time while the hosts have to deal with defective breakers and minor possible disaster? Yet a good time was had by all. I would wager the icing on the cake was that the food in the freezer did not melt. That could have resulted in a very strange but entertaining meal later for the guests.

I am happy all ended up very well indeed. May Caroline have good use with her new bible.

Caroline looks lovely, and it sounds like she had a terrific time. Brava.

And in terms of fridge/freezer problems, I remember that right before our wedding, we had all the flowers at Lisa’s house in the basement (rarely-used) refrigerator. Naturally, they froze. Lisa’s aunt wound up doing emergency flower surgery that morning, as I recall…
