Who lives in a Pineapple Under the Sea?

If you immediately know the answer to that question, you have kids, are a kid a heart, or watch a lot of Nickelodeon for whatever reason. I found out about SpongeBob not through the kids but through a good friend. I watch an episode or two and figured out that I just didn’t quite get it. Then Caroline came along and they watched SpongeBob Squarepants at daycare from time to time and she really liked it. So I sat down and watched it with her at home and I have to say it grew on me. Once I had the characters down and the relationships worked out and stopped worrying why the crab was the father to a whale, it became even more surrealist fun.
So Caroline and I watch SpongeBob with the understanding that she does not imitate the laugh. She enjoys it and is now reading the titles of the episode herself for the most part. I freeze it so she can give it a go. She had questions for me that I couldn’t really answer because they were questions only SpongeBob would really know the answers to.
I got a call from Peter out in San Diego the other evening asking me if Caroline might like to talk to SpongeBob. I said that she would and Peter said he would see what he could do. Yesterday Peter wanted to know where we were at certain parts of the day while he arranged with SpongeBob a time to talk to Caroline. I gave him our itinerary including hitting up the J.C. Penny’s to see if we could get Ariel’s dorm room linens there since they were having a massive bedding sale. (We did score her a dorm room set at more than ½ off along with a couple of other things she really needed).
At about 7 pm our time, the phone rang. Peter said put Caroline on. Caroline got on the phone and said “hello?” She looked a little puzzled it wasn’t daddy and then the dime dropped, “SPONGEBOB! Oh SpongeBob I love you so much!” She then proceeded to ask him some questions including how Gary was at which point Gary interrupted SpongeBob and SpongeBob had to tell Gary that he was talking to Caroline. She had a very animated conversation with Mr. Squarepants, got all her questions answered, and was as happy as a clam after the call.
Peter had set up the phone call with Tom Kenny who voices both Mr. Squarepants and Gary since they were both at SDCC. And Caroline got a very special phone call that just made her day.
I am very grateful to Mr. Kenny for taking the time to talk to my little girl.
