Summer Vaction 2009 Day 21

There is a bill that past both houses of the New York Legislature making it a crime to text while driving. Personally I thought that was bleeding obvious. If talking can only be hands free then how can texting even be considered? There is an article in the New York Times today about driving while distracted. Apparently the hands-free doesn’t really help with the distractions while driving. When one talks on the phone even with not holding it to their ear, one is still distracted as the conversation takes over parts of the brain that are needed to process what is needed to drive safely. Hands-free does not equal safe by any stretch of the imagination. Think of it like fat-free doesn’t mean calorie free if you need a comparison. I would like to add putting on make-up while driving, especially mascara, and shaving while driving be added to the list. Wake up 15 to 20 minutes earlier and deal with these things at home.
Can you tell that I almost got taken out by a car running a red light while the driver was on his phone? And dealing with the erratic weaving of a young teenager while they had their blackberry balanced on the wheel and where texting while driving? That was just yesterday to go about 5 miles from the house. Where are people’s heads on this? Do we have to legislate common sense?
I saw Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in 3-D yesterday with Peter and Caroline. It was good silly fun. About halfway through I figured out that I hadn’t seen all of the second film but it didn’t really matter. Ariel was off to the Van Warped Tour and had a great time according to Peter. Caroline had a play date with her friend down the block, had lunch out with her parents, saw a movie, and got to spend some quality time with her daddy.
Yesterday evening I went to see a good friend’s belly dancing recital. She did a great job with her first solo. I had to leave right the end because it was after 11 when it finished up and I wanted to get home before I felt too sleepy to drive. I had a lot of fun watching her and her classmates show what they had learned over the year.
This morning I put out the sprinkler for the first time this year. I am only watering the parts of the lawn that get too much sun and look rather withered right now. The back yard gets enough shade that I don’t have to worry about it. The part I am watering use to have a tree that we had to take out because the truck was rotten so that area now has constant sun. I also have only to 10 AM to do it. We had rumors of rain all weekend but so far all we have had were some high clouds and lovely sunny days. It is still cool enough at night and in the morning that we turn off our AC and open the windows. Middle of the afternoon can get a little brutal but nothing like I have a feeling that August is going to be.
DragonCon is 46 days away and I am so not panicking about anything because I am not doing the art show or a costume so there is no reason for me to panic. I have no clue how many panels I will be on. I think I told everyone who needed to know that I am coming down.
Today I think I am going to buckle down and work on one of the pending projects that should be done sooner rather than later. Peter and I might go out and see a movie together since there are several out that the girls have no interest in but we want to see.
I am grateful I went to see my friend’s belly-dancing troop.
