Think Good Thoughts for Aaron Allston

Posted By on April 6, 2009

I met Aaron pretty early in my Star War years at Del Rey. He was a nice guy with a fun sense of humor. He and I ended up talking about the gaming industry both paper and electronic for quite a while and where we would see it going.

I work with Aaron on a couple of novels for the NJO (New Jedi Order). We’d e-mail back and forth getting him information and getting updates from him about where he was in the novel. He appreciated that I understood that getting checks cut in a timely fashion was a good thing and I would get the paperwork started as soon as I got the go and keep up with it until I knew the check was on its way to him. I did that for all my authors. Being married to an author, you learn how little things like that you can do in the day to make sure that they get paid is a big thing on the other side of the equation.

We did numerous panels together at conventions. It would usually be Aaron, Tim Zahn, Mike Stackpole and me doing at least one if not more either on Star Wars or on writing and editing media tie-ins. I consider Aaron a friend not at BFF but a friend that I respected as a writer and as a person.

Aaron had a heart attack while on the road promoting his most recent Star Wars book. He didn’t realize that he was having one. He just thought he was tired from the schedule of appearances he had agreed to do. So he is putting it down to too much air travel and a sour stomach. You can find more details here which is a web log that has been set up by friends and family to put all the information on Aaron in one place.

Aaron is a good person. He is getting better. He is in the ICU on the road to recovery.

From the press release that was on the Star War.com Blog

Aaron’s family has set up a blood donation sponsorship. If anyone in the Dallas area would like to donate blood, you can go to the National Blood Exchange here or Carter BloodCare here. Say that you are donating blood for Aaron Allston, patient of Carter Blood Care in Bedford, TX, and give his sponsor number: SPON 047786.

Please send any well-wishes to:

Aaron Allston
c/o Del Rey Books
1745 Broadway
New York, NY 10019

But please DO NOT send any perishable items or flowers, as Aaron will not be able to receive anything this week.

So think good thoughts for Aaron and his family. They have a tough road ahead of them.

I am grateful that I did get to work with Aaron on New Jedi Order.
